Marco :

Hi there,

Marco :

My name is XXXXX XXXXX I'll be assisting you with this issue.

Marco :

In order to configure the netgear you need to have your laptop directly plugged into the ethernet port.

Marco :

Then type mywifiext.net

Customer:

Have my laptop directly plugged into the ethernet port on the Netgear device or my wireless router?

Marco :

the netgear device

Customer:

it is

Customer:

the power light is green & the wlan light is red

Marco :

are you able to click start

Marco :

then in the search bar

Marco :

type cmd

Marco :

a black window will coem up

Customer:

done

Marco :

type ipconfig

Marco :

and tell me what is the ip address, subnet mask and ateway

Customer:

ip address: 2001:0:9d38:90d7:241e:2cc5:b53b:c055 gateway just says :: & i don't see the subnet mask listed

Marco :

ok that doesn't look right probably a reason why it's not working

Customer:

sorry that's the wrong info

Marco :

can you type ipconfig /all

Marco :

no problems let me know when you have the info

Customer:

IPv6= fe80::51f4:76c3:53ad:9e08%11, ipv4=192168.1.104, subnet=255.255.255.0, gateway=192.168.11

Marco :

ok

Marco :

in a web browser type http://192.168.1.1

Customer:

i need to step away for a few minutes, be right back

Marco :

and tell me if the netgear page opens up

Customer:

it asked me for a username & password

Customer:

it took me to cisco, which is for my wireless router

Customer:

i'll brb

Customer:

ok sorry about that

Customer:

hello?

Marco :

yes

Marco :

do you have your wireless on?

Customer:

yes

Marco :

ok you will need to turn off your wireless

Marco :

and just have the cable connected to the netgear

Customer:

then we can't chat

Customer:

i only have 1 ethernet port

Marco :

that's fine

Marco :

just bookmark this chat

Marco :

once you disable the wireless

Marco :

disconnect the cable to the neatgear then plug it back in

Marco :

then test using mywifiext.net

Customer:

ok, but that's what i was having issues with in the first place. i'll try again. brb

Marco :

yes but just make sure the wireless is turned off

Marco :

then if you need to type ipconfig /all

Marco :

and check what the gateway ip address

Customer:

ok

Marco :

then use that to http://

Customer:

ok brb

Marco :

ok

Customer:

it does not read the netgear device. it tells me nothing is connected

Customer:

i still have a red wlan light & no lan light

Marco :

what cable are you using between the router and your laptop?

Customer:

the netgear device uses a USB for power & an ethernet cable. my router is wireless

Marco :

what about the netgear and your laptop

Marco :

what cable are you using?

Marco :

the led lights on your ethernet ports should flash

Customer:

there are no lights on the ethernet port on my laptop. do you mean the lights on my router? the netgear device is connected to my laptop, not the router. do i need to be where i can see my router?

Marco :

yes your laptop ethernet port. should light up because you have it connected to the netgear

Marco :

the netgear has an ethernet port. Do not worry about the router for now

Marco :

you need your laptop to talk to the netgear

Customer:

my laptop has no lights on the ethernet port, whether it's supposed to or not idk, but i don't remember it ever lighting up before

Marco :

what about on the netgear

Marco :

near the ethernet port

Marco :

it should also light up

Customer:

no, the netgear device just has 3 lights on the top of it: power, wlan, & lan. power is green, wlan is red, & lan is dark

Marco :

the lan should come on when it's connected to the ethernet port

Customer:

i know the lights you are talking about; it glows through the plastic where the cable connects to the port, right?

Marco :

yes

Customer:

but it's not

Marco :

ok disconnect the cable from the netgear port

Marco :

and connect it to a port on the router

Marco :

and then check whether the light goes on the router

Customer:

ok give me a minute to move to the router

Marco :

ok

Customer:

unplug ethernet from netgear & plug into router so computer is connected to router, or so netgear is connected to router?

Marco :

the computer connect to the router

Customer:

ok

Marco :

we want to test to make sure the cable and the computer ethernet port are working

Customer:

done

Customer:

green light on ethernet port on router

Customer:

still no light on laptop

Customer:

sorry, there is a light on laptop as well

Customer:

orange

Marco :

ok

Marco :

now plug the laptop into the netgear and see if the same light on the laptop goes on

Customer:

no light

Marco :

turn of the netgear and turn it back on

Customer:

done, but it takes a min to fully power up

Customer:

oooh green wlan!

Customer:

should i try web address for setup again?

Marco :

what about lan?

Customer:

nothing

Marco :

strnage

Marco :

strange what about the orange light on your laptop?

Customer:

no light on laptop

Customer:

well, lan just blinked once

Customer:

and again

Marco :

ok that's better

Marco :

now try to configure it but you will need to disable your wireless

Marco :

otherwise it will try to connect to the router

Customer:

lan is not on, it only blinked twice. still try?

Customer:

ok it's on now. going to try. brb

Marco :

let me know when you're back

Customer:

i'm back; it didn't work.......

Marco :

what was the IP address that you received?

Customer:

the first time i tried i had a green wlan.....took a long time to get green lan. finally came on, but laptop did not recognize connection. unplugged netgear, plugged back in, & tried again. now have red wlan light again

Customer:

is my netgear device bad? i have had trouble with it since i bought it

Marco :

because you need the LAN light to be on in order to configure it

Customer:

side note; wlan is red, lan is occasionally blinking green now

Marco :

if it's blinking green then you should be able to connect to it

Marco :

if you type ipconfig /all

Marco :

what is the IP address of the Ethernet Port (not wireless)

Customer:

it's not constantly blinking, just occasionally

Customer:

it only gave me a physical address

Marco :

no IP address

Customer:

not when i was connected to netgear. do you want me to do a new one connected to the router?

Marco :

no

Marco :

let me check something

Marco :

you may need to configure your laptop with a static ip address

Customer:

it doesn't read the netgear connection at all; like it's not even plugged in

Customer:

ok

Marco :

ok configure your ethernet port on your laptop

Marco :

with ip address 192.168.1.10

Customer:

how?

Marco :

click start

Marco :

control panel

Marco :

then network and internet

Marco :

view network status and tasks

Marco :

then on the left change adapter settings

Marco :

right click on Local Area Connection and select properties

Customer:

then configure?

Marco :

yes

Marco :

and go to IPv4

Customer:

i don't see that

Customer:

i have 5 tabs:

Customer:

general, advanced, about, driver, details, power management (ok, 6 tabs)

Marco :

ok go back

Marco :

press cancel

Customer:

ok

Marco :

then right click on the Local Area connection again and select properties

Customer:

done

Marco :

on the list do you see IPv4?

Marco :

select that then click properties

Customer:

yes

Customer:

want me to click properties for it?

Customer:

found it

Marco :

yes

Marco :

please click properties

Customer:

ok did it & added ip address you gave me

Marco :

ok

Marco :

now make sure the cable is plugged into the netgear

Customer:

it is

Marco :

and disable the wireless

Marco :

and in the black window

Marco :

type ping 192.168.1.254

Customer:

ok brb

Customer:

"Pinging 192.168.1.254 with 32 bytes of data:

Customer:

Reply from 192.168.1.107: Destination host was unreachable (x4)

Marco :

192.168.1.107?

Marco :

what is that?

Customer:

Ping statistics for 192168.1.254: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, lost, 0%

Customer:

that's what it came up with

Marco :

oh ok that's a good sign

Marco :

use the browser to type http://192.168.1.254

Marco :

and you should have access to the netgear page

Customer:

webpage not available

Customer:

but i have a red wlan light again; want me to restart netgear?

Marco :

did you disconnect the wireless?

Marco :

on your laptop?

Customer:

no lol ok brb

Marco :

ok

Marco :

just have to remember you can have both connected at the same time

Customer:

sorry i took so long. here's the deal:

Customer:

my computer is not recognizing that the netgear is even connected to it

Customer:

i ran the troubleshooter & it said there was nothing plugged in to the ethernet port

Marco :

do you have another computer? to test with?

Customer:

yes. give me a min to take it from my husband

Marco :

ok

Customer:

will reconnect on the other computer; closing this window

Customer:

ok i haven't tried yet. wanted to make sure i could find you first

Customer:

going to try now...bbs

Customer:

the netgear is not getting a lan signal

Customer:

i assume that's why the laptops don't read a connection

Marco :

strange

Marco :

must be a problem with the unit then

Customer:

yes, i agree

Marco :

the last test is to reset the netgear

Marco :

do you see a small pin hole size

Marco :

at the bottom left hand corner

Customer:

yes, i know where it is

Marco :
Use a pin or paperclip to press the Reset button and hold it for 5 seconds until the power LED blinks amber.
Customer:

while is is USB connected, i assume?

Marco :

yes

Customer:

ok

Customer:

ok it's powering back up

Customer:

ok power is on. will disconnect wireless to retry

Marco :

ok

Customer:

now i'm only getting a power signal. it's the device

Marco :

ok it must be the device then

Marco :

faulty and just need to return it

Customer:

yeah. thanks for helping me!

Marco :

no problems

Marco :

if you can take a minute to rate my services that will be great

Marco :

bonuses much appreciated and all the best
