I have a Netgear WG111v3 Wireless-G USB Adapter on our home

Resolved Question:

I have a Netgear WG111v3 Wireless-G USB Adapter on our home PC that worked "OK" but very slow on a Linksys Wireless B 2.4GHz router. I recently upgraded to a Netgear N150 Wireless Router (WNR1000v3). The new router is super fast and works great with my two Dell laptops, but I cannot get the WG111v3 Wireless-G USB Adapter on the home PC to work. The Netgear USB Adapter software control panel shows everything looks great (e.g., "Excellent" signal and connected at 54Mps), but it has a hard time connecting to anything (e.g., Google is only thing that will come up, and very, very slowly). Why such bad performance? What might be wrong? What can I do to fix it? Thanks! - Randy Law - XXX-XXX-XXXX

Network Advisor :

Hello Welcome to Just Answer

Network Advisor :

the problem is that you have slow internet on one laptop and others are working fine

Network Advisor :

and remove all the virus it has and then try again and keep me informed

Customer :

I have the latest version of McAfee, will that work for a virus scan?

Network Advisor :

yes

Customer :

Initiating now...

Network Advisor :

good

Customer :

The "QuickScan" came back negative - no viruses found. I have initiated a full scan which might take a while. Is the quick scan good enough, or should I let the full scan complete before proceding?

Network Advisor :

quick scan is good enough

Network Advisor :

download malware anti bytes from the link i gave you

Customer :

I have no internet connection on that machine (hence this chat). Can I download it onto one of my laptops and copy the file over with a flashdrive? I ask because some downloads are just the "initiation" files that require additional information to be downloaded to work.

Network Advisor :

yes

Network Advisor :

just download it from this pc and copy that file with flash drive

Customer :

I have the following file on a flashdrive for use on the affected PC - is this the right one? - ARO2010_mt.exe

Network Advisor :

no

Network Advisor :

it should be like mbam-setup

Customer :

Looking...

Network Advisor :

just click on the link i gave you an d click on download now

Customer :

What I am about to download is called "Malwarebytes Anti-Malware" - is that right?

Network Advisor :

yes

Network Advisor :

right

Customer :

Got it - transferring to PC and launching..

Network Advisor :

great

Customer :

launched - whats next?

Network Advisor :

quick scan

Customer :

Found 6 objects infected with ~55,000 items scanned so far, still running...

Network Advisor :

let it scan

Customer :

Quickscan complete. 210,731 items scanned, 11 infected. What's next?

Network Advisor :

remove the virus

Network Advisor :

and restart

Customer :

Restart complete.

Network Advisor :

good

Network Advisor :

now try your internet,it would work fast now

Customer :

Still same as before. Google will not even load.

Network Advisor :

when you connect to network, does it show connected

Customer :

The netgear wg111v3 Smart Wizard screen shows everything is working splendidly ("connected to router", 54 Mps, max signal strength) but when I launch IE it says "connecting..." at the top, never connects, then the "cannot display web page" screen appears - dead.

Network Advisor :

click on start->run and type ping www.google.com -t

Network Advisor :

and tell me do you get a reply from there

Customer :

command prompt screen launches, but nothing comes back, screen closes.

Network Advisor :

ping www.google.com -t

Network Advisor :

space between com and -t

Customer :

yes, same result - nothing.

Network Advisor :

click on start->run and type cmd

Network Advisor :

command prompt will open

Customer :

got it

Network Advisor :

type ping www.google.com -t

Customer :

did it. get blinking cursor, then back to nothing.

Network Advisor :

click on start->run and type cmd

command prompt will open

Network Advisor :

and type ipcongfig /all

Network Advisor :

and tell me value of IPV4

Customer :

Actually, got the message "ping request could not find host....'

Customer :

now trying your last suggestion...

Network Advisor :

ok

Customer :

what is IPV4? do not see it in output yet.

Network Advisor :

ip address

Customer :

IP Address is 192.168.1.3

Network Advisor :

it should work then

Network Advisor :

everything is great

Customer :

Agreed, but it does not :-)

Network Advisor :

did you try different browser

Network Advisor :

like firefox ?

Customer :

Do not have any other browser installed

Network Advisor :

download firefox from the above link

Customer :

Is it self contained executable?

Network Advisor :

you will have to download firefox from this link

Customer :

Ok...

Network Advisor :

good

Customer :

Firefox is loaded and launched. Says "Server not found" and cannot load google.

Network Advisor :

click on tools and internet options and then network tab

Network Advisor :

click on settings, there should be no proxy

Customer :

I see Options in Firefox, but no network tab with it.

Network Advisor :

Then click on start->control panel->network connections->right click on wireless connection

Network Advisor :

and see automatically detect settings is set

Customer :

When I right click on wireless connections, the options are disable, view available wireless connections, status, repair, bridge connections, create short cut, rename, and properties.

Customer :

I do not see a check box or anything else resembling ""automatically detect settings"

Customer :

When I click properties and click the wireless network tab, I see an unchecked box that says "use Windows to configure my wireless network settings. Should that be checked?

Network Advisor :

do you see internet protocal(tcp/ip) there

Network Advisor :

on general tab

Network Advisor :

on general tab,you will see internet protocol(TCP/IP)

Network Advisor :

click on that

Network Advisor :

and click properties

Customer :

I have lost track of where I am. I do not see a "general tab"

Network Advisor :

Network Advisor :

check this image

Network Advisor :

click on start->control panel->network connections->right click on wireless connection

Customer :

Got it, and clicked on it...

Network Advisor :

good

Network Advisor :

settings should be automatically detect settings

Customer :

how do I confirm that?

Customer :

When I click properties, obtain IP and DNS server adresses automatically are both checked (i.e., radio buttons)

Network Advisor :

yes

Network Advisor :

come back of it

Customer :

What now?

Network Advisor :

click on

Network Advisor :

in control panel

Network Advisor :

click windows firewall

Network Advisor :

and turn it off

Network Advisor :

on tcp/ip,click on propeerties

Customer :

it is currently off (because I am using MacAffee firewall).

Network Advisor :

yes

Network Advisor :

and check the the box of automatically detect settings

Network Advisor :

turn that off also

Network Advisor :

Mcafee firewall

Network Advisor :

turn off all the anti-virus you have

Customer :

both firewalls off. Hard to turn off antivirus, working on it...

Network Advisor :

right click on the icon in system tray and there will be option of disable

Customer :

antivirus is now off...

Network Advisor :

good

Network Advisor :

restart and try to open websites again

Customer :

Restarting now...

Network Advisor :

Customer :

Customer :

Customer :
