Please press and hold the power on / off button on the tablet, then select the Restart option and confirm, then wait a bit, and check.

Thank you. The star means you only have priority notifications enabled. Pressing a Volume button will allow you to select different notifications which make sound. Full details:

To remove the star, open Settings app icon, then select option Sounds & Notifications, then select option Interruptions. Then option When calls and notifications arrive, then select Always Interrupt. (Or something similar.)
