When we say "hard copy" we are talking about something printed, usually. A hard copy of a document would be a paper printout of the document. A hard copy of a photo would be an actual paper photograph.

In terms of "soft-copy" we are talking about an electronic version. So, a digital .JPG file of a photograph would be a soft copy; a digital Word document is a soft copy.

Basically, if you can store it on a PC, it's a soft copy, if you can copy it on a Xerox machine, it's a hard copy.
