Networking Extraordinaire :

Greetings,

Networking Extraordinaire :

- Click Start Button
- Type: CMD
- Hit Enter
- In the black window, type the following and press Enter: ipconfig
- Press Enter
- What is shown for the Default Gateway?

The default gateway is the ip address that you need to access.

Networking Extraordinaire :

If it still doesn't work, unplug the power to the router, wait 10 seconds, then plug it back in.

Customer:

Do you mean click start, run, cmd?

Networking Extraordinaire :

Yes

Networking Extraordinaire :

Which operating system are you running?

Networking Extraordinaire :

It lists vista

Customer:

My laptop is owned by my employer (FHPS, a public school) and I do not have the "run" option in my start up window

Networking Extraordinaire :

ok

Networking Extraordinaire :

Why did you ask about the run option then?

Networking Extraordinaire :

- Click the Start button > Programs > Accessories > Command Line

- In the black window, type the following and press Enter: ipconfig
- Press Enter
- What is shown for the Default Gateway?

Customer:

no command line there either. . .

Networking Extraordinaire :

Ok

Networking Extraordinaire :

Press WINDOWS KEY + R

Networking Extraordinaire :

In the run box, type CMD and press Enter

Customer:

ok. good. my default gateway is 69.246.40.1

Networking Extraordinaire :

Ok

Networking Extraordinaire :

That is why you cannot access 192.168.1.1

Networking Extraordinaire :

May I ask why you are trying to access 192.168.1.1 ?

Networking Extraordinaire :

You can only access the 192.168.1.1 router configuration page if you are plugged into the router or connected to it wirelessly.

Customer:

I have a linksys MAC wireless filter. I want to edit it to allow my mother in law to use my internet.

Networking Extraordinaire :

Ok

Customer:

I mean my mother in law's laptop

Networking Extraordinaire :

In the black window, type the following: ping 192.168.1.1

Press Enter

Do you get replies or request timed outs?

Customer:

request timed out

Networking Extraordinaire :

Ok

Networking Extraordinaire :

That is because you are not plugged into the router.

Networking Extraordinaire :

You are now plugged into the modem directly, correct?

Networking Extraordinaire :

- Unplug your computer from the modem
- Only plug your computer directly into the ROUTER ONLY
- Then you will be able to access the 192.168.1.1 page on your router.

Customer:

exactly. I was trying t get my mom "permission" for the wireless, and now none of us have wireless.

Customer:

I can look for another "ethernet cord" is that what you call it? But I only have one right now. It goes from my Comcast box to my laptop.

Networking Extraordinaire :

You can ONLY access the router configuration page if you plug directly into the router. Please, do that Now and then you will be able to access the 192.168.1.1 page.

Also, plug the MODEM into the ROUTER. ONLY the router can be plugged into the modem.

Networking Extraordinaire :

Ok

Customer:

Typically this cord goes from thecomast box to my wireless router.

Networking Extraordinaire :

Use that same ethernet cord to plug the modem into the router. Then connect wirelessly to the router.

Networking Extraordinaire :

By the way, I have installed several hundred wireless networks in my time. Mac Filtering in my opinion is a total waste of time; it causes more headache than it is worth.

If someone is trying to 'hack' your wireless network, it truly only takes about five seconds to bypass the mac filtering.

Customer:

Ok, but that's been the problem. My internet is not opening through the wireless. As I was editting my MAC filter settings- we lost all internet connection.

Customer:

It says "internet explorer cannot display" "no connection"

Networking Extraordinaire :

Ok

Networking Extraordinaire :

- Connect the computer to the router
- Disable Mac Filtering
- Save
- Plug the modem back into the router

Networking Extraordinaire :

Do that please.

Customer:

Ok. Hope I don't lose you!

Networking Extraordinaire :

If you do, log back into the site please and pull up this chat window.

Customer:

I don't think this makes sense. Are you telling me to take my ethernet cord out of my comcast box and put it into my linksys box?

Networking Extraordinaire :

That is exactly what I am telling you.

Networking Extraordinaire :

- Connect the computer to the router with the cable
- Disable Mac Filtering
- Save
- Plug the modem back into the router
- Connect to the router wirelessly

Customer:

I could run outside to my storage shed and dig through my "cords box" and find another ethernet cord. Is that what I need?

Networking Extraordinaire :

No.

Networking Extraordinaire :

Please, do the following

Networking Extraordinaire :

- Connect the computer to the router with the cable
- Disable Mac Filtering
- Save
- Plug the modem back into the router
- Connect to the router wirelessly

Customer:

But then I will not have internet to disable mac filtering. . . are you saying I would disable through that 192.168.. . .. or is there another way I am not aware of?

Networking Extraordinaire :

You will have access to the ROUTER, whcih is where the mac filtering is saved.

Networking Extraordinaire :

Please, do exactly as I said.

Networking Extraordinaire :

- Connect the computer to the router with the cable
- Disable Mac Filtering
- Save
- Plug the modem back into the router
- Connect to the router wirelessly

Networking Extraordinaire :

There are five steps, just complete the five steps and your problem will be resolved.

Customer:

That makes sense. BUt I guess I need more info on how to disable the filtering. . . how do I open that up on my computer. . . does it come up like a D drive, or a program?

Networking Extraordinaire :

On a computer that is connected to the router, perform the steps below:
- Click the following link ---> http://192.168.1.1
Leave the username blank
The default password XXXXX admin
- Click the Wireless link
- Click the Wireless Mac Filter link

- Choose DISABLED

- Click Save/Apply button.

Networking Extraordinaire :

Please, do that now.

Networking Extraordinaire :

I will stand by and await your return.

Customer:

Ok, I did that, but when I clicked on that link, it says "internet explorer display webpage"

Networking Extraordinaire :

Do it again, but restart your computer before going to the 192.168.1.1 page

Networking Extraordinaire :

Plug the computer into the router and then restart the computer.

On a computer that is connected to the router, perform the steps below:

- Click the following link ---> http://192.168.1.1
Leave the username blank
The default password XXXXX admin
- Click the Wireless link
- Click the Wireless Mac Filter link

- Choose DISABLED

- Click Save/Apply button.
