Customer Question

does it make a differnce to use larger speaker cables with a surround system?

Not unless you're driving large speakers with high wattage. 16 gauge wire would be fine for a surround system of an average of 70-100 watts per channel.

While generally, the post above is not incorrect, An audiophile might beg to differ. Back when i was younger and had the money to "blow" on such things I could tell you the effects of the electrical properties of good vs. bad cable in an audio system. I have forgotten most of that now, but you should do some research. If you have spent a lot on your system and are really into getting the best quality sound and have an ear for it as well it may be wise to spend more on certain aspects of your system. If you are like me where your system is in the living room with kids running around and when they're not you hear the dish washer or clothes washer and dryer going and aren't spending a lot of time making sure your speakers are precisely placed in your environment for optimal sound then maybe sticking with average grade cable is ok. I own a Sony Drean System that puts out 750 watts. The system came with it own speaker cable wire. The guys at Best Buy told me to buy the Montser cable because it would improve the sound. However, the research I have been doing on and other website refer to the advertising as selling customers "snake-oil". So now I am confused by what to do.

Well i think its really a tough call. it can't be desputed that cables with better eletrical properties will carry a cleaner signal to your speakers. Will you hear the difference? i guess the only way to know is to go to an audio store and see if they will let you try different cables out on a test system in their store. Like i said earlier if all the acustical properties of the environment you are listening in aren't being looked at then mayber average cable is ok. It's like buying a lamborghini to run it up and down the street in front of your house. If this is your first suround sound system, i think you are going to be blown away by the sounds coming for all around and how great your movies now sound that you won't care about the cable. I have a friend that is a true audiofile. his stereo system costs around 60k his amplifier is a tube amplifier no solid state (chips) in his. his cables are thicker than my fingers. He spent alot of money to have the speakers mounted in exactly the right place in the room he would be listenening. the are mounter to the floor with special vibration limitting mounts, i could go on but the botXXXXX XXXXXne is when you here a CD palying on this system it is like nothing you have ever heard. It feels like you are right there in front of the band. Of anyone i know he would be the best to help you. i will send him and email now asking him to explain the difference in cable and what the best thing to go with would be. I am afraid though that he will be a bit of a snob about it and say something like "well with that kind of system it probably won't make a difference". but then again that may be good advice.

I already bought my surround sound system and I can hear the difference. My question is will I hear a bigger differnce by investing in better speaker cables.

i'll ask my friend. it should be an honest unbiased answer. with some technical knowledge to back it up. he is an engineer. I'll let you know.
