I am trying to connect my iPAD2 with a D-Link router which

Resolved Question:

I am trying to connect my iPAD2 with a D-Link router which services my home computer and laptop. How do I know what network to route to? I'm not a techie and my son set up the router. It is a D-link WBR-1310. Any suggestions?

TechGrant :

Hello, Do you know your wireless password XXXXX you router? That way we can establish the connection on the IPAD

Customer:

no

TechGrant :

Ok do you have a computer that is using the wireless right now?

Customer:

yes

TechGrant :

Is it Windows 7?

Customer:

yes

TechGrant :

ok, we need to get the NETWORK name that is connected to first ok

TechGrant :

so if you will look on the bottom right of the computer you will see 5 bars looks that start short and go big if you click on that another window will pop up and it will tell you what you are connected to

TechGrant :

this needs to be done on the windows 7 machine

Customer:

Network 3

Customer:

or NETWORK

TechGrant :

Does it say Currently Connect to?

Customer:

Yes, Network 3 - now I see an additional network below 2WIRE247

TechGrant :

Ok then after Network 3 it has green bars

TechGrant :

Just want to make sure

TechGrant :

because we will need to know that for the IPAD

TechGrant :

Your network might be secured it might not so lets do something on the IPAD

TechGrant :

If it si we will get the password XXXXX the windows 7 machine

TechGrant :

That windows machine is using the WIRELESS right and not using a cable to plug into the network?

Customer:

Yes

TechGrant :

Ok do you got your IPAD handy

Customer:

yes

TechGrant :

Goto your home screen on the IPADA then goto SETTINGS

TechGrant :

let me know when you are there

Customer:

there

TechGrant :

OK click on WIFI

TechGrant :

then on the top right click ON

Customer:

ok

TechGrant :

then it will ask to CHOOSE a network

TechGrant :

And it scans teh networks in range, do you see NETWORK 3

Customer:

no, but I see NETWORK

TechGrant :

or network

TechGrant :

now on NETWORK does it have a lock on it?

Customer:

yes

TechGrant :

ok then it has a password

TechGrant :

so we need to get that

TechGrant :

ready for the steps here

TechGrant :

Please click START then Click CONTROL PANEL

TechGrant :

do this on the WINDOWS 7 MACHINE

TechGrant :

then click NETWORK AND INTERNET

TechGrant :

click on NETWORK AND SHARING CENTER

TechGrant :

then on the LEFT hand side click on MANAGE WIRELESS NETWORKS

TechGrant :

now find NETWORK then RIGHT CLICK on it and hit PROPERTIES

TechGrant :

now click the SECURITY TAB

TechGrant :

then on the bottom click SHOW CHARCTERS

TechGrant :

then in the PASSPHRASE it will trun from dots to a password

TechGrant :

let me know whne you have done that

TechGrant :

it might say "network security key" instead of passphrase

TechGrant :

anyways that is the password XXXXX NETWORK

TechGrant :

so then on the IPAD select NETWORK in the WIFI screen then it will ask for a password XXXXX put that password XXXXX you just got and then it should be good to go

Customer:

I have the password

TechGrant :

so then on the IPAD select NETWORK in the WIFI screen then it will ask for a password XXXXX put that password XXXXX

TechGrant :

it is case sensitve too, so if there is a capital make sure you put a capital

TechGrant :

Then on the TOP left of the IPAD where it says IPAD a new sysmbol will appear like a wireless meter symbol meaning you are connected

Customer:

I see the symbol.

TechGrant :

ok now try safari please

TechGrant :

to verify

Customer:

it says that safari cannot open the page because it itsn't connected to the internet.

TechGrant :

is the symbol still on the top left?

TechGrant :

next to IPAD?

Customer:

yes - should i try it again?

TechGrant :

Lets go back to WIFI please

TechGrant :

Now next to Network does it have a CHECK MARK?

Customer:

no

TechGrant :

ok TAP network

TechGrant :

does it ask for a password?

Customer:

no but the little circular symbol keeps going around (to the left of NETWORK)

TechGrant :

ok do you see that the RIGHT net to the Lock and symbol looks like a blue CHEVRON symbo >

TechGrant :

RIGHT ARROW

TechGrant :

>

Customer:

yes

TechGrant :

it should be blue ont he same LINE network is on

TechGrant :

ok

TechGrant :

tap that blue right arrow

TechGrant :

does it give you a IP address?

Customer:

ok

Customer:

yes

TechGrant :

does it start with 169?

Customer:

yes

TechGrant :

ok then it didnt get a proper IP

TechGrant :

ok you see up top where it says FORGET THIS NETWORK

TechGrant :

clikc that then click FORGET

Customer:

done

TechGrant :

ok now under choose a network

TechGrant :

you will see NETWORK

TechGrant :

tap that then does it ask for a password?

Customer:

yes

TechGrant :

ok

TechGrant :

now dont put it in yet

TechGrant :

want to verify something

TechGrant :

now on your windows 7 computer you followed my steps to get the network security key correct?

TechGrant :

did it have any capitals in it?

Customer:

I don't think so but will go back and check -

TechGrant :

ok well we need to just make sure that it was 100% right when you typed it in the IPAD

TechGrant :

because after you type the password XXXXX on the ipad then hit JOIN the network should then have a checkmark to the left of it

TechGrant :

then the internet will work

TechGrant :

make sure you RIGHT CLICK on NETWORK on the manage wireless networks section

TechGrant :

let me know please, thanks

TechGrant :

TechGrant :

That has a picture of the check mark next to the network name

Customer:

It still has the choosing circle of incompletion. I rechecked the password.

TechGrant :

give it a second

TechGrant :

and we will see if it connected

TechGrant :

connects

TechGrant :

because if you are sure thats the password XXXXX should connect

TechGrant :

doesnt make any sense there unless some filtering was turned on in the ROUTER

TechGrant :

I would suggest we turn off the ipad and try again

TechGrant :

Turn off the IPAD then lets turn off the router for about 15 seconds then plug the router back in then tunr the ipad back on

TechGrant :

stay in the room it will disconnect you for a moment but reconnect you after it re connected

Customer:

It works!!! Thanks so much. I'm actually in Safari.

TechGrant :

ok good stuff!

TechGrant :

Will you please hit ACCEPT on the bottom right, postive feedback and bonuses are greatly appreciated!

Customer:

so what happens now? do I click save and exit on this sceen?

TechGrant :

On the bottom right does it say ACCEPT?

TechGrant :

it should be in GREEN
