- Click Start Button - Type: CMD- Hit Enter- In the black window, type the following and press Enter: ipconfig- Press Enter- What is shown for the Default Gateway? The default gateway is the ip address that you need to access.
If it still doesn't work, unplug the power to the router, wait 10 seconds, then plug it back in.
Do you mean click start, run, cmd?
Which operating system are you running?
It lists vista
My laptop is owned by my employer (FHPS, a public school) and I do not have the "run" option in my start up window
Why did you ask about the run option then?
- Click the Start button > Programs > Accessories > Command Line- In the black window, type the following and press Enter: ipconfig- Press Enter- What is shown for the Default Gateway?
no command line there either. . .
Press WINDOWS KEY + R
In the run box, type CMD and press Enter
ok. good. my default gateway is 126.96.36.199
That is why you cannot access 192.168.1.1
May I ask why you are trying to access 192.168.1.1 ?
You can only access the 192.168.1.1 router configuration page if you are plugged into the router or connected to it wirelessly.
I have a linksys MAC wireless filter. I want to edit it to allow my mother in law to use my internet.
I mean my mother in law's laptop
In the black window, type the following: ping 192.168.1.1Press EnterDo you get replies or request timed outs?
request timed out
That is because you are not plugged into the router.
You are now plugged into the modem directly, correct?
- Unplug your computer from the modem- Only plug your computer directly into the ROUTER ONLY- Then you will be able to access the 192.168.1.1 page on your router.
exactly. I was trying t get my mom "permission" for the wireless, and now none of us have wireless.
I can look for another "ethernet cord" is that what you call it? But I only have one right now. It goes from my Comcast box to my laptop.
You can ONLY access the router configuration page if you plug directly into the router. Please, do that Now and then you will be able to access the 192.168.1.1 page. Also, plug the MODEM into the ROUTER. ONLY the router can be plugged into the modem.
Typically this cord goes from thecomast box to my wireless router.
Use that same ethernet cord to plug the modem into the router. Then connect wirelessly to the router.
By the way, I have installed several hundred wireless networks in my time. Mac Filtering in my opinion is a total waste of time; it causes more headache than it is worth. If someone is trying to 'hack' your wireless network, it truly only takes about five seconds to bypass the mac filtering.
Ok, but that's been the problem. My internet is not opening through the wireless. As I was editting my MAC filter settings- we lost all internet connection.
It says "internet explorer cannot display" "no connection"
- Connect the computer to the router- Disable Mac Filtering- Save- Plug the modem back into the router
Do that please.
Ok. Hope I don't lose you!
If you do, log back into the site please and pull up this chat window.
I don't think this makes sense. Are you telling me to take my ethernet cord out of my comcast box and put it into my linksys box?
That is exactly what I am telling you.
- Connect the computer to the router with the cable- Disable Mac Filtering- Save- Plug the modem back into the router- Connect to the router wirelessly
I could run outside to my storage shed and dig through my "cords box" and find another ethernet cord. Is that what I need?
Please, do the following
But then I will not have internet to disable mac filtering. . . are you saying I would disable through that 192.168.. . .. or is there another way I am not aware of?
You will have access to the ROUTER, whcih is where the mac filtering is saved.
Please, do exactly as I said.
There are five steps, just complete the five steps and your problem will be resolved.
That makes sense. BUt I guess I need more info on how to disable the filtering. . . how do I open that up on my computer. . . does it come up like a D drive, or a program?

Ok, I did that, but when I clicked on that link, it says "internet explorer display webpage"
Do it again, but restart your computer before going to the 192.168.1.1 page
