I was unable to log onto the internet. I disconnected my router and connected the modem to the computer. This allowed me to log on. Do I need a new router?

what is the make and model of the router and modem?
router: linksys wrt54gs v7
modem: westell g90-610015-20
unplug power to modem and router
connect modem to router and router to computer.
plug power back to both modem and router
right click below link and click open in new window
http://192.168.1.1
leave user blank and enter admin for password
click basic setup
select PPPOE
enter your ISP user and password XXXXX click connect or apply. This is the same user and ID you use to access your isp website or email.
Give it a minute and now try to access internet
With the modem connected to the router and the router connected to the computer, I could not open the link you sent me, 192.168.1.1. Connecting the router between the modem and the computer when online, knocks me offline.
with the router connectedClick start, run and type cmd into the box and press enterIn big black box type ipconfig and press enterWhat is the default gateway address, something like 192.168.1.1
Default gateway address was 192.168.1.1.
Then that has to be the address to log into the router. Connect the router back and try manually typing that into the address bar.
I typed 192.168.1.1 into the address bar which brought up a screen that asked for username and password. I used admin for both. The router screen came up with the correct model number. Ityped in the host name and set the time zone and saved changes, all to no avail.
If you are not sure of your DSL user name and password XXXXX your ISP website when directly connected to modem and login there to test them. Not sure why the router wasn't blank and admin but if you got in then ok.You do not use a host name. Select basic settings. Select PPOE and enter your user name and password XXXXX DSL. This is not the admin you used before. Then click connect or apply. Then test internet.
