dropped my maxtor 3200 on carpet floor. When hooked up to my windows xp computer it states that the usb port is overpowered. Is there any way to get the back ups off this drive.
Already Tried: let the unit sit overnight without any power to it.
Hello,Welcome to JustAnswer. My name isXXXXX and I will be assisting you with your problem today. You have 3 possibilities in this case:(1) The USB interface board (what goes between your computer and the drive) is defective(2) The hard drive itself is dead and/or corrupted(3) The USB cable is badBased on your description, I would guess it's either 1 or 2.The only way to confirm is to take the hard drive out of the enclosure and install it in another enclosure or in a computer and see if you can retrieve your data. If you can, then the drive is good and the enclosure itself is bad. If you cannot then the drive itself is bad.A good way to do this is to take the drive to a local technician. Geek Squad (Best Buy) for example will test the drive for you to tell you if it's bad and give you some options i.e. replacing the enclosure or retrieving the data from the drive. Thanks and please rate my answer once you are satisfied. If you have any further questions, please ask and I will continue working with you. Thanks,Robert Preston
