Hello & Welcome to JustAnswer – My name isXXXXX and I will be assisting you with your question today.
When you are ready to continue, please write me a short message to begin.
Hi Kamil. I am having trouble getting my wifi extender to pick up my network.
No problem - i'll help you set it up.
Do you know the network key for your wireless router?
The main one.. ?
I am sorry I do not know what that means. Doesn't that frighten you?
Consider, we don't have the extender - How would you connect to the internet?
I am assuming there is already a wifi device available.
I do not understand. I have Cox Cable and I use a Cisco Wireless Router.
Can you tell me if you know the password XXXXX network key for Cisco Wireless Router?
I know the network name and password.
Is there any other computer or system available with which we can configure the extender while i speak to you on this system?
I have an IPAD, will that work?
Give me just a second and I will go to another room to get it. Thanks
Take your time.
ok I am ready
Can the extender to a power outlet
it is plugged in
Can you see the Reset button?
Please get a paper clip or pin and put that in the reset hole for 10 seconds and keep it held for 10 seconds.
The power led will begin to flash when the reset is complete.
The power button is now orange instead of green.
Is it now released?
Now it is green.
From your iPad can you look up the available wireless networks - It should have one called netgear_ext
I have never had to do that on my ipad. Where do I find that? Under settings and then..
In Settings -> Wi-Fi
Never mind - just found it.
It should say Choose a Network.. and will show you a list
I have connected under NetGear.
Now open safari on iPad
Now have the Genie!!
Click on Setup Wizard
My choices are Jackie's network and manually input my wireless network.
It will show you your current wifi (cisco one)
I think yours is Jackies Network
Jackie's Network should be the Cisco one
Select Jackies Network and click Continue
Enter the password XXXXX Jackie's Network
It says to enter the passphrase. Is that the password?
It's the network password XXXXX the Cisco Router (which you use to connect)
Now I have entered the password XXXXX now on "key 1" and asking for me fill in that box.
Which password XXXXX you enter?
Did you enter the password XXXXX Cisco Router?
What does it says on top
sorry I lost the page and am now connecting to the Genie again. Now I have re entered and pressed generate.
I think you are in the wrong settings
Now it says to select the name of your 5GHz band. I have three choices.
I'll tell you what to do step by step
select all three and click continue
It will only let me select one.
How do I know if my router supports 5GHz band?
and click continue
note the name.
I can choose that my router does not support 5GHz or set it up later ormanually input in my wireless SSID
Tell me all three options
It should also say 2.4Ghz
My choices are My router does not support 5GHz band. OR Set it up later.OR Manually input my wireless SSID.
Start over again, open safari and type 192.168.1.250 and press the arrow sign in the bar to open this page
Tell me if it asks for a username and password
Where am am I typing this?
From where you type the websites
I have put the number in the box but I have no arrow sign.
Press the return key on ipad it should open this page
It is trying to connect.
I am in Safari.
What is asking or showing?
Is it showing you the genie page again?
It will not connect. safari could not open the page because the server stopped responding.
It will not connect. Safari could not openthe page because the server stopped responding.
Type mywifiext.net and press return key again
I cannot connect with you at all.
Can you reset the netgear extender again by putting pin in and wait till all light flashes
Now I can see your response.
You need to scroll down if you miss my response because window skips it.
Once it reset, go to settings -> wi-fi on iPad and click on netgear_ext again
I have reset the extender. mynetwifiext.net cannot be found.
I am there and have the genie again.
Ok I'll post a picture now so you can confirm that you see the same page as me
Is this what you see?
yes and I have two choices.
On the top left, which tab is purple?
extender to router
Under SSID I can choose Jackie's or Manually input my wireless SSID
Wait wait please
Can you see three options on top right
Skip | Refresh | Continue
I would be happy to. glad you have patience. Yes. Skip Refesh Continue
Now select Jackies one and click Continue
First select Jackie then Click Continue
I am there
What does it says in bold and black
I have and a request for the passphrase for WEP and then a purple box that says generate.
Wait - Let me see
Is it like
Name: Security:Passphrase: ?
I cannot hit purple box at the bottom without choosing generate to fill in the Key 1 - 4
then two options back and continue
Yes it has all of those things. You want me to press the purple button at the bottom that says back
You select WEP
Did it not give option to chose WPA or WPA2
The name Jackie's is filled in and WEP is already filled in. I just need to put in the passphrase. No option of WPA or WPA 2. That would have been too simple because it would have connected automatically.
enter a passphrase, and click Generate to create the keys
The passphrase is same as the password/network key of Cisco Wireless Router
I have done that. Now continue?
Did it show you any keys?
You have to make a note of them
I have done that.
Ok - On the next screen it may ask you to select the default key, so make a note of default key as well
do I press continue?
Now I have three choices 1. My router des not support 5GHz. 2. Set it up later. 3.Manually input my wireless SSID.
How do I know if my router supports that? will it say on the router somewhere?
I can check it
What is the model / part number of the router?
It should be something like linksys wrt 1000 etc?
It support 5ghz
So what do I choose? Set it up later or manually input my wireless?
Chose Manually Input My Wireless SSID
Tell me what it says next
Name SSID then Security Select. When I put in the SSID Jackie's Network and hit select I have five choices - select, none, WEP, WPA-PSK[TKIP], or WPA2-PSK [AES]
In SSID type Jackie's Network1
It says Security Options (WPA-PSK) then passphrase.
Enter the password XXXXX which is the same as Cisco router password
In Name I should change it to Jackie's Network1?
Other if both networks have same name, how will we know which one is working?
Gotcha! Really you are very patient.
Now do I choose continue?
It says I should re enter the passphrase. I am sure what I entered is correct.
I have. Now still says that I need to re enter. It says to check the LED lights on the extender. The top light and the fourth from the top are lit up. I also says that if I have access control enabled on the router, to make sure I have added below MAC address into your router's Access ControlList (ACL)
Let me see
I then have three purple boxes. Cancel, Continue, and Skip
It's not connecting because of the settings on the Cisco Roter
So now what do I do?
Who setup the Cisco Router?
Can you click on the wireless signals shown on this computer, right click on the connected network select properties
It should have a field for Encryption Type
Please tell me what is written in there
Sorry I am having to reenter on the Genie again. My ipad cut me off.
Do you get this type of screen on the genie?
I have right clicked. but do not see the screen you have sent me.
No - We are back to Genie.
Ignore my last message. Can you see an option on Genie which says Wireless Settings?
I am on the page that says select the name of your 5GHz wifi network.
Is it showing Jackie's Network there?
I can select Jackie's or manually enter.
then click Continue and tell me all options you see after that
click Continue and tell me all options you see after that
Enter the security settings of the selected Wifi network. It says my existing network in 2.4 ghz: Name(SSID) Jackie's Network, Security:WEP, Encryption Strength: I have choices 64bit or 128 bit. Then it asks for my Security Encryption(WEP) Key and the passphrase
I then can choose the purple button generate and it will give me the same key settings 1-4
I can choose back or continue after the key settings are generated.
The problem is that the Cisco router is set to work with WEP
It should not have been like this
So how do I fix this?
To fix this we need to login to Cisco Router and change it WPA or a different security setting and then give it a password.
Then it will be changed everywhere and after that we should connect netgear extender to cisco.
Ok, step by step. And if my connection to you gets cut off. How do I get you back?
That's the main problem, if connection is cut-off and you dont get back then you end up with out internet.
The router will disconnect once we update the security settings and if anything is done wrong then you wont be able to re-connect.
No, I mean if I accidentally leave this website. Will you call me?
We can try one thing where chances are that it will re-connect by itself.
I am not allowed to call. I am only allowed to work through this system.
ok, so if I go back through just answer can we reconnect?
Yes, we can connect when you login to JustAnswer.com and select My Quesions from the top menu
Then click on this question and it will let you connect to me.
On this computer, can you type 192.168.1.1
Sorry I am not an expert or anywhere near it!
On this Computer open Internet Explorer
In the browser's address field and hit Enter
so do I open another box at the top of the page?
If it asks for a username and password XXXXX you open 192.168.1.1 on this computer enter admin in username and admin password
It says it is waiting.
ok I am there.
I am in set up.
Is there any tab there that says Wireless Setup
I am looking
It should have two options on top
Manual and Wi-Fi Protected Setup
Which option is selected?
Click Wireless Security
Next to Basic Wireless Settngs
Which Security Mode is selected?
Click on it and select WPA / WPA2
In the password XXXXX enter the password
You may need to reconnect this computer to wireless again using this password (which you will type there)
WPA2/WPA mixed or WPA2/WPA mixed enterprise mode?
Enter a password XXXXX click save.
After you click Save, You may need to reconnect this computer to wireless again using this password (which you will type there)
It has been saved and taken me back to the same screen.
Now reset netgear again, using a pin
Go to Ipad settings -> Wi-fi select Netgear_ext
Open Safari and when you are back to genie page, let me know
My ipad lost the wifi. So it asked for the security settings. My choices are None, WEP, WPA, WPA2,WPA Enterprise, WPA2 Enterprise
It should not ask for anything when you connect to Netgear_EXT
I do not have wifi on my ipad any longer. It disconnected along with my wireless printer. It all has to be reconnected.
Did you reset netgear?
On IPad Settings -> Wi-fi
does it show Netgear_EXT as wireless network?
I am now reset on the ipad
What do you mean?
Now back one netgear genie. Choose Jackie's Network?
It should now simply ask for a passphrase
which is the one you setup on cisco
Enter that and click continue
Now back to my choices of my router does not support 5ghz, set it up later, manually input my wireless SSID
Do I choose manual?
Did it not give any option to chose 2.4 G?
I can choose My router does not support 5ghz band
Ok chose this one
Tell me what it shows next
It gives me the 2.4GHz network name and the 5GHz Network name and now it has cut me off again. I am going back through the prompts. Just a second.....
Good seems like we are on the right page now
When you get back on this page There should be an option to check at the bottomUse the same security mode and password XXXXX those for the existing network.
yes, couldn't type that as fast as you
This box should be checked/selected
Then click Continue
Now waiting to connect.
It is applying the settings.
We are progressing.
There should be another check box at the bottom
On the next page
My wireless devices are connected to the Extender Network (Selecting this checkbox activates the Contunue button)
Select this checkbox too and click Continue
My wireless devices are connected to the Extender network?
Yes select this box and click continue
Now have error opening the page. Hotspot login cannot openthe page because the server cannot be found.
It should be configured at this point.
Click Settings -> Wi-Fi
tell me what the names of wireless network can you see
I can see Jackie's, then Jackie's 2Gext and 5GEXT
Extender is now connected.
You have now the extended networks showing is Jackie's 2 and 5
You can connect to any of those two
Tap on Jackie's 2 and enter the password XXXXX setup
It will be connected then
Does that mean I can take this upstairs and see if it will boost the signal to the Smart TV? This is the entire reason I bought this.
This should be placed in the center somewhere
How do I know if it is working? Maybe a dumb question.
So it can pick signals from Cisco and transfer upstairs
connect to jackies 2 on ipad
then try to use internet and see if internet works
Ok I will be right back
First test it here
Connect iPad to Jackie's 2 wireless network and try to use safari to go to google.com or some other internet webste
If that opens then extender is connected.
It opened. Wow When would I use the 5GHZ?
You can use any of the two
On the smart tv with Netflix, would it make any difference?
It should give higher speed
Clearly I am dangerous with technology.
Use the 5ghz one with smart' tv.
You will need to re-connect your TV to this new Wifi
Place the extender somewhere in the middle
Would you mind if I do that now?
You can do it ill wait here
I am going to unplug the extender now but the middle light is not on. Is that a problem? The Link rate 5 GHZ light.
I am moving it upstairs where I need it extend the signal.
That means you need to use the 2. GHz one
It should not make much difference, try connecting smart-tv to 2ghz
Is that because my router does not support that?
I will be right back
It's because rotuer is setup to work on 2 ghz
I am setting up the network on the tv. Do I choose WPA-PSK(TKIP) OR WPA-PSK(AES) or the same except WPA2 with same letters following?
These settings were shown while configuring the netgear but i guess we have not made a note of it
so you can first try WPA2 and if that doesnt work then the other two
So WPA2-PSK(TKIP) or PSK(AES)
Thank you I will be right back.
I plugged the router in upstairs. All lights lit but the middle one. I have put in the password XXXXX now asking for ip address.
What is asking for the IP Address?
The TV. I have not seen this before.
There are 5 lights, which light is not lit?
The tv can see the two networks. The middle light for the 5 ghz.
It's because 5Ghz is not setup on the router.
So we need to use 2.5 Ghz one
It may be asking for the IP because you might have selected manual instead of automatic?
I have chosen the 2.5 ghz but still asking for ip. I will be right back and check on automatic. That is what I thought I chose.
It should be same as you connected before, it has got nothing to do with extender. It should just connect.
It is still asking for an IP address and a DNS. And it does see the 2ghz network.
is it like this this?
I am using an LG tv. if that makes any difference.
It's not asking you to set up ip address, its only showing that as an option
You have to select the wifi and then just hit the ok/enter key to confirm your selection
See the window above, it has an option to proceed without entering IP Address or anything.
I have selected the network and asks for the password XXXXX still goes to that screen.
Let me go look and make sure but I am sure I am looking at the screen correctly
I am not much experienced with TVs but i can try and assist.
Have a look at this video.
I have tried the automatic and the password. It says I can enter this PIN on the routers webpage. 84312419
There is something wrong
Not with the extender neither the router but the TV
The extender can connect to iPad so it is fine and we are sure, it is.
Did you look at the youtube video?
I am looking now.
Let me know. I'll be waiting
clearly. I have watched the video and does not look like my screen but I have done what the video said. Well the extender works now. On my iphone, I will just need to go to settings and enter my security code for the extended network only if I want to use it rather the the Jackie's network without the extender.
Is your screen different to the screen shown in youtube?
What is the model number for the TV?
I suppose I should know that. Let me go look at the manual.
I went through a different settings menu on the tv and wow it works. I cannot thank you enough for having enough patience to get me straightened out. Thank you.
I am glad it worked and happy that we (you and me finally did it) - It's 5.25 here now in UK. I must sleep
