My computer will not let me double click the icons to open

Customer Question

My computer will not let me double click the icons to open any file. This problem started two days ago. I have Mcafee antivirus and downloaded Malware bytes in safe mode and found 40 viruses. Have run both antiviruses for 2 days and it says I am virus free. Do you have a solution to this problem?

Viet - Network Tech :

Hi, and thanks for using JustAnswer.com.

Viet - Network Tech :

do you have windows vista?

Viet - Network Tech :

So you cannot open any program/file?

Viet - Network Tech :

Is there any error message?

Customer:

I can open any program and file...I just can't double click on it to open it. For instance...when I turn my computer on and Firefox icon comes up on my desktop. I normally could just double click on it to open it. Now I have to right click on my laptop and then right click to open.

Viet - Network Tech :

is there any error message when double-clicking?

Customer:

NO

Viet - Network Tech :

Do you have windows vista?

Customer:

yes

Viet - Network Tech :

how about double-clicking a file from a folder?

Customer:

I have to left click before a folder or icon will open.

Customer:

I have gone to folders and clicked on organize and then changed it to single click...nothing happens. Gone back to a folder and changed it to double click. Nothing happens.

Customer:

or right click to open firefox.

Customer:

Cannot just tap my laptop pad.

Viet - Network Tech :

can you go to Start, control panel, hardware and sound

Viet - Network Tech :

then open the mouse/touchpad item

Viet - Network Tech :

and check all the options?

Customer:

did that but will do it now again.

Viet - Network Tech :

ok,

Customer:

mouse properties says synaptics touch pad v6.3 ps/2 port. Right hand click has been checked.

Customer:

double click speed is in the middle.

Viet - Network Tech :

adjust the double-click speed

Customer:

I moved it to slower but it still won't let me open the folder to the right (the example)

Viet - Network Tech :

uncheck the right-click

Viet - Network Tech :

and click OK

Viet - Network Tech :

then recheck

Customer:

It says if the folder does not open then try a slower speed. I have tried that doesn't work.

Customer:

I have to check right hand click or left hand.

Customer:

Do you want me to check the left hand?

Viet - Network Tech :

yes,

Viet - Network Tech :

try that also

Customer:

I checked the left hand one and it will not let me click ok.

Customer:

It just keeps asking me What's this?

Viet - Network Tech :

try right-click

Customer:

It let me click apply this time. When I right-clicked.

Customer:

and ok.

Viet - Network Tech :

ok,

Customer:

now what?

Viet - Network Tech :

check double-click

Customer:

nothing opens when I double clik.

Customer:

click.

Customer:

Still does NOT work.

Viet - Network Tech :

sorry, I'm checking.

Viet - Network Tech :

then open/extract them and run the extracted files and confirm

Customer:

I saw your downloads and then all of a sudden the right bar went up and will not let me scroll down.

Customer:

Something is definitely going on because I can't view what you are writing or what I am writing . Please send me the downloads to my email.

Customer:

I got it down finally.

Viet - Network Tech :

ok, thanks.

Customer:

What are these downloads? And how many spaces did you put between x and vista.zip

Customer:

Is this free help with someone or what?

Customer:

windows help online?

Viet - Network Tech :

it's not a space

Viet - Network Tech :

it's one underline character

Viet - Network Tech :

can you just click on it?

Viet - Network Tech :

I found the fix from the site

Viet - Network Tech :

it's free

Customer:

You want me to click on it now?

Viet - Network Tech :

yes

Customer:

Ok I just clicked on them and added them to the registry.

Customer:

Now what.

Viet - Network Tech :

now check right-click

Viet - Network Tech :

I mean

Viet - Network Tech :

double-click

Customer:

still doesn't work. I have to right click each folder and then right click on the word open.

Viet - Network Tech :

Sorry, I will open your question to other experts.

Viet - Network Tech :

Please do not wait; you will get an email when there is an answer, thank you.

Customer:

ok. How do I get back to you tomorrow?

Viet - Network Tech :

we will email you

Customer:

ok. Thanks, XXXXX XXXXX this can be solved.

Customer:

Good night.

Viet - Network Tech :

you're welcome, good night!

Viet - Network Tech :

I have found the solution.

Viet - Network Tech :

Please download and open/extract the two new files below:
http://www.winhelponline.com/fileasso/dirfix_vista.zip
http://www.winhelponline.com/fileasso/folderfix_vista.zip

Viet - Network Tech :

Then run the two extracted files and confirm, then check (restart the computer if needed.)

Viet - Network Tech :

Please let me know if there is still any issue later; please let me know if this works or not. Thank you.

Customer:

Hello,

Customer:

It still does NOT work.

Customer:

I downloaded the two zips and nothing happened.

Customer:

I still cannot double click on any folder or on firefox or anything to open it. I have to right click and then click open.

Customer:

Please contact me because this is not working.

Viet - Network Tech :

did you download & run the two fixes and confirm Yes when prompted, then restart the computer and check?

Customer:

Yes, I did. and I just did it again. Nothing happens. I still cannot double click.

Viet - Network Tech :

So you've confirmed the Registry Editor fix, but it did not work.

Viet - Network Tech :

Sorry, I'm out of suggestions, but I will open your question to other experts. Please do not wait; you will get an email when there is an answer. Thank you.

Customer:

It did not work....that is correct.

Customer:

I need an answer for the problem on my computer. If you cannot fix it then I want my deposit back!

Customer:

I just ran my antivirus again in safe mode and found no viruses. I can double click in safe mode.

Viet - Network Tech :

Sorry, it looks like no one has the answer, but let me check.

Viet - Network Tech :

Please click Start, then type msconfig and press Enter. Then click on the Startup tab and uncheck all the boxes, except your antivirus/security program. Then click on the Services tab and check the box at Hide all Microsoft services near the bottom. Then uncheck all the services, except your antivirus/security program. Then click OK, and restart the computer and check.

Viet - Network Tech :

If that still does not work, go to Start, Control Panel, user accounts, manage another account and create a new administrator account, then restart the computer and login the new administrator account and see if you can double-click.

Viet - Network Tech :

Actually, please try this first: click Start->All programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore and restore the computer to any date before this issue has occurred.

Viet - Network Tech :

If that does not work, please click Start, then type msconfig and press Enter.

Please let me know if there is still any issue later. Thank you.

Customer:

I just did system restore....it did not work.

Viet - Network Tech :

Please try my next two suggestions as needed (msconfig and new administrator account). Thank you.

Customer:

I did try misconfig didn't work. I also just created a new administrator account....of course, this works because now I have none of my files or anything else there to work with. I can double click on the icons that are there but just as soon as I transfer my files over(which I don't know how to do) it will stop working.

Customer:

Are you going to walk me through transferring all my data. That could take days and then I am not assured it will work.

Viet - Network Tech :

transferring data is quick

Customer:

then walk me through it.

Viet - Network Tech :

go to Start, Computer, C: drive, Users, then the old account name

Viet - Network Tech :

then you can go to documents, pictures, etc. folders

Viet - Network Tech :

desktop, music, favorites folder, etc.

Viet - Network Tech :

and move the files to similar locations on the new account

Viet - Network Tech :

Please let me know how it goes later. Thank you.

Customer:

I went to start, computer, c:drive, users, then the old account name....now what do you click on????

Customer:

It just says organize, view, or burn and has all the files listed below.

Viet - Network Tech :

for example, open the Desktop folder

Viet - Network Tech :

then select all the folders/files

Viet - Network Tech :

then move/cut them to the Desktop folder of the new account

Customer:

It says that to copy my documents will take 3 hrs. and 48 min. ???

Customer:

I did copy and paste and that is how long it is going to take.

Viet - Network Tech :

ahh, don't copy and paste

Customer:

This is insane....this is not fixing the problem! I am just creating a new account.

Viet - Network Tech :

Cut and paste

Customer:

ok will try that.

Viet - Network Tech :

ok, thanks

Viet - Network Tech :

cancel it and cut and paste, then it will be quick

Customer:

when i cut and paste my documents or my pictures it says it is like 87,000 items. That is not correct. This is not working correctly. I am having to go back and enter into the old administrator and then cut and then enter into the new administrator and paste and then it says it will take 4 hours or so even though I cut and paste. Something is not working properly on this.

Viet - Network Tech :

that is strange.

Viet - Network Tech :

I can remote to your computer and fix

Viet - Network Tech :

Are you logging to the new administrator account now?

Customer:

yes I am in the new administrator....help.

Customer:

what do I need to do.

Viet - Network Tech :

then click on "I agree..." and click on Run/Allow whenever prompted

Viet - Network Tech :

That is it.

Viet - Network Tech :

Do you need anything else?

Customer:

did you download everything?

Viet - Network Tech :

yes,

Customer:

ok.

Viet - Network Tech :

you can verify some now

Customer:

I will check and see and let you know.

Viet - Network Tech :

ok,

Customer:

thanks,

Customer:

ok will check it out and get back to you.

Viet - Network Tech :

You're welcome.

Viet - Network Tech :

ok, thanks.

Viet - Network Tech :

Please let me know the result any time. Thank you.

Customer:

Everything seems to be working ok right now. I will wait a few days and then accept.

Viet - Network Tech :

OK, thank you for the update.

Customer:

I have used my computer for several days and now that I am in a new administrator it is working fine. Of course, I could have done that already, but wanted to keep my old administrator view. Thanks for your help in cutting and pasting my files and folders. Thank you.

Customer:

Therefore, I am accepting.
