Customer Question

When I attach the Linksys router to the modem and try to connect to the internet, I get cannot connect to internet. When I take the computer and connect it directly to the modem, I get internet.

Optional Information:
Computer OS: Windows 7
Browser: IE

Already Tried:
I called my internet provider and spoke for an hour and a half. I bought new internet and ethernet cords. I did a pcconfig with the internet provider technical support and it shows the internet is working. When I hook the modem back up to the router, it shows it is trying to access the website but I get a plain white page with the IE icon in the tool bar.

Hello and thank you for using Just Answer. My name is XXXXX XXXXX X will be happy to assist you.

I am sorry to hear you are having trouble.

Is this a new linksys router or one you already had set up and working at one point?

Also could you please tell me the model of linksys router?

Please let me know so I can further assist.

Thank You

Customer replied321 days and 1 hours ago.

This is a new router that I just bought in April from Staples. It is a LinkSys 4200. It worked until two days ago.

Thank You.

I know most internet service providers will not help with routers so I am not sure what they had you try so please forgive me if you have already done my suggestions.

First I am going to have you reboot your network, you may have tried some of this but it needs to be done the proper way to restore connectivity.

Please try the following and let me know what happens, pay special attention to the network icon on the bottom right of your computer screen once you connect it to the router, this will tell us what the issue is.

Unplug the power to the modem and the router

Remove the ethernet cable from your computer and plug the other end into the port on the router labeled internet.

Next plug the modem back in (do not plug the router back in yet)

Give the modem a chance to fully boot up(around 1 minute)

Now plug the router back allowing it a minute or so to boot.

Now you can take another ethernet cable and plug it into the Port 1 on the back of the router and you can plug the other end into your computer.

Pay attention to the network icon on the bottom right of the computer screen and let me know if connection is made or if you gives you an error.

Thank YouChris Shores41124.0352738079

Chris,

I just lost internet connection so I had to plug directly into computer and modem. Did you get my last response?

If not, when I did the steps above, I got an error message that stated, Currently connected to SnicklesHm, no Internet access.

Chris, Did you get my last response? I got disconnected from internet when I tried to connect to router. I am calling back. ,

I think i missed a reply.

But, is it only the routers wireless you cannot connect through, if you connect the computer to the router will you be able to get online?

Also after you reset your network did you reboot your computer?

Customer replied321 days and 1 hours ago.

If I connect directly to the computer, I can get internet. I cannot get internet through the wireless. I get the message, "Currently connected to SnicklesHm - No internet connection".

I did not reboot. If I reboot, how do I know I will not lose you?

Expert:  Chris Shores replied321 days and 1 hours ago.

You should have a link back to me in your email.

Also you can bookmark this page by pressing CTRL and D

Is SnicklesHM the name of your wireless network?

Do you have any other computers or devices in your home that can connect wirelessly?

Customer replied321 days and 1 hours ago.

SnicklesHm is the name of my wireless network and I have a guest setup. I have my phone, my IPAD and both of my TV's have Sony Google DVD Blue Ray Players. None of which I can get connected.

I am going to reboot with my router connected to the modem. I'll get back to you via link. But, if I cannot access internet, how can I access my email if I cannot log onto Yahoo?

Picture
Expert:  Chris Shores replied321 days and 1 hours ago.

You will need to plug directly into the modem and then reboot the modem.

If no device can connect through the router than the issue is between the router and modem.

Who if your internet provider?

Customer replied321 days and 1 hours ago.

Metrocast is my internet provider. I spent 1 1/2 hours with them today and we rebooted the modem and we had strong signals. The modem also reads that data is going through it.

What is strange is that when the router is connected, sometimes I get a plain white screen with just the IE logo. No pictures are coming through.

Picture
Expert:  Chris Shores replied321 days and 1 hours ago.

My apologies I have never done any work with metrocast so I will opt/out and send your question back to the other experts. I know that the issue seems to be between modem and router but I am not familiar with what metrocast requires for set up.

You will receive an email when they are ready to help you.

Thank You

Thank you! Am I now paying one fee or two?

Picture
Expert:  Viet - Network Tech replied321 days ago.

Hi,

Don't worry, there is only one fee, and we guarantee our service.

Please reconnect the modem, the computer (use the only computer that works when connected straight to the modem), and the power adapter to the linksys router device, then reset the router: make sure the router has power, then use a paper clip to press & hold the tiny reset hole/button located on the back/bottom of the router for 10 seconds. Then wait a few minutes, then

Then on that same computer, please go to the router's login page at http://192.168.1.1/ and login with the username blank (don't type anything) and the password XX admin
(if you cannot login, enter admin for the user name also).
Then look for the MAC Address Clone option to clone the router's MAC Address with the PC's MAC Address, then save, then wait a few minutes and check Internet if it works or not.

If Internet works, on the same computer, at the router's login page http://192.168.1.1/ , then you can go to the Wireless and Wireless Security options to set up your wireless network name and security.

Please let me know if there is still any issue. Thank you.

If you would like any additional information or have more questions please don’t hesitate to ask!

Thank you,

Customer replied321 days ago.

I tried this. When I try to go to the router's log in page, I get a plain white screen with the IE icon. Then I get cannot connect.

Picture
Expert:  Viet - Network Tech replied321 days ago.

Maker sure you connect the modem to the router's Internet/WAN port, and the computer to one of the router's Ethernet/LAN ports, then make sure you type the exact address 192.168.1.1

; if it does not work, with the computer connected to the router, can you click on Start, and type cmd and press Enter. Then type ipconfig and press Enter, then tell me the Default gateway?

Thank you,

Customer replied321 days ago.

It did not work and the default gateway says 192.168.1.1.

When I tried to go to the router's homepage, it stated to put in the disk and resetup CISCO Connect.

Picture
Expert:  Viet - Network Tech replied321 days ago.

Can you insert the router software cd disk when asked?

If you do not have the disk, can you download and save the router software at
http://tinyurl.com/cx9gav3

, then try my suggestion again, and run the downloaded software?

Thank you,

Customer replied321 days ago.

I inserted the disk and it asked me to set up my network name and password. I did that.

When I try to access the router's login page, I get Cannot connect to Internet.

Thank you for your help but I have now been doing this for quite some time. The router is not feeding to the modem. The internet works when plugged directly into the computer and the modem but does not work when I try to connect to the wireless. My phone will not pick up service, my son's phone will not pick up service and both of my TV's Sony Google internet blu-ray players will not pick up service.

My internet provider states it is not their problem and whenI took the router to Staples they told me it was working just fine.

I can do you steps above through Cisco connect. Do you want me to try there?

Sorry, I know, after logging in the router, can you clone the MAC address? Thank you,

Customer replied320 days and 23 hours ago.

I cannot do anything now. Cisco Connect will not even open.

Sorry, let me open your question to other Professionals. Thank you,

Customer replied320 days and 23 hours ago.

No other professionals. This is not working. You all are telling me to do exactly the same things as my internet providers.

Hello, Thank you for choosing our site to ask your question~!

My name is XXXX XXX I would like to assist you today.

What is the make/model of the metrocast modem?

Customer replied319 days and 8 hours ago.

Ryan,

The make and model of the Modem is ARRIS TM822. The internet works fine when I plug the computer directly into the modem. The internet does not work when I plug the computer into the router and then into the modem.

I took the router to Staples and they said the router was working fine and had a strong signal. Yet, none of us could use the wireless signal to log into our phones.

When I plug the router into the modem, I get a completely "white" IE screen. It states YAHOO and the blue globe just keeps spinning.

What lights are on on the router when you plug it in?
