HI,

First thing, DONT PANIC!

There is nothing to be afraid of as computers are a lot more simple than most people think.

What type of DSL modem did you get from ATT?

Do you have a router of any kind?

What operating sytem do you use?

What make and model is your machine?

Let us know

Thanks

Customer replied 1785 days and 19 hours ago.

DSL Modem: Speedstream 5100
Router: I have a Linksys but it is not connected now because the other PC crashed. So I took it off.
Operating System: XP Median Center Edition
                   Version 2002
                   Service Pack 2
Make and Model of Laptop: HP Pavilion dv2120us

Ok,

What model is your Linksys unit and is it a wireless router?

Thanks

Customer replied 1785 days and 19 hours ago.

One is WRT54G and the other is WUSB54G

Ok,

The WRT54G should be more than capable of doing what you need.

Can yuo plug your computer directly into the DSLModem and make sure you can get on the internet, If you can then unplug your machine and plug the cord fromt he DSL Modem into the WAN or internet port of the router.

Take your macine and hard connect it to one of the LAN or network ports on the Router and then see if your machine can get on the internet.

Let me know what happens so we can setup your wireless.

Thanks

You have lost me. If I plug the laptop into the router I unplug you. And for the rest of what you said I haven't the foggiest.

Ok,

So you can connect if you are hardwired into the DSL Modem but not if you connect through the Router, Is that correct?

If so could you look on the back of the LInksys unit and see if you can find the recessed reset button, If so plug it into the power wait about 1 minute then press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds.

Once you have done that wait about 2 minutes and unplug the wire from your laptop and plug it into the WAN or Internet port on your Linksys box and wait about 2 minutes.

Then plug your laptop into one of the other 4 ports on the Linksys box and see if you can get online after about 30 seconds.

If not just reconnect the DSL modem to your laptop and let me know what happened.

Thanks

Customer replied 1785 days and 19 hours ago.

Sorry this is not going to work because I don't understand WAN,hardwired into the bah bah bah

Ok

I am going to assume yuo currently have your laptop connected to the DSL modem using a cable, If so this is hardwired.

Then on the back of the linksys WRT54G you should see four ports together which are the LAN ports and a single port by itself which is the WAN port.

So take the wire that is connected to your laptop and unplug it from your laptop and plug it into the single port on the Linksys unit

Then take another cable and plug from your laptop to one of the four ports on the router and see if you an get online.

Thanks
