At this point what I suggest is:
What is the make and model of the computer?
How much Ram?
How much hard drive open?
What happens if you go to safe mode with networking?
The comp is HP media drive m1095c, 3.2 P4 with HT, 250gig hard drive, plenty of free space, 512 ram
The computer boots fine, so don't know what Safe Mode will do....all other progs work fine updating windows and QBook Pro updates, aol updates, etc..
You can disable the startup programs. Then restart the computer. The other thing I need you to do is go to c:\windows\prefetch
delete everything that is in there then restart also
Understand the disable all...already did that actually and as far as the windows\prefetch at the C prompt I get the reply \windows\prefetch is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file....anything else?
Winsock is an old term I cant see that having anything to do with it. IF you want to take a shot at Microsoft be my guest, they are expensive and could end up telling you to reinstall the whole os.
Click on start and control panel and administrative tools and event viewer. On the left is categories. Click system and look on the list on the right for anything that has to do with this. There will be red x or yellow ! next to big events. Correlate the date and time with the improper shutdown of the browsers. Check the internet explorer category too. Let me know what is listed that might have anything to do with this.
Wow EV should go back a lot longer than that. here is the link on winsockxpfix :
I dont believe that is your issue. With ev being shorted and all, how much disk space do you have exactly? Right click on IE7 and see if you select it to start without addons if it comes up longer.
That is small for a paging file if you only have 512 mb of ram.
The cache is in control panel, internet options, browsing history, settings , there is a line that says disk space to use and there are recommendations listed near it.
