Hi again- NOW the "The type of the file system is NTFS" above the command prompt. Is that of any consequence?

If you type in as I believe now it is S Drive
chkdsk s: /r
What now happens?

It has crashed, sorry but no matter the software issue, this would run.

Do you think that not using the "safely remove hardware" could have crashed the thumb?

No, that would just possibly allow you to lose data, but it would still be accessible.
