How do I unlock my Windows System Restore I only have 6% free

Resolved Question:

How do I unlock my Windows System Restore? I only have 6% free space in it and can't use my Restore at all. My start up disks don't fix it.Pc runs very slow.I do have92% free space on my hard drive. .... PS.. How do you clean the regersty?

yes.. it says that it is locked

Try this:

 

Click Start, Run and type GPEDIT.MSC
Navigate to Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/System/System Restore
Set Turn off System Restore and Turn off Configuration to Disable
Right click on My Computer and Select Manage
Navigate to Services and Applications/Services
Navigate to System Restore Service and double click
On the General tab set [Startup Type] to Automatic using the drop down list
Click the Start button to start the service
Close the Computer Management console
Return to System Restore in Group Policy Editor and configure both to Not Configured
Close Group Policy Editor and reboot the system.

It says System Restore cannot br restored

Ok, try this:

turn off system restore, then

  • Open My computer, go to Tools >> Folder options.
  • Click on View tab, Under Advanced settings, Check Show hidden files and folders and Uncheck Hide protected operating system files, this will give a warning "You have chosen to display operating system files. Are you sure you want to display these" click Yes and click OK on folder options window.
  • If you have problem in configuring show hidden files and folders, then read this post on how to show hidden files and folders. else skip to step 4
  • Now, right click on System Volume Information folder, and select Rename and give the new name as System Volume Information2.
  • Restart your computer, check if system restore now works

    yes .. I have norton 2008 and is updated...I have Internet Security

    Try this:

     

    1. Start Norton
    2. Select Options>> Norton Anti-Virus
    3. Select Miscellaneous from the right pane
    4. Scroll down the right pane and locate "How to protect my product"
    5. Uncheck the box titled: Turn protection on for my Symantec product
    6. Click OK

    <>Run System Restore:

    1. Go to Start>> All Programs>> Accessories>> System Tools>> System Restore.
    2. Select the option: Restore my computer to an earlier time.
    3. Select a restore point to restore back to.
    4. Click OK

    The restore operation will now start. Restart Windows when completed.

    <>Turn Norton back on:

    1. Start Norton
    2. Select Options>> Norton Anti-Virus
    3. Select Miscellaneous from the right pane
    4. Scroll down the right pane and locate "How to protect my product"
    5. Check the box titled: Turn protection on for my Symantec product
    6. Click OK

    For 2008 it may look like this:

     

    1 Start your Norton product.
    2 In the lower left corner of the window, click Options > Norton Internet Security or Norton AntiVirus.
    3 In the right pane, under How to protect your product from hackers, uncheck Turn on protection for Norton products [recommended].
    4 Click Apply and then click OK.

    STEP 2
    Run Windows System Restore
    Follow the operating system instructions to run Windows System Restore.
    STEP 3
    Turn on product protection
    1 Start your Norton product.
    2 In the lower left corner of the window, click Options > Norton Internet Security or Norton AntiVirus.
    3 In the right pane, under How to protect your product from hackers, check Turn on protection for Norton products [recommended].
    4 Click Apply and then click OK.

    the box was marked but i re-marked it and it still didnt go back

    It worked...now can I defrag the drive with only 6% of free space...? and will i need to do this each time i need to go back?

    No, you really don't need to defrag at all these days, it can be done with 6%, it will just take longer...
