hi my laptops display all of a sudden became fuzzy or blurry.

Customer Question

hi my laptop's display all of a sudden became fuzzy or blurry. I have a windows XP Operating System. All applications are working except that looking at the screen hurts my eyes and the texts are hard to read.

WHat is the best fix for this problem? Thanks

Hi,

Please restart the system and repeatedly tap the F8 key (you need to press F8 before Windows starts to load).

You should see a menu.

Select Safe Mode from there and press Enter twice.

Let me know if you see the same problem in safe mode (in safe mode, the icons will be a little larger than in normal mode)

Customer: replied 4 years ago.

Hi,

I did as you had instructed and booted in safe mode. The display was not as fuzzy as if I am booted normally. Maybe the safe mode is normal because there are no white squigly fuzzy on the display at all.

Do you know how to fix my problem? Do you think I caught a virus? Thanks so much.

BEst,

Ryan

Expert:  Santonu replied 4 years ago.
While in safe mode, click Start- >Programs-> Accessories-> System Tools-> System Restore.

Click Next, select a date when your computer worked fine, click Next twice.

Wait for restore operation to complete. When it does, the computer will restart automatically

When it starts again check the display and let me know the results

Customer: replied 4 years ago.

I can't do that while logged on normaly?

Just curious

Ryan

Customer: replied 4 years ago.

Hi,

restarted and checked the box and still the display is fuzzy.

Please instruct me how to update the driver with the correct working one. Thanks

Expert:  Santonu replied 4 years ago.
Please try the following steps one at a time, test the issue after each.

1 Try the following link to download trial version of Antimalware (do not purchase anything)

http://tinyurl.com/m5p9dc

Once downloaded, Install it and scan your computer.

Select Perform full scan, click on Scan

When completed, it will give you the option to Remove Selected (if it finds any infection)

When completed, restart the computer and let me know the results.

2 Use the following link to download the latest driers for display adapter

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&ServiceTag=&SystemID=LATITUDE%20D620&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid=

Once downloaded, install it and restart the system

If the problem is still there, we will try one more step

Customer: replied 4 years ago.

Ok, i have installed the malwarebytes and is currently scanning fully my C drive. I'll keep you posted with the outcome of this before I proceed to step #2.

So far, it found 2 objects infected.

Best,
Ryan

Expert:  Santonu replied 4 years ago.
Please let me know. And if the link for driver do not open properly, please try the following alternate link

http://tinyurl.com/ylzc39

Customer: replied 4 years ago.

The scan might take a while. SHould I go ahead and try Step #2?

Ryan

Expert:  Santonu replied 4 years ago.
No please complete the scan first. It will take some time

When completed, it will give you the option to remove the detected items.

If it takes too long, please post your replies here. I will try to get back to you as early as possible

Customer: replied 4 years ago.

Ok. I'll complete the scan and then delete any infected files. THen I'll proceed w step 2.

Will keep you posted. thanks

Expert:  Santonu replied 4 years ago.
Please let me know

Thanks

Customer: replied 4 years ago.
will do. But do you feel that there is nothing wrong with the display adapter or screen at all since it was normal when I was in safe mode?
Expert:  Santonu replied 4 years ago.
In safe mode, the actual display drivers are not loaded, Windows loads a default driver instead.

So, updation of the driver can be tried once.

If that fails too, the next step will be to test the system with an external monitor.
By connecting the monitor to the VGA output and then turn on the system.

You will need to press Fn + F8 to switch to the external monitor

Customer: replied 4 years ago.

Here is a report of the infected files found from the scan. I selected all (3) and removed them. Willl reboot now.

Hi,

After rebooting, the display is still fuzzy. I will try your step 2

Customer: replied 4 years ago.

Hello,

I downloaded and installed the video driver from step 2 and still after rebooting, the display was still fuzzy.

What do you think is wrong? Hope to hear from you asap.

best,

Ryan

Customer: replied 4 years ago.

Hi,

Right now I connected the laptop to an external monitor and the display is so clear on the external monitor.

What I don't get is that why when in safe mode, the display of the laptop is clear. This tells me that the hardware (display) is not broken. It has to be something with the driver or file being infected in the laptop system config. I believe I may have downloaded a file that caused this to happen. I downloaded music of XXXXX XXXXX from Limewire and this occurred. I wish we can find a way to restore a system before this fuzzy problem happened.

Please let me know what other options we have. Thanks so much.

Ryan

Expert:  Santonu replied 4 years ago.
Sorry for the delay.

Right click on an empty area of your desktop, click Properties

Click on Settings tab

Let me know the values of the following:

Under Screen Resolution, change it to 800 x 600

A dialog box will appear, click Yes

Click Ok

Now let me know if you notice the same problem with display

Customer: replied 4 years ago.
DId that and the display on the laptop is still fuzzy. thanks
Expert:  Santonu replied 4 years ago.
Okay, click Start-> Run

Type devmgmt.msc and press Enter

In the Device Manager window, locate Display Adapter and expand

Right click on your display adapter and click Uninstall

Restart the computer

Intall the drivers from the downloaded setup files

Restart once more.

If the problem remains, let me know if there are any horizontal or vertical lines on the display

Customer: replied 4 years ago.

I did that already before but the fuzziness is still on the laptop's display.

The adapter's name isXXXXX 110M.

Best,

ryan

Expert:  Santonu replied 4 years ago.
Restart the system and press F2 to enter CMOS setup

Do you see the same problem while in CMOS setup ?

Customer: replied 4 years ago.

Yes the CmoS windows are fuzzy too.

ryan

Expert:  Santonu replied 4 years ago.
It seems like a hardware problem for two reasons:

1 You are getting a proper picture on the external monitor
2 The display in CMOS setup is fuzzy which should not happen in case of a driver problem since the drivers only loaded after starting Windows.

While in CMOS setup, if you connect an external monitor, you will get a clear picture.

Now the display section is made of two parts:

a) The display adapter on the motherboard
b) The LCD/ External monitor

The same display adapter on the motherboard drives both the LCD and external monitor

Since you are getting a clear picture on the external monitor, it indicates that the display adapter is fine and also the drivers are properly installed.

So the problem can be with LCD

You can try to update the drivers once more using the following steps

1 Download the following driver and save it in your preferred location

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&relea seid=R181148&SystemID=LATITUDE%20D620&servicetag=&os=WW1&osl=en&deviceid=5260&devlib=0&typecnt=0&vercnt=6&catid=-1&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=6&fileid=246865

Do not install it now, we will do that later.

2 Click Start-> Control Panel-> Add or Remove Programs

In the list of programs, locate NVIDiA display driver and uninstall the same.

Restart the computer.

Now install the driver which you downloaded at step 1

Restart once more and test the issue.

Customer: replied 4 years ago.

hi,

did your instructions above and still the display is fuzzy (objects and mouse has white sparks.

Best,

ryan

Expert:  Santonu replied 4 years ago.
As I mentioned earlier, I think it is a LCD problem.

However, I will opt out to see if other experts can provide a different solution.

Thanks
Customer: replied 4 years ago.

should i check the ribbon between the lcd and motherboard? Do you think playing with that might get rid of the fuzziness?

Ryan

Expert:  Santonu replied 4 years ago.
Yes, you can try to reseat the video cables once and see if it makes any change.

The following link will provide the service manual for your system

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/latd620/en/SM/index.htm

And the following section is about the LCD

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/latd620/en/SM/display.htm#wp1105347

Please let me know

Customer: replied 4 years ago.

Thanks.

Do you think that reformatting my harddrives and reintalling the OS will fix that problem?

This is realy my last option that i want to avoid if possible. What do u think?

Expert:  Santonu replied 4 years ago.
No, reinstallation of Windows is not required here.

If you noticed the same problem while connecting the external monitor, then you might want to try that.

However, you can try to change the desktop theme and LCD settings to see if it changes the fuzzyness

1 Click Start-> Run

Type sysdm.cpl and press Enter

Click Advanced tab

Click Settings under Performance

Click Adjust for best performance

Click Apply and Ok

2 Right click on an empty area of your desktop, click Properties

Click on Settings tab

Click Advanced

Click Monitor tab

Under screen refresh rate, you can increase the refresh rate a little (if the other modes are listed)

Click Apply and Ok

Customer: replied 4 years ago.

were you able to read the scanned virus report?

what do you think of those viruses?

Expert:  Santonu replied 4 years ago.
Yes I saw the report already and all the infections are removed.

Your system was infected with some spywares/adwares whhich does not create this type of problem.

Customer: replied 4 years ago.

ok thanks.

Right now i am on safe mode and the display is perfect clear. If the LCD was bad, then this safe mode should also be fuzzy and blurry right?

Customer: replied 4 years ago.

Also,

why do i always get an error message when launching Internet Explorer. The msg is

"Cannot find 'file:///C:/Program%20files/Aol%20toolbar/welcome.html". make sure the path or internet address is correct'

My set home page is www.google.com which should be where the browser take me once launched right.

ryan

Expert:  Santonu replied 4 years ago.
Sorry for the delay.

This is the only point (proper display in safe mode) for which I like to opt out to see if other experts can provide an answer..

And the other problem you mentioned, you can reset Internet Explorer using the following steps

If you are using IE 6

Type the following command in the Start -> Run box, and then press ENTER:
inetcpl.cpl
The Internet Options dialog box appears.
Click the Advanced tab
Click Restore Defaults
Restart IE

If you are using IE 7

Type the following command in the Start -> Run box, and then press ENTER:
inetcpl.cpl
The Internet Options dialog box appears.
Click the Advanced tab.
Under Reset Internet Explorer settings, click Reset. Then click Reset again.
When Internet Explorer finishes resetting the settings, click Close in the Reset Internet Explorer Settings dialog box.
Start Internet Explorer again.

You will receive an email notification when other expert joins you.

Thanks

Hello and Welcome to JustAnswer, my name is XXXXX XXXXX X would like to continue with you.

Could you please tell me was the external monitor that you connected a LCD or a CRT? If it was an LCD then i'm not sure what the issue is, but if it was a CRT, then it may be possible that your Refresh rate it set to high. CRT monitors normally give a more stable image (with less flickering) with a high refresh rate. This is not necessary with LCD monitors, and setting the refresh rate too high will degrade the image quality. Set the refresh rate to 60hz.

Thank you again for the quick reply, do you use anything thats associated with AOL, do you have the AOL toolbar?
Customer: replied 4 years ago.
yes i do. should i remove that? how do i go about doing that?
Expert:  Ryan B. replied 4 years ago.
This is a bug in the installation of the AOL Toolbar (why they at AOL can’t seem to fix it is beyond me since they are now at version 5.0 of the toolbar and the error started much earlier).

Please do the following to correct the issue:

1) Click start
2) Click Run and then in the white box in the run window type in regedit and then push ok and a registry editor window should popup.
3) Now were going to search for a registry key.
Please click the + sign next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE then click the + sign next to SOFTWARE Then click the + sign next to Microsoft then click the + sign next to Internet Explorer then click on Main now on the right hand side look at what the entry(data) is for “First Home Page” iti's probably set to the (non-existant) AOL welcome file. Just double click on "First Home Page" then change what is there to your real home page such as www.google.com or www.msn.com or www.yahoo.com anything and the problem should go away.
