Computer Bootup Problem

Customer Question

I have an HP Pentium II under Windows 98. Constantly get an exception error during last step of bootup however, I can boot up in safe mode. I think it is possibly video related. No problems evident when viewing device manager. Any suggestions

can you boot with your windows boot disk? sounds like you are missing a file and may need to re install windows all together. if it was a video driver it would still boot without telling you exception error, windows 98 was bad about that. and I am so pleased with XP.
Expert:  Paul replied 11 years ago.
Try running Knoppix (a 700MB download of disc-bootable Linux). If this loads fine, it isn't your video driver but Windows.

So you'd have to reinstall Windows (or switch to Linux).

Windows exception errors are usually due to corrupted configuration files. Try booting in safe mode and opening device manager and removing your video driver then restart in normal mode and see if it boots, if not, try running scandisk under safe mode, this is usually found under start>programs>accessories>system tools, if this does not help please let me know.

I had previously run scandisk in safe mode and it corrected something, I'm not sure what. I also successfully defraged the hard drive. Yet, I still had the same problem. I removed the video driver and it re-installed the next time I booted. It is the proper driver for the Compaq monitor I have.

However, I notice when looking at the display adapter, it says I have a Standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA). Some time ago I installed an ATI card, but it had been causing problems so I removed it. But it has been so long I don't remember whether I removed an original PCI card.

I have had problems with motherboards that have built-on video cards, sometimes the wrong driver is installed, check and see if you have a built-on video card. At the last resort I would suggest grabbing your windows 98 cd and booting up your computer with it and running a repair setup.

Reply to Christopher Valk's Post: How do I check for an onboard video card?
Expert:  Christopher Valk replied 11 years ago.
Very simple. On the back of your computer near the top of the case, just below where it plugs in, there should be a vertical serial connector, if this is where you used to plug your monitor in, or if there is a label explaining that it is for video or monitor, then you have a on-board video card.

Regardless of this fact, I would suggest you download the latest drivers from the video cards supplier. If this is ATI I would direct you to:

If the updating of the video driver does not work, you could always disable some of your programs from running on start-up, but this might mean editting the registry(ie: regedit).

I hope to help you through this.

Reply to Christopher Valk's Post: I do have a connector for the video on the back. I have to run an errand and will download the ATI driver to my laptop when I return. It seems I have done this before with ATI. But will try again when I return.

This is a sample picture of how to check for onboard video cards.

Reply to Christopher Valk's Post: Christopher, I had to go out of town today and will try to re-install the ATI card and download the latest driver this evening and will keep you posted. Thanks.
