I am trying to create a home network so I can see files on one computer from another computer. I have a Vista 64 bit computer hard wired to the router. I have a dell inspiron laptop wirelessly connect via the router. I cannot get the 2 computers to see each other. The workgroup on both computers is set to WORKGROUP. The name of the wireless network is myhome.
Hello and thank you for using JustAnswer. Is your laptop running Vista also?Is file sharing enabled on both?Have you created any directory shares on either computer yet?Let me know so I can see if we can get this running. Thanks,Lee
Hi Lee, here is the setup:Hp 6300dt running Vista 64 bit hard wired to Linksys router wrt54gl connect to DSL modem. The name is MARGERY-PCLaptop dell inspiron6000 running window XP connects wirelessly to internet via linksys router. The name is inspiron6000.Workgroup on both computers is WORKGROUP.I have tried using the the wizards to establish a home network but neither computer sees the other.Vista computer network sharing settings are all on except for passwork protected sharing. I have 2 connections the local area connection (Customer) and a wireless connection (Myhome). I have network shares called hppublic and public, etc. The vista computer connects to the printer wirelessly as does the laptop. The laptop computer has multiple shared folders. When I try to map a network drive it does not recognize \\MARGERY-PC\WORD. If I use browse to find the network it shows workgroup but this cannot be expanded to see the computers the Vista computer. I have the same problem when trying to map a drive on the Vista computer. It does not know any thing about the inspiron6000.It would seem that some how I would want to connect them throught the linksys, but I am unsure about what setting to change in there. There is a section called "Edit list of PCs" under access restrictions tab but anything I try to put in there gives an error.Hope you can sort this out for me. It is not supposed to be this hard. I had it working when both machines were XP, but I might have had them both hard wired to the router.
I sent a description of the problem 2 days ago and all I get is do you want to keep waiting. Does this mean that no one has an answer?
I only received your details today as you posted late yesterday afternoon. What anti-virus or security software do you have installed on each computer? The router will have nothing to do with network shares. It will be something within the computer configuration or permissions. Thanks,Lee
Negative feedback was not intended. Since alert asks if you want to keep waiting, one might assume that the question is not being worked on if there is no contact. How would I reply to just you?I run AVAST 4.8 free version on the Vista 64 bit computer and my husband runs AVG paid version 8.5 upgrading to 9.0 at this time on the laptop.
I see no new question here to respond to.
Do you have some suggestions as to what I should try at this point?
Hi Lee,Do you have any suggestions on things to try? If not let me know and I will stop waiting.
