Ok, please follow the steps below to reset the router. Please note the wireless network name will be changed to "linksys" or "Cisco" and no password XXXX be asked (we can setup a password XXXXX all is working OK)

1- Make sure the wireless router is turned ON.

2- Press and hold down the "reset" button on the back of your router for 30 seconds. The reset button is inside a very tiny hole on the back of the router. Please use a paper clip to push it for 30 seconds

3- Then release the button and wait 60 seconds. (yes, 60 seconds please)

4- Then unplug the router from the electricity outlet, wait 10 seconds and replug it to the electricity outlet

5- Make sure the internet modem is connected to the "WAN" or the "Internet" port on the back of the router

6- Unplug the internet modem from the electricity outlet, wait 10 seconds and then replug it to the electricity outlet.

7- Wait 5 minutes (yes, 5 minutes please)

8- Then from your Mac, click the airport icon on the top bar and select the "Linksys" or "Cisco" wireless network.

9- Please let me know if the issue is not solved clicking the "Reply to your expert" gray button, so we can continue troubleshooting.

10- If I helped please scroll down and click the green Accept button for me to be paid, that's the only way for me to be compensated for my time (Even if you have a subscription or trial plan with us I need you to click Accept for me to be paid from JustAnswer. And even if you have a regular account and see the holding charge in your credit/debit/PayPal account, I need you to click Accept for the money to be released to me)

Thank you

OK, if you reset the router following my previous steps, then the router will not ask for a password XXXXXXX (we can setup a password XXXXX all is working OK). If you reset the router but you still get prompted to enter a password, then the reset didn't work.

Please try again following the steps below "to the T" and let me know:

9- If I helped please scroll down and click the green Accept button for me to be paid, that's the only way for me to be compensated for my time (Even if you have a subscription or trial plan with us I need you to click Accept for me to be paid from JustAnswer. And even if you have a regular account and see the holding charge in your credit/debit/PayPal account, I need you to click Accept for the money to be released to me)

Thank you

Still not working John. Linksys shows up in the airport drop down, unlocked (as it should be), but accessing the internet still doesn't happen. Email doesn't work either.

I got as far as the list of preferred networks, but couldn't select any of them - all were grey.

You must be administrator of the machine in order to be able to remove the networks.

I was before my technical call with Earthlink (lost internet connection while working). How do I set that up?

Do they created a new user account on your computer? When you turn on the computer, do you get prompted to select a user account? (do you have more than one?) Thank you

Customer replied 669 days and 15 hours ago.

No, not that I know of.

I did restart my computer when I first started having problems this morning, and was asked only for my password - normal procedure.

Yesterday, when I finished with earthlink tech support, we confirmed I had internet connection, but didn't think to check it was my router. This morning when I started to have intermittent connection, I realized I was using their router and coudn't get access mine.

Customer replied 669 days and 15 hours ago.

Is this an earthlink problem?

Picture
Expert:  Engineer John C. replied 669 days and 15 hours ago.

OK, please try connecting to the router with a Network cable and let me know if you get internet. (disconnect from your neighbor's wifi first)

Customer replied 669 days and 15 hours ago.

Ok, I connected the network cable directly from computer to router (disconnecting from neighbor's first), and no connection.

Yes, then it seems a router or provider issue. If you connect the computer directly to the modem (bypassing the router), does it work fine?

Customer replied 669 days and 15 hours ago.

Yes, I did that yesterday with earthlink and it worked fine.

Next stop earthlink?

Well, there are several issues here. You should be able to remove the "Preferred Networks" under the "Network" tab even if the router works or not. 1- Please click the apple icon on the upper left corner of your screen

2- Then click System Preferences

3- Then click "Show All"

4- Then click your account name under "My Account", and let me know if you see the word "Admin" under it, or the word "Standard"
