Hello. My name is XXXXX XXXXX X will be your Network expert.

You cannot delete an account holders email address without closing the account. However if the email address is not used in a six month period the AOL system will remove it automatically for you. This would be better if you do not want to close out the account.

Customer replied 590 days and 20 hours ago.

He died three years ago. AOL did not remove his email address. Now, someone has hacked into it and is sending spam to everyone in his address book. I'm very concerned and need this taken care of immediately. What do I do now?

OK. Then it is time to close the account. The best and fasted way to do this is to call them at the number below.

Dial AOL customer service at(NNN) NNN-NNNN When prompted, say the word "cancellation" in a clear voice. You will be transferred to a customer service representative.

I called and was informed that live customer support is not included with my current plan. They referred me to Help.AOL.com which is how I found you.

OK then the account he had was a free account and the method for closing it is a bit more time consuming but it needs to be done. Here are the steps to follow.

  • Log on to the billing website for AOL. To identify yourself as the account holder enter your username and password. You will then be prompted to enter your personal security question. Type the answer and click on the green "continue" button below the answer bar.

  • 2

Look to the blue "I want to.." bar on the right side of your account overview. Click on the seventh bullet point for "Cancel my billing." Even for a free AOL email account, you choose this option.

  • 3

Click on "5. How do I cancel my free account?" within the blue panel for frequently asked questions. A window will open with detailed information about this process.

  • 4

Click the blue hyperlink in the third paragraph to process your request online. On the next screen, you will receive information that doesn't apply to someone canceling a free AOL email account. Click the blue "Cancel" button to proceed.

  • 5

Fill in all the identifying information about you and your account in the online form. You must click the box that reads: "If you do not want your account to be converted to free, or if you want to cancel your free account, check here." Your request will not be processed if this box is left unchecked. Click "Submit." A new window should appear telling you that your attempt has been successful.

Since I want to keep my account (temporarily) should I log in using his email address?

Most definitely. You need to log on using his identity in order to close the ccount. AOL will not allow you to close it if you are logged in using your identity.

Customer replied 590 days and 19 hours ago.

I logged in using his account. I could not answer the security question, so pressed "forgot answer?". It went back to log in and asked for his password. When I entered the password, it went back to the screen with the security question. I did this three times; all three produced the same result. ?

If you are unable to log in because you cannot answer the security question and this is a free account, there is no way to access it and closing it down will not be possible. For security reasons and to help keep hackers out of accounts you must be able to log in to close an account. Using the forgot password XXXXX not help because it will send a security code or temp password XXXXX the same account which obviously you cannot enter. A hacker has gotten and and changed the security question and he/she is controlling your husbands account and about all you can do is try to let your husbands contacts aware of it.
