I attempted your solution but still have the same problem. I had tried this before with the same result. The laptop finds the modem just fine but will only connect as a local connection and not on the internet. I use this laptop at many other wifi locations with no issues. Do you have any other suggestions. I think this is a much more difficult issue. I know that may have been a starting point but I think we need to dig much deeper into a technical solution. Computer tech stuff that I have no knowledge of.

Disabled Norton Smart Firewall. How do I know if I have other firewalls on my system? It is an HP laptop.
Followed instructions to uninstall wireless adapter. Everything went as you described except when I clicked "scan for hardware changes" the system automatically scanned and reinstalled the device. I was never prompted to (click next > next > finish). I am sure that is not a big deal.
The wireless adapter is: Atheros AR5007 802.11b/g wifi adapter. Could this be corrupted and maybe I just need a new wireless adapter / card?

Yes. I have a desktop computer directly connected and multiple of devices.
3 other laptops
All are connected to the internet using the same router. That is why I can't figure it out. I worked just fine on the old router before it died. I bought a new one the same day the other one died and every other system connected to the internet but this one laptop. Again this same laptop connects to any other wifi system just fine. Work, other friends houses, hotels, etc...

I tried this when I couldn't connect the first time after installing the new router. I just tried it again to a restore point back in Dec. Probably shouldn't have though. I am now realizing that more time has passed than I thought. I installed the new modem and router back on Nov. 21st. I don't have any restore points earlier than Dec. 26th. Are we running out of options?

By the way the system restore didn't work. Something wrong with the restore point. Said nothing was changed and restore failed.

I am now working off the laptop with the issues. I currently have it connected to the internet through the router via ethernet. I could not get it to connect directly from the modem. I downloaded both attachments and rebooted. Still have same issue. Local Only access with no internet. Still says "unidentified". I don't know if I can test the wireless while I am connected via ethernet. I did disconnect the ethernet before rebooting so I could check the wireless status though.

Ok. I no longer have my Windows disk. Do you know if I can contact Microsoft for a new software code for downloading? Or is Windows not downloadable? I appreciate all of your help on this. Once I get Windows reinstalled I will update you on my "success"! I hope!
I know this is a different question for a different laptop but if you are able to answer I would appreciate it. I have a newer laptop that the fan constantly runs in high speed mode and is very loud. What can I do if anything?
So you don't think Microsoft would help me on this one? Can I install any Window's CD on the laptop or does it have to be the same version of what is on it now. Just trying to save money.
Even though we have not come to a conclusion or fix for my problem, I can still click "Accept Answer" at any time, correct? What happens if I still have more questions once I reinstall Microsoft?
