Hello. My name isXXXXX will be your Primary Care Technician and I can assist you with your question.
Is there a proxy server on your network, or are the settings erroneous?
Hi. I am not sure of the right answer. Can you explain what I could look for.
Tell me what you are experiencing. that would be a good place to start
If there are errors, I will need the exact wording
My PC is no longer able connect to the internet either by direct connect via DSL modem or via wireless router. I did trouble shooting to detect problem and it says I need to fix network proxy setting.
Ok. I know those aren't the exact words, but I will try to work with it.
So let's try this.
Open internet explorer.
And then select internet options.
The wording: "Windows could not automatically detect this network's proxy setting" It also shows "limited connectivity when I try to connecttot he internet.
Select the connections tab
I have the connection tab open now
Ok... then click the LAN setting button
On the next page, is there an information where the proxy settings are?
I'm guessing it says "automatically detect proxy...
and that is checked
I am not sure what it should read. I seeseveral things
That sounds like a yes.
Automatically detect settingsis checked
I don't need you to read anythging.
Now, before I have you change this. Do you have any reason to believe that you are supposed to be using a proxy server (for 99%of internet users, that would be "no")
stay with me here.
don't get ahead
I dont know. I have a router that connects my computers
OK... so no. If you used a proxy server, you would immediately know the answer. So that's good.
Change that check mark to no proxy server.
Rather... make it so nothing is checked on that page
Do youmean uncheck the "automatically detect setting"?
Are any of the other boxes checked?
So apply that or click ok.
And then try going to a known good site like google
You may have to restart the computer.
ok. I will restart
I am waitingf or restart to complete
Restarted. Not able to open the internet
Has anything changed at all?
I cant tell. Does not look like anything changed.
Are you getting the same error message about the proxy?
I am checking
What do you have to do to reproduce the error? Just go through the diagnosis?
When I trouble shoot to connection to the router
I will gothrough the diagnosis now
Now it says "troubleshooting couldn't identify theproblem". This is new
Ok. So that's a step.
The proxy error is solved... you had to get that out of the way first.
Is the computer wired or wireless?
Which way are we working on it.
Wired would be best
wireless reports the proxy problem
So, does wired work?
Ok. I have it connected to the router by cable
Wireddoes not work
And you should have wireless disabled. Is that the case?
I will go aheadand disable it now
Then we just need to make sure the wired interface is set for DHCP and then restart.
What do I need to do for the DHCP
I'm not saying each step is a complete fix
Go to the network adapters
right click on the connected wired adapter and go to properties
then click on Internet Protocol V4
and click configure.
You will either see numbers next or nothing except for a radio button selected on each of two options
Do you see numbers there or is it mostly blank with automatic chosen
Nothing. Opened to a different window. I clickedon confure. Did nothave optionfor properties
Ok. You need to go back to where it says internet protocol V4
click on that.
Then click on properties
Then a window will come up with a general tab
properties is grayed out. Not able to click on it
Did you first select Internet protocol V4
Yes. Itis still selected
Is there a check next to it?
Are you an administrator on that computer?
So this isn't making sense.
Let me send you a screeshot
And you must be looking at your wired adapter
Looks same. I am looking at the wired.
And you cannot click on properties?
No.It is gray.
What about uninstall
Uninstall is also gray. But install is active
Is there anything on that list that gives you at least the uninstall?
Internet protocol v6 give me both properties and install, but not uninstall
Ok. Try removing the check next to that.
And on V4, remove the check and then place the check back
There are 5 other items that show uninstall
Something isn't right.
You should be able to go to properties on that IPV4
What does it say at the top?
Broadcom Netlink (TM) Gigabit Ethernet
OK... now go back to where you just have the adapters showing
Make sure there are no other open setttings pages for network items
Click on the wired network adapter and then at the top, click view stats of this connection
then click on details
IT should say there DHCP
And IP address
Did. it is empty
Ok... now we need to go to device manager.
Right click on computer and select manage
Then click on device manager
look on the right for network adapters
How many are there?
right click on each and select uninstall
Including the wireless adapter?
you can leave that one
ok. I have 2 left - DW 1525 (802.11n) and WAN Miniport - this one will not uninstall
Everything will be working now
Should I try to connect?
did it recognize and install all the adapters?
Yes it recognized the broadcom and installed it. Did not say anything about the others
So everything is working now
Did not connect to the internet.
But it is working now, correct?
IF you go back into the adapter settings, you should be able to configure the IPV4
Oh.I will openit now
Should I highlight IPV$ and click on configure?
I mean IPV4
Is it set for DHCP?
Remind me where should I click for that
click on ipv4
Still grey on properties. Should I click install instead?
No, that won't work.
This is very unusual.
Please go to start>all programs>accessories then right click on the command prompt icon and select run as administrator.
Then in the window that opened, type
and press enter
That should give you some information
did the black window open with a command prompt?
where you can type?
Yes. I typed in the command. It moved down to the same command in the next line
Did you right click on command prompt and select "run as administrator"?
Do you have security software/firewalls on that computer that you can disable?
I have to find it
Do that and try turning it off... this is all pretty unusual.
It is 3AM here, and I have to take abreak for the night.
I will be back online around
Noon Eastern time
Ok. Will I be able to find you?
You can just come back to justanswer
and click on my questions
or you can add this page to your favorites
and come back to it.
ok. I appreciate your patience and help.
BTW... was this computer working before on your network?
Or is it possible it was on a business network at some point?
Do you want me to click the "accept" button for you now
That would be good. If you do that, you will be able to leave me messages.
It was working. No, it was not a business computer
Ok. I will do that.
We'll get back on it tomorrow
Mike, will I be able to find your message box easily?
Hi Mike, this is UL from last night. Are you online?
Hi, I am here. How are you doing?
Are you still here?
Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore,
Select a date and time prior to when you started having the issue.
