Convert 2247-62-10na To A 2247-62-100t

Customer Question

How do I convert a Netopia 2247-62-10NA into a Netopia 2247-62-100T?

Submitted: 1 year ago.
Category: Networking
Expert:  computer_genius replied 1 year ago.

computer_genius :

hello and how are you today.

computer_genius :

I would like to help you with this question..

computer_genius :

you should be able to upgrade your firmware without any issues..

computer_genius :

Follow the instructions outlined below to upgrade your Netopia wireless router to the latest

firmware.

1. Ensure your Netopia 2247 router is powered on. The Power, DSL and Wireless lights should all be

illuminated.

2. Open your Internet browser and type

http://192.168.1.254 into the address bar. Press Enter on your

keyboard.

3. The router configuration home page will appear, check the

Software Version in the "Router

Information" section shown in the middle of the page.

computer_genius :

4. From the left-hand menu click

Expert Mode. On the warning page click "Yes, enter expert mode"

button.

computer_genius :

5. From the left-hand menu click

Update Router. Click Browse... to then locate the firmware file (i.e.

xxxxx.bin) you downloaded extracted earlier to your computer's hard-drive.

6. When you are ready click the

Update Software from PC button.

7. An animated blue bar will indicate the progress of the software installation.

computer_genius :

8. Once the firmware software has been installed, follow the on screen prompts to

Restart the router.

computer_genius :

9. Once the router has restarted successfully the configuration home page will reload. Check the

Software

Version

in the "Router Information" section; it should now display 2247-62-100T

computer_genius :

Your Netopia router is now running the 2247-62-100T firmware.

computer_genius :

please let me know if this helps!

computer_genius :

its pretty straight forward..

computer_genius :

if you have further questions please let me know!

computer_genius :

if your happy with my answer please don't forget to rate me!

Customer :

I already tried that. Didn't work

computer_genius :

what happened?

computer_genius :

what messages did you see?

computer_genius :

then I can tell you what to do..

computer_genius :

are you getting an invalid file error?

computer_genius :

just let me know

computer_genius :

I will stand by..

Customer :

no

computer_genius :

ok

Customer :

no error comes up

Customer :

it reboots the modem, then when I refresh the page, it looks exactly the same as it did before

computer_genius :

ok

Customer :

as if there were no change

computer_genius :

Is the modem still useable?

computer_genius :

This from time to time happens..

computer_genius :

where the flash on the modem cannot be written to due to a bug

Customer :

the modem is still useable

computer_genius :

ok that's good news

computer_genius :

at least it isn't a flash failure..

computer_genius :

the only way to get around this is to completely reset the modem back to its default settings and try the upgrade again..

computer_genius :

the problem with this is that it will have to be reconfigured\provisioned

computer_genius :

do you have ATT?

Customer :

MegaPath/Covad

computer_genius :

ok..

computer_genius :

so its the dsl version?

Customer :

yes

computer_genius :

you can try the rest option but you will still need covad\megapath to reprovision your router

computer_genius :

reset*

computer_genius :

that's the only other option at this point.

computer_genius :

I would suggest returning the modem back to them and request a new one

computer_genius :

they are usually pretty good about that

Customer :

this is not one of their modems

computer_genius :

and will send you the new one before you need to return the current one..

computer_genius :

ok..

Customer :

I purchased this one on my own

computer_genius :

this is an older model so I am don't think its has a warranty

computer_genius :

you can try the reset option

computer_genius :

upgrade the firmware, and then call them to have it reprovisioned

Customer :

reset as in pushing in the reset button for like 10 seconds, restoring it to factory default?

computer_genius :

restoring to factory default is what needs to be done

computer_genius :

and then it will load the "half" firmware version

computer_genius :

and then you upgrade to the firmware you want..

computer_genius :

and then have it reprovisioned

computer_genius :

you could call Netopia give them the model #v and see if you can RMA it as well..

computer_genius :

but like I said I think its out of warranty

computer_genius :

is there a reason why you need to upgrade it?

computer_genius :

or issue?

computer_genius :

I know its a pain in the neck..

computer_genius :

I have had others with the same issue

Customer :

well,

computer_genius :

about 90% of the time resetting to factory defaults worked.

Customer :

I work for a company and we have a bunch of these 2247-62-10NA's

Customer :

we provide a lot of circuits for customers all over the place

computer_genius :

ok.

computer_genius :

they seem stable except when it comes to flashing them

Customer :

We found that the 100T's work with their equipment for their end users to connect via vpn

computer_genius :

I have seen various issues

computer_genius :

including flash failures.

Customer :

so we're trying to flash the firmware of the 10NA to the 100T

computer_genius :

so if they don't need to be flashed, I would advise against it.

Customer :

a few weeks ago, I bought a 100T on ebay, but it was originally a 10NA

Customer :

someone just flashed it and put a small sticker over the 10NA part with a sticker that said 100T

computer_genius :

ah ha.

computer_genius :

did you check t he firmware version to be sure?

Customer :

So, knowing that it can be done, I've been looking for a solution

computer_genius :

I know it can be done..

Customer :

yes

Customer :

I checked that

computer_genius :

but like I said I have seen issues

computer_genius :

(nice job checking :) )

Customer :

even as soon as you login to the management, the gui is setup differently

computer_genius :

ebay purchases can be kinda shaky sometimes!

computer_genius :

right..

computer_genius :

it is a bit different..

computer_genius :

well I will leave the factory default reset up to you..

Customer :

I tried that

computer_genius :

its the only option you have at this point..

computer_genius :

that I am aware of..

Customer :

still nothing

Customer :

could be that the firmware that I downloaded is the one for the 10NA

computer_genius :

that's possible..

computer_genius :

you are flashing it with the same version..

computer_genius :

I assumed you had the newer one..

computer_genius :

so I didn't ask that..

Customer :

Well, I got the firmware from a MegaPath technician

computer_genius :

whats the file name?

computer_genius :

you check the Netopia wesite

computer_genius :

they are all there

Customer :

nwta784r7

computer_genius :

I believe that's it//

Customer :

I tried to find the firmware online, but all I found was something on Motorola's website that says that the carrier has the firmware

computer_genius :

check t he covad megapath site

computer_genius :

here

computer_genius :

or search here

Customer :

hold on a sec

computer_genius :

ok

Customer :

MegaPath said that they no longer support this model

computer_genius :

did you see the links I sent

Customer :

and looking through the other link you sent me, it doesn't have a download for the 100T firmware

computer_genius :

did you look at the second link

Customer :

yeah, it just has me search for the same product which takes me to the same page as the first link

computer_genius :

did you clikc "firmware updates"

computer_genius :

next to your model?

Customer :

The model that I want it to emulate is not listed there.

Customer :

I'm not sure that you fully understand what I'm trying to accomplish here.

computer_genius :

yes I am..

computer_genius :

but because its so old..

computer_genius :

that's the problem..

computer_genius :

I know what your trying to do..

computer_genius :

many have done it..

Customer :

I realize that, otherwise I would've found the answer to this issue somewhere on google

computer_genius :

understood..

computer_genius :

did you try to reset it?

computer_genius :

to factory default?

Customer :

yes.

Customer :

I tried that a while ago

computer_genius :

I don't get much for helping you, but I do look for a good rating..

computer_genius :

I am not even sure what you have paid..

computer_genius :

I don't get privileged to that :(

computer_genius :

only justanswer does..

computer_genius :

we only get pennies compared to them!

computer_genius :

but I do ttry my best..

Customer :

well, apparently "OK service" or higher is when you get paid

computer_genius :

correct

Customer :

I'm sorry for taking up your time, but I don't feel like I should pay when I didn't get an answer to my question

computer_genius :

and its only a few dollars

computer_genius :

not even half of what you paid!

computer_genius :

which kinda stinks

computer_genius :

but hey

Customer :

sorry.

computer_genius :

did you really factory reset it?

computer_genius :

or just "Reset it"

computer_genius :

must be factory reset.

Customer :

I'm pretty sure I really factory reset it

computer_genius :

was the config wiped?

computer_genius :

if it was then you factory reset it..

computer_genius :

if it wasn't then you only "reset" it..

Customer :

yes, the config was wiped

computer_genius :

ok..

computer_genius :

:(

computer_genius :

dam..

Customer :

I had wireless disabled before the reset, but it was on after I reset it

computer_genius :

ok..

computer_genius :

you did factory reset it..

computer_genius :

I will look for that firmware

computer_genius :

and if I find it I will post the link

Customer :

alright

computer_genius :

we can still post and talk even if you rate me..

computer_genius :

for as long as you want..

computer_genius :

no problem..

computer_genius :

ill keep you posted for sure.

computer_genius :

I am going to ask a friend of mine as well

Customer :

I will post my rating if I get a solution to this problem

computer_genius :

he deals a lot with these devices

computer_genius :

ok.. cool.

computer_genius :

I would rather no rating then a bad one!

computer_genius :

thanks again..

computer_genius :

I appreciate that

computer_genius :

thanks again..

Customer :

no problem

computer_genius :

Ill keep ya posted

Customer :

ok

Customer :

one more thing

Customer :

I just tried to install the firmware through cli, and it said that the firmware load failed: unknown error

computer_genius :

sound slike a bad file

computer_genius :

is that the original copy?

computer_genius :

and are you using the tftp server on the modem?

Customer :

it is the file I got from MegaPath

Customer :

I gave it my laptop's ip for the tftp server

computer_genius :

maybe its corrupt?

computer_genius :

what are the setting son your tftp server?

Customer :

settings on my tftp server?

computer_genius :

what tftp server are you using?

Customer :

I'm just using my laptop

computer_genius :

making sure its sending the file in binary format

computer_genius :

uhh ok..

computer_genius :

but whats the vendor of the tftp server?

Customer :

not sure what you mean...

Customer :

i'm not using anything specific

Customer :

that could be what i'm doing wrong

computer_genius :

it sounds like your using the modem's tftp server then..

computer_genius :

a tftp server is a trivial FTP server

computer_genius :

that means not password XXXXX XXXXX

computer_genius :

solar winds has one..

computer_genius :

you could try that.

computer_genius :

you syntax needs to be diffent when you pass the bin file to your router

computer_genius :

if using the CLI

Customer :

what should it be?

computer_genius :

off hand I am not sure..

computer_genius :

what are you typing

computer_genius :

give me your syntax

computer_genius :

I have never used the cli on your modem

Customer :

i type in install

Customer :

then it promps me

Customer :

first confirmation, so I have to type yes

Customer :

then it asks for the tftp server ip address

Customer :

192.168.1.1

Customer :

then it asks for the file path of image to install

Customer :

c:\nwta784r7

computer_genius :

you would give it your laptops IP

computer_genius :

you could try the solar winds tftp server

computer_genius :

and when it asks you file the file path

computer_genius :

give it the full filename

computer_genius :

nwta784r7.bin

computer_genius :

its a .bin right?

Customer :

yes

computer_genius :

tryt typing the full name

computer_genius :

1st

computer_genius :

before you use the solarwinds tftp server

computer_genius :

if you haven't already

Customer :

So you're saying when it asks for the file path, type in the whole file name?

Customer :

I did that, but still the unknown error

computer_genius :

ok.

computer_genius :

tryt the solar winds tftp server

computer_genius :

and get that going..

Customer :

So, once I start up the SolarWinds TFTP Server,

Customer :

I just let it run

Customer :

and try the cli install?

computer_genius :

yes

computer_genius :

put the file in the solar winds tftp dir

Customer :

tried it a couple times..

computer_genius :

home dir that is..

Customer :

didn't work

computer_genius :

and delete it from your c:\

computer_genius :

and when it asks for the file

computer_genius :

just put the full file name

computer_genius :

no path

computer_genius :

put the I[p of your laptop\pc

Customer :

ok.. so no file path

Customer :

just the full file name

Customer :

same thing.

Customer :

firmware load failed: unknown error

computer_genius :

ya

computer_genius :

sounds like a bad file

computer_genius :

why did you rate me poorly?

computer_genius :

If you wanted a refund I could have referred you back to customer service.

computer_genius :

we spent a lot of time together

computer_genius :

and I just got that firmware you needed..

computer_genius :

but I guess you can just ask for a refund..

computer_genius :

good luck in your quest!

Customer :

you just left saying that I have a bad file. You didn't mention anything about continuing to help me or to actually help me find the right firmware.

computer_genius :

This is a legacy device..

computer_genius :

The firmware isn't available to the general public.

computer_genius :

I t old you once I had it I would let you know (if you read through our chats)

computer_genius :

and you agreed.

computer_genius :

I will opt out and let another expert help you!

computer_genius :

once again good luck!

Hello and thank you for your question today. My name is Jason. I look forward to helping you today.

May I ask for you to upload that BIN file that you tried updating it with earlier?

I would like to take a look at it.

Please, be forewarned that the site is not secure:
- Click the following link: http://www.wikisend.com
- Upload the file to that website
- Once it is uploaded, the resulting page will display a "File ID" number.
- Please, give me that "File ID Number"
Customer: replied 1 year ago.

Here you go. The File ID#: 355590

Expert:  Jason replied 1 year ago.
Thank you.

I realize that the version of firmware you have on the router now has issues with VPN setup.

I cannot find one single mentioning of the firmware's availability for download anywhere on the Internet.

Netopia is keeping a lot of control over that information, which makes no sense to me.

I have run out of ideas.

For this reason, I am opting out of the question and allowing another expert the chance to help.

I wish you luck,
- Jason
Expert:  Bryan replied 1 year ago.
Welcome to JustAnswer. My name is XXXXX XXXXX I will be assisting you today. Please do not rate this session until it has been completed.

I'm going to give this a shot, but it might end up being incompatible. Because Netopia is not releasing the firmware, let's see if we can install third party firmware with VPN support. To do that I need you to look all around the outside of the Netopia for a "FCC ID". If you find it, let me know what that ID is. From there I'll be able to find out if third party firmware is available for it or not.
Customer: replied 1 year ago.

Which one? the 10NA, or the 100T?

The reason you don't see much about this firmware is because it is an older modem and no longer supported through Motorola. Motorola told me to ask the ISP for firmware because they distribute the firmware through the ISP which I uploaded for the previous expert.

Expert:  Bryan replied 1 year ago.
Ok. But it sounds like the file which you have downloaded from your isp was either designed for a different model Netopia.

Are we discussing a Netopia router or a Motorola modem? The modem (unless it's a modem with routing capabilities, in which case there would be no need for a separate router) is only used to establish a connection from your isp to your router. The router handles all of the internal networking, as well as VPN access.
Customer: replied 1 year ago.

I am well aware of what modems and routers are and what they do. The Netopia device is a modem with routing capabilities. If you read my original question, you can see what I am trying to do, but I will reiterate for you. I have a bunch of Netopia 2247-62-10NA modems. I want them to run like a Netopia 2247-62-100T modem. The network that we have setup seems to work with the 100T's, but not 10NA's, hence wanting to load the 100T firmware onto the 10NA.

Expert:  Bryan replied 1 year ago.
I apologize if I came off as condescending, it really was not meant that way.

You mentioned on dslreports.com that you have seen the modified modems listed for sale on ebay. Can you point me to one of those listings?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.

If you look at the 3rd picture, you can see the small sticker that's put on over the original sticker.

Expert:  Bryan replied 1 year ago.
Ok, got it. I'm going to do some more research and will let you know as soon as I have something for you. I'll opt out if I can't find anything so that you can receive a refund. But I do want to try to get this worked out for you.
Customer: replied 1 year ago.

I appreciate it.

Expert:  Bryan replied 1 year ago.
No problem. I hope to have something for you by the end of the day.
Customer: replied 1 year ago.

I just received an e-mail asking if I have any more questions and if I have given you a rating yet. You have not gotten back to me since Monday. I am still waiting for a response.

Expert:  Bryan replied 1 year ago.
Yeah. That's an automated message from JustAnswer. Sorry about that. I've been searching all over and have not found any concrete answers. Even the eBay sellers that I've contacted claim that they have done nothing to them, that's how they got them.

So, I can keep trying to find something, or we can try to work with the firmware that you already have (although I have a feeling it's not the correct firmware), or we can just close this question (which I know you don't really want to do because you need this done).

Just let me know how you want to proceed.
Customer: replied 1 year ago.

Either way. I've searched the web and found no solutions. All of the ebay sellers I have contacted have told me the same things. I don't see how the firmware is not the correct firmware. I got it directly from the ISP, and it is the same firmware version running on other netopia 2247's that we have in our network. I would prefer to get a solution to this issue instead of just closing out the question.

Expert:  Bryan replied 1 year ago.
Ok. Do you have any 100t's currently working as modified? If so, we might be able to export the firmware from a working 100t and import it into one of the 10na's. Or, are you saying that the nwta784r7.bin file is the same one running on a working 100t?
Customer: replied 1 year ago.

the bin file is the one I got from the ISP. Motorola told me that all firmware for this device is distributed through the ISP's. I do not have an operational 100T with me. I have one that had been modified, but I can't access it at all.

Expert:  Bryan replied 1 year ago.

hmmm ... ok. Because it seems like the firmware that you have is just the default firmware for use with a 10na. It doesn't seem like it's an "upgrade" to 100t. That would explain why you were able to write the firmware to the 10na without error, but also without any change.

Is there anyway that you can verify with the ISP that this is the correct firmware for 100T? In fact, maybe you could just ask them for the 100T firmware and not even mention the fact that you want to upgrade from 10NA. If they are compatible chips, then the 100T fw should write to the 10NA without a problem.

Then if that works, well, then you have the secret that the eBay sellers are hiding and can go into business for yourself. ;)

Customer: replied 1 year ago.

The firmware from the ISP is definitely for a 100T. I received the file again from my IT POC with the ISP. And just to make it clear, I am not going to resell these modems on ebay. I just saw that it had been done before and want to do it for use within my own network. Do you know if there is some way to wipe the NVRAM and replace it with the 100T firmware?

Expert:  Bryan replied 1 year ago.
If the firmware upgrade included with the existing firmware doesn't do it, then your next best option is to use one of the tftp (Trivial File Transfer Protocol) programs to do the transfer. There are several of them available. I've used the protocol to fix bricked routers in the past so it shouldn't have any problem with doing what you are looking for.

Let me know if you need a specific recommendation for a tftp program.
