Hello my name is XXXXX XXXXX I would be happy to help you.
Lets collect some data
Have you had this PC connected to the wireless previously?
Have you recently installed new software?
Yes I have never had a problem connecting. I did reboot it this morning, and it was after that that I could not connect to anything.
Sorry to hear, lets do some trouble shooting shall we.
Have you already tried restarting your laptop again?
I assumed but had to ask.
lets click on start
then find my computer and right click. Select device manager
im in computer management
alright do you see the device lists?
we want to check out your device and make sure its working properly
Look at network adapters what do you see?
there are three, one of which is the currently installed modem
Name them off for me
1394 net adapter
broadcom 440x, which is the one upstairs
Dell wireless 1395, which is the old one
So you recently added a new wireless device?
a couple of weeks ago, but its been working fine with my laptop until this morning, and it is still working with all of the other laptops in the house, so I don't think its the router.
Oh I didn't suspect the router. I was speaking about the device list on the device manager
are you still on the device manager?
What we are going to do is check your driver for the laptop nic and see if the device is working correctly.
go ahead and click on your wireless adapter in device manager
does it say device is working properly?
click on driver details
What does it say
device instance id Want that string of letters and numbers?
do you have an update driver option?
You are using a different PC right now correct?
Or did you connect that laptop to the lan
No, I'm using a desktop that connects differently
Do you have a LAN cable
One that we could use to connect the laptop to the router manually?
I have no idea
CAT5 cable RJ45 connector looks like a phone cord only larger those are RJ11s
I don't think I have one, and if I do it will take forever to find it
Ok well we need one to update the driver, but thats ok we can still check a couple other things. XP for some reason drops drivers now and again. Although your device did say the Wireless card was functioning.
Click Start, Control panel network and internet connections
Lets run the wireless network setup wizard
But first click on network connections and tell me what you see.
local area connection network cable unplugged
wireless network connection not connected
1394 connection connected
so your connected to the internet
no, i don't know what that is...
Check I do, its just been a minute since I worked on XP. Its supposed to be there.
Click on your wireless connection
what do you see
mine upstairs: TheBeav2 and my neighbor's
and can you click on the one upstairs
can you connect to it?
SOLVED! why did that happen?
Its an XP thing, honestly.
It just happens from time to time, I'm surprised you have not experienced it prior.
Glad I could help.
