I have a Toshiba satellite U305-S5097...red x over speaker and "no audio output device is installed". Also on sound, video, game controller option in device manager. No sound device found in system info. I've uninstalled and installed realtek drivers to no avail. It was working one day started crackling and has not worked since. Any suggestions?
Hello,
Thank you for contacting Just Answer.
First, in order to better assist you, what is the operating system you are running on the laptop?
How long has the laptop been without sound?
Was any software, hardware or updates installed prior to the occurance of this issue?
I'm running Vista Home Premium. Internal and external speakers stopped working approx. 2 weeks ago. I think it was 4/11. I did a system restore back to 3/31/09 which did nothing. Vista SP1 has since been installed again but no updates were installed prior to sound suddenly stopped working. I did hear a crackling noise the morning the sound stopped working. I rebooted the computer later in the day and have had no sound since. No new hardware or software has been installed.
Ok, just to rule out something with the onboard speakers, have you tried plugging external speakers or a headset into the laptop to see if you get sound?
If you do not have the speakers to try the test above, or if the test is unsuccessful, navigate to device manager and tell me if the speaker device appears to be installed or if it has a yellow sign by it:
Open Device Manager by clicking the Start button then clicking Control Panel, then click System and Maintenance, and then click Device Manager. If you are prompted for an administrator password XXXXX confirmation, type the password XXXXX provide confirmation.
I've plugged external speakers in and they will not work either. In Device Manager, there is no Sound, video, game controller device. Under control panel, Hardware and Sound, Sound, it says "no audio devices installed".
So just to confirm, you recently installed updated drivers correct?
Was there an error or did anything go wrong when installing the drivers?
You downloaded the drivers from the site below correct?
http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/modelContent.jsp?ct=SB&os=&category=&moid=1757725&rpn=PSU34U&modelFilter=U305-S5097&selCategory=3&selFamily=1073768663
Correct. I uninstalled the driver and then went to above website, downloaded and installed Realtek Audio Driver for Windows Vista (v6.0.1.5473; 01-29-2008; 17M). Scanned for hardware changes and still nothing.
Ok, then follow the instructions at the link below except select any device icons that have a yellow warning sign by them and follow the procedure to update the driver:
http://www.addictivetips.com/windows-tips/how-to-install-hardware-or-device-drivers-manually-in-windows-vista/
If there are no devices with a yellow sign by them let me know.
I rebooted the computer again in between posts. Under computer management, Device Manager, I now have Sound, Video and game controllers option with Realtek High Definintion Audio with yellow exclamation point! I have not previously had that option!
Very good! Now follow the instructions at the link above and let me know if it updates the driver and starts working.
