I have a new HP computer with windows 7 Professional. I can not get on the internet with a wired connection. I get ERROR 651. I use Comcast for my internet.Hayden.
That sounds like a dialup error. Is there a box popping up when you open your browser that wants to dial?
No, the wizard says the ethernet cable is not connected, but it is.
So when you open up Internet Explorer is the wizard popping up?
Yes, a dial-up connection box appears. I click connect, it tries to connect, but the message says "connecting through WAN Miniport (PPPOE0 Error 651 The modem has reported a error"
Okay good. That's easy to fix. Just cancel the dialup box when it comes up. Then go to the Tools menu at the top of the browser. If you don't see it, press the Alt key on the keyboard and it will show up. Select Internet Options at the bottom of that menu. Then go to the Connections tab. Around the middle of that window, select Never dial a connection. Then press OK, close the browser then open it again and you should be able to get online. If not, let me know.
Sorry, I tried your procedure, but no luck. Same error 651 again.
And the dialup window still comes up?
on the internet page, says the web page can't be displayed.
What you can try:
Then a "Diagnose Connection Problems" box comes up. When I check it, the error 651 message comes up again.
I see. And this computer is connected to your router with a network cable? But you said the computer is showing the network cable is disconnected?
Yes, that's it. I just read on another web site that the error 651 message is a glitch in the windows 7 software, but I can't confirm that on the microsoft site?? Can you?
For a PPPoE connection that may be the case, but you are not using a PPPoE or dialup connection so this should not be an issue for you. Your computer may be trying to use a connection like that because it doesn't think the network cable is connected.
I'm assuming you have a router which you are currently connected to with a different computer so you can communicate with me. Can you look on the router and see if the link light corresponding to the port where you have the other computer connected is lit up?
On the new hp computer there is no lite ( I mean no lite next to the connection)? I am connected to a RJ-45 Network jack.
What does that network jack connect to?
The comcast cable from wall --- to comcast modem --- to JR-45 Jack.
Hmm.. I'm not quite sure I understand. How is the computer you are currently using connected to Comcast?
Same set up. I simple unplug the cable from this computer & plug it into the new computer. once the new computer is up to speed than this one will be retired.
Oh, so you're swapping the network cable between the two computers to test the connection on the new computer?
Right.
Okay, that may be the problem. Here's what you need to do to test it. Unplug the power to the Comcast modem for at least 10 minutes. While it's off, swap the network cable over to your new computer. Then after 10 minutes, turn the Comcast modem back on. You should be able to get online after that. With Comcast, you can't just swap the cable back and forth like that. You have to shut off their modem for about 10 minutes in between switching computers.
OK, I will try that tomorrow when I have more time. I will hit the reply button for this reply & then hit the accept button to pay you the $18 for your time. I hope it works. Thanks again.
