I installed a Network printer on my Server 2008 R2 via "Add printer" The printer is on a workstation that is password XXXXX Before I could add the printer I had to insert the network user name and password, and checked "Save my credentials" The printer installed fine and worked perfectly. The problem I have is that when I logged out of the server and logged in again later the printer info stated that it needed attention and had a ? on it. When I click the printer it says printer not available error 0x00000005. It seems that it is not saving the user/password XXXXX as I have no problem removing it and reinstalling it with the same process

Steve Herrod :

Hi, I'll be happy to help with this issue

Steve Herrod :

can you let me know the make/model of the printer concerned

Steve Herrod :

also, what version of Windows is running on the workstation - is that Windows 7?

Steve Herrod :

Let me know and I'll be able to advise further

Customer:

Hi Steve,

Customer:

The printer is a HP LaserJet 1160 and on the workstation I am running Win 7 Ultimate

Steve Herrod :

Thanks - are both machines in a workgroup or part of a domain?

Customer:

The Win 7 and the Server are both on workgroup, Win 7 set on Home and Server on Private. Under network settings the Win 7 shows HomeGroup joined but I don't see HomeGroup on the server??

Steve Herrod :

that's ok - the Homegroup option wouldn't be part of the server install

Steve Herrod :

but that said the credentials should be stored on the server once installed

Steve Herrod :

once it's installed and working

Customer:

What do you mean by the credentials??

Steve Herrod :

can you try running this command on the server?

Steve Herrod :

net use \\server\printer password XXXXX:domain\userid

Steve Herrod :

the username/password

Steve Herrod :

If you use this command

Steve Herrod :

net use \\server\printer password XXXXX:domain\userid

Steve Herrod :

that will allow you to provide the username/password XXXXX to access the printer again

Steve Herrod :

am trying to work out why it isn't saving the user/password XXXXX though

Steve Herrod :

so in this instance the command would be

Steve Herrod :

net use \\workstation\printer password XXXXX:workstationname\userid

Steve Herrod :

Let me know if that allows you to print again without having to reinstall the printer on the Server 2008 machine

Steve Herrod :

and then we can work from there

Steve Herrod :

Cheers

Customer:

Hi Steve, I tried, no joy. Is it like this : net use \\windows7\windows7 password XXXXX:windows7\server where windows7 is the workstation where the printer is and windows7 password XXXXX password XXXXX the workstation

Steve Herrod :

it should be net use \\windows7workstation\printername windows7password XXXXX:windows7workstation\administrator

Customer:

Hi Steve, let us try this; Workstation = MIKEWORK, workstation password XXXXX Should it look like this: net use \\MIKEWORK\123456 /user:MIKEWORK\Administrator

Customer:

Will check back tomorrow, cheers

Steve Herrod :

no problem

Steve Herrod :

with those details, the command should be net use \\mikework\printername 123456 /user:mikework\administrator

Steve Herrod :

the printername will be however the printer appears when viewing network shares

Steve Herrod :

so if you go to Start-->Run on the Server

Steve Herrod :

and type \\mikework

Steve Herrod :

let me know the printer name listed there

Steve Herrod :

we can catch up tomorrow

Steve Herrod :

I'm based in UK
