Customer Question

I am thinking about buying a new PC. Naturally, I want to get the most for my money. I don't use my PC for anything other than general tasks. I listen to music and I want the best sound system, play a lot of poker and a few other games, email, research, basic accounting and load and store photos. I am not interested in web cams or any type of communications other than email and infrequent IM.

I know that all the extra add on stuff will be preinstalled with trial versions. I can use pcdecrapifier.com to get rid of most of it. I have not had good luck with Norton. I am now using Windows Essentials. It seems OK. Anything better? Are the subscription antivirus programs ever worth paying for?

My present PC is HP a6530f. Works well but has an unsolveable sound issue. Been through 3 experts without success. If I could solve the sound issue wthout spending any more money I would be satisfied with my present PC.

Steve Herrod :

Hi, I'll be happy to help you with some advice

Steve Herrod :

and also happy to look at what the sound issue could be on the HP machine as well

Steve Herrod :

thank you for the detailed description - in terms of your requirements it sounds like the audio is the most important part of the system to get right - are you looking for pure audio quality rather than surround sound systems for example?

Steve Herrod :

to answer the question on subscription anti-virus applications I think that they are not really worth paying for in addition to the load or bloat they can add to a system

Steve Herrod :

using Windows Essentials and combining this with regular Malware scans (using Malware Bytes Free edition for example) is a good way of keeping things secure and also minimal

Customer :

Thanks for the opinion on antivirus. Surround sound is really not an option. I just want great sound from desk top speakers. If you can help get rid of my sound issue I would be gratefull.

Steve Herrod :

You're welcome - so we want great audio quality from desktop speakers. What is the current sound issue you have?

Customer :

I have a persistent, some times frequent and sometimes occasional "machine gun "stuttering sound when using any audio. Can you access my previous conversations with other experts?

Steve Herrod :

Interesting....

Steve Herrod :

let me check

Steve Herrod :

it looks like this is the issue and the experts communication?

Steve Herrod :

http://www.justanswer.com/computer-hardware/65mvu-having-few-probs-pc-hp-a6530f-vista-sp-2.html

Steve Herrod :

If so, I will go through all that and work out what the issue may be

Steve Herrod :

is it ok to come back to you later today?

Steve Herrod :

I can also provide some details on a good, value for money replacement specification

Customer :

Yes. Please see if you can solve my sound problem and explain in terms that I can understand. If you can help, I would consider reformatting....Then, a new PC would not be necessary.Later, EddieB

Steve Herrod :

Thanks Eddie, will send an update through later

Steve Herrod :

Hi Eddie - just wanted to check a couple of things quickly that I couldn't see in the previous thread

Steve Herrod :

how close are the speakers to any potential interference source

Steve Herrod :

such as a wireless router etc?

Steve Herrod :

also - can the PC Speaker Beep be muted to rule that out as a potential cause

Steve Herrod :

if you right-click the Volume icon and choose Playback Devices

Steve Herrod :

Select Speakers-->Properties-->Levels

Steve Herrod :

and drag PC Beep to 0

Steve Herrod :

Still looking into the issue more but just a quick couple of thoughts

Customer :

I have a cable box and a Roku. Had the problem b4 Roku. I will try 0 beep. I have checked earphone connect to PC. Still happens there.

Steve Herrod :

ok - let me know

Steve Herrod :

still got plenty of info to research so will come back to you later

Customer :

I've had internet radio on with sound off. Must not be interference. Didn't think so. I know the louder the sound turned on the louder the machine gun stutter sound. Please keep trying.

Steve Herrod :

no problem - thanks for the update, is a bizarre and curious issue!

Steve Herrod :

will keep trying

Steve Herrod :

just a quick audio question - was Vista always on this PC or has it run any other operating systems? Just wondering if the issue was present on a different operating system at all.

Steve Herrod :

The audio chipset that the HP machine uses does seem to have caused similar issues with a lot of machines ever since the Windows Audio engine got recoded with Vista/7

Steve Herrod :

also - did you have any type of budget in mind for a new machine

Customer :

I bought this from HP online. Vista was already installed.

Customer :

My budget depends on getting the best for the money. I would not be afraid to spend $600 to $700 if necessary. I would prefer not to spend more than $500.

Steve Herrod :

thanks - I don't want to recommend anything excessive but good to know

Steve Herrod :

would you need new screen etc or just the tower unit replacing in that event?

Customer :

monitor is good. I am ready for a new keyboard. Mouse works fine. I could probably use an upgrade on speakers. I am using Creative now, working OK

Steve Herrod :

ok that's good

Steve Herrod :

pretty sure under $500 would be ok

Customer :

Probably get one from BestBuy, without service contact!!. I have learned my lesson.

Steve Herrod :

yes I know what you mean

Steve Herrod :

on your current machine, can you go to Device Manager?

Steve Herrod :

Start, right-click Computer and choose Manage

Steve Herrod :

when that loads up choose Device Manager and expand Sound, Video & Game Controllers

Steve Herrod :

right-click on the Realtek Audio, choose Properties and then select the Driver tab and let me know the version number

Steve Herrod :

couldn't find it in the previous chat unfortunately

Customer :

6.0.1.5910

Steve Herrod :

thanks

Steve Herrod :

are the creative speakers you are using at the moment just Left - Right speakers or are they a surround sound model?

Customer :

R and L

Steve Herrod :

ok thanks - have a few possible resolutions based on that chipset and some issues

Steve Herrod :

going to put them all together as I go through them over next hour or so

Customer :

ty

Steve Herrod :

np

Steve Herrod :

ok - been looking at a lot of chipset information and trying out a few things

Steve Herrod :

when convenient can you see if these options make a difference at all?

Steve Herrod :

Open Mail and choose Show Message Sizes from the View menu

Steve Herrod :

sorry - ignore that

Steve Herrod :

Under Control Panel > Sound > Playback Devices > Properties on Speakers > Enhancements
Turn on 'Immediate Mode'
Control Panel > Sound > Playback Devices > Advanced
Set quality from 16/bits 44khz to 24 bits 48 khz
Change Power options on the PC to High Performance

Steve Herrod :

that's the right one

Steve Herrod :

also, do you have Realtek Audio Manager listed as a program on your system?

Steve Herrod :

if so, that should allow us to reprogramme the outputs

Steve Herrod :

so for example we could change the audio input (blue connection) to be audio output and then connect the speakers to that connection

Steve Herrod :

and see if the sound is still present or not

Steve Herrod :

let me know if that made sense

Steve Herrod :

Also have been researching a potential replacement PC

Steve Herrod :

I agree that perusing Best Buy would be a very good option and they have some very good machines available

Steve Herrod :

something like this would be a very nice machine and suit the requirements

Steve Herrod :

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Lenovo+-+Desktop+-+6GB+Memory+-+500GB+Hard+Drive/4789749.p?id=1218527813607&skuId=4789749

Steve Herrod :

or a similar HP

Steve Herrod :

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/HP+-+Pavilion+Desktop+-+8GB+Memory+-+1TB+Hard+Drive/4672416.p?id=1218525518716&skuId=4672416

Steve Herrod :

will be offline for a few hours

Steve Herrod :

let me know your thoughts and if any progress on the existing sound issue

Customer :

Turned on immediate mode...quality was already on 24/4800. I found a realtek HD audio manager.

Customer :

I will get back to you in the morning..

Steve Herrod :

No problem - let me know how it goes

Customer :

Good Morning Steve, Been listening to internet radio and heard the sound after about 20 min.

Customer :

Is Lenovo a common PC brand? No customer reviews. HP looks good. Has good reviews. Much difference between my HPw2007 monitor and a newer model?

Steve Herrod :

Thanks - will work on the audio issue some more

Steve Herrod :

Lenovo is what IBM are now called

Steve Herrod :

they are good, solid machines

Steve Herrod :

The HP does look a good system

Steve Herrod :

I don't think you would see much improvement on a newer monitor to be honest

Customer :

thank you

Steve Herrod :

no problem, working through some more audio options now and will come back to you

Steve Herrod :

Something else to try on the audio option - Control Panel --> All Control Panel Items --> Power Options
Select "Change Plan Settings" on the power plan you are using will take you to

Control Panel --> All Control Panel Items --> Power Options --> Edit Plan Settings
Select "Change advanced power settings" which will bring up a Power Options settings box

Expand "Processor power Management"
Expand "Minimum Processor state"
Set to "100%"

Steve Herrod :

forgot to ask as well whether the Realtek Audio Manager was able to change inputs and outputs so that if the speakers were connected to a different port if that made any difference as well?

Customer :

processor state already 100% can't find input/output connections

Steve Herrod :

ok, let me see if I can find a guide on the Realtek Audio Manager

Steve Herrod :

This should be the guide

Steve Herrod :

p.11 mentions the option to use different jacks and change them to playback functions

Steve Herrod :

http://support.ts.fujitsu.com/ukfaq/Boards/Soundcards/RealTekHDA/hd_audio_driver_usermanualver1-00_0418-05[1].pdf

Steve Herrod :

Let me know if that works at all

Customer :

I appreciate all your effort to help me with my PC audio problem. I think it's time to make that trip to BestBuy. This input/output stuff exceeds my level of techno-competence. Is there a better speaker set up that I should consider? The HP a7-1254 looks like the one I'll look at first.

Customer :

Is there any chance of exporting my audio problem along with other data from my present PC?

Customer :

My reason for considering the a7-1254 is the fact that I can't find any reviews on the Lenovo.

Steve Herrod :

Understood - is strange that no reviews on the Lenovo but the HP is a good spec

Steve Herrod :

for speakers & audio quality I would look at a good 2.1 speaker setup

Steve Herrod :

which is a Left/Right speaker set with a bass unit as well to provide better response

Steve Herrod :

Something like the Corsair SP2200 gets good reviews and is very well priced

Steve Herrod :

http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/2011/05/27/corsair-sp2200-review/1

Steve Herrod :

there are a couple of options when it comes to exporting data

Steve Herrod :

either manually copying documents etc

Steve Herrod :

or we could create a virtual image of your existing machine which would also capture the audio data

Steve Herrod :

and then this could be started up as and when required on your new PC

Steve Herrod :

that would also be a good way of ensuring all settings are captured for easy reference on the new setup as well

Steve Herrod :

VMWare offer a free converter and player for such a task (I've used it when consolidating servers several times)

Steve Herrod :

http://www.howtoforge.com/vmware_converter_windows_linux

Steve Herrod :

Let me know your thoughts

Steve Herrod :

Cheers

Steve Herrod :

Steve

Customer :

I went to BestBuy yesterday and checked out the HP p7-1254. It sure looks good.

Customer :

Can we try 1 last effort to repair my my PC? Is it possible to reformat and setup Windows 7 without any thing else, to see if the problem is in the settings or other software?

Steve Herrod :

it would be possible to do a repair install of Windows 7

Steve Herrod :

this is the closest method possible to reinstalling Windows 7 which doesn't affect the other applications/documents etc

Steve Herrod :

unless you want to do a reinstall from scratch and see if that resolves the audio issue?

Customer :

I want to use the whatever gives us the best chance of success. Whatever it takes to determine whether the problem is hardware, software or settings. What about just going back to factory restore? If it is hardware maybe we can replace the bad component.

Steve Herrod :

yes - we can do that, would need to ensure everything is backed up in advance though

Steve Herrod :

I can put some details together as to where documents/emails etc are stored so we can do this?

Customer :

Whatever it takes to make it right. Will that will be the definitive ultimate measure? I just want to be through with my PC issues!!

Customer :

Without spending $500

Customer :

If possible

Steve Herrod :

yes, that would be the definitive step to checking the issue

Customer :

Let's getter done so we can settle up.

Steve Herrod :

ok - what e-mail program do you use?

Customer :

outlook

Customer :

and inbox.com

Steve Herrod :

Ok, I'll work out the best way to do a complete backup and come back to you shortly with the details, is that ok?

Customer :

That's fine

Steve Herrod :

thanks

Customer :

I have an appointment this morning but I'll be back by 10:00

Customer :

I have carbonite if that helps any

Steve Herrod :

yes - Carbonite is good

Steve Herrod :

just want to make sure we have a local copy as well

Steve Herrod :

ok - what time is it there now?

Customer :

0730. Where r u?

Steve Herrod :

UK at present

Steve Herrod :

ok, that's fine

Steve Herrod :

will put someting together ready for when you get back

Customer :

ok TY

Steve Herrod :

np

Steve Herrod :

the areas to backup will largely be the following locations

Steve Herrod :

Outlook Data Files

Steve Herrod :

and Windows user files

Steve Herrod :

Outlook Data Files should be included in the Windows User files location but is always best to double check

Steve Herrod :

if you load up Outlook and go to File-->Account Settings-->Data Files

Steve Herrod :

Select your mail account name and then choose 'Open File Location'

Steve Herrod :

this will take you directly to the location where the files are located to allow you to take a copy of them

Steve Herrod :

The other location we need to look at is on the system drive, usually called Drive C

Steve Herrod :

if you go to Start-->Computer and then open up drive C

Steve Herrod :

there should be a users folder

Steve Herrod :

and under that should be a folder with your Username

Steve Herrod :

if you copy the Username folder this should include Documents, Downloads, Favorites, Pictures & Videos which should be everything we need to backup

Steve Herrod :

if you are happy that all your Documents are stored here that should then be everything we need backed up

Steve Herrod :

We can do a final check of document locations etc before committing to the rebuild as well

Customer :

Finally made it back home. I have the Username file. Where should I put it and how should I copy it.

Customer :

I told you email was Outlook, that is incorrect. It is actually Windows mail

Customer :

It doesn't have Account Settings on file tab. Sorry

Steve Herrod :

no problem

Steve Herrod :

do you have a USB drive at all?

Customer :

Don't understand.Got a USB port.

Steve Herrod :

ok, we'll need some mechanism to backup the files before we do the reinstallation

Steve Herrod :

so usually, would be a USB hard drive (or memory stick)

Steve Herrod :

failing that we might have to burn to CD/DVD?

Customer :

ahh..now I understand. Probably go to Walmart and get one

Customer :

I have blank cd

Customer :

won't it take several?

Steve Herrod :

they're useful things to have - may depend on how much space it would take up

Steve Herrod :

if you right click your username folder and choose properties the size should be listed there

Customer :

4.33 GB

Customer :

memory stick = flash drive?

Steve Herrod :

yes, flash drive

Steve Herrod :

ok 4.33GB

Steve Herrod :

would just fit on a blank DVD if is has a DVD burner?

Customer :

Have cd burner. Let me make sure I have blank cd..brb

Steve Herrod :

no problem

Steve Herrod :

rough calculation that will take 6 or 7 CDs

Customer :

I have blank dvd+R. and burner. never used it

Steve Herrod :

ok - that should be a good option

Steve Herrod :

is the burner connected?

Customer :

I believe so

Steve Herrod :

ok - so if you put the blank DVD in the burner

Steve Herrod :

Windows should automatically detect it and give some options

Customer :

Dindn't detect. I opene d windows DVD maker found options

Steve Herrod :

ok, what options are available?

Customer :

Choose play back setting

Customer :

aspect ratio

Customer :

format ntcc....pal

Customer :

speed

Customer :

temo file location

Customer :

temp

Steve Herrod :

ah ok - sorry think that's my fault

Steve Herrod :

one second

Steve Herrod :

if you close Windows DVD Maker

Steve Herrod :

and go to Start-->Computer

Steve Herrod :

double click on the DVD burner

Steve Herrod :

this should open up a blank disc

Customer :

I see window says disc title :todays date

Customer :

format options

Steve Herrod :

ok, what is available with format options?

Customer :

I have a window that says ..drag files to this folder to add them to the disc

Steve Herrod :

ok - that is what we want

Steve Herrod :

so if you open the username folder in a seperate windo

Steve Herrod :

window

Steve Herrod :

highlight the username and press Ctrl + C (which will copy it)

Steve Herrod :

and then in the DVD window press Ctrl + V

Steve Herrod :

a copy of the folder should appear on the DVD

Customer :

must be doing something wrong ..can't make that work

Steve Herrod :

ok, how many blank dvds do you have?

Steve Herrod :

just want to be sure that if we mess one up we have another one to use

Steve Herrod :

back in a couple of mins...

Customer :

Now I have a window 'files currently on the disk (13)

Customer :

several

Customer :

blank dvd

Steve Herrod :

ok

Steve Herrod :

what files are now on the disk?

Customer :

HP internet shortcuts...accesories, HP home,pc discovery, soft war and driver dowload

Steve Herrod :

hmmm ok

Steve Herrod :

are you able to remove those?

Customer :

no

Customer :

u said

2:44 PM

so if you open the username folder in a seperate windo

2:44 PM

window

2:44 PM

highlight the username and press Ctrl + C (which will copy it)

2:44 PM

and then in the DVD window press Ctrl + V

2:44 PM

a copy of the folder should appear on the

Customer :

I don't understand highlight user name

Customer :

.

Steve Herrod :

ok

Steve Herrod :

if you go to the Start menu and choose Computer

Steve Herrod :

then open the C drive

Customer :

What are you reffering to?

Steve Herrod :

it's the username folder on the system, apologies I think I'm explaining it badly

Steve Herrod :

if you go to Start

Steve Herrod :

and type c:\users in the search box

Steve Herrod :

then press enter

Customer :

not as badly as I am understanding. you doin ok

Steve Herrod :

that should display some folders?

Steve Herrod :

thanks :) you're very forgiving!

Customer :

OK I have the users file open

Steve Herrod :

ok, so in the users file

Steve Herrod :

there should be a separate folder with your actual username on?

Customer :

yes I c it

Steve Herrod :

ok - that is the folder we need to copy to a DVD

Steve Herrod :

just looking to see if there is a quick Microsoft video....

Steve Herrod :

this has a good video showing the process actually

Steve Herrod :

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0BwF60m05m8

Customer :

Giving up on dvd burning.I'm going to WalMart to buy a flash drive..

Steve Herrod :

ah ok - no problem

Steve Herrod :

so when you have the flash drive this should be the next step

Steve Herrod :

select your username folder (the one under c:\users)

Steve Herrod :

right-click it and choose Copy

Steve Herrod :

open up the flash drive in Start-->Computer

Steve Herrod :

then right-click and choose Paste

Steve Herrod :

this should give you a copy of the username folder on the flash drive

Steve Herrod :

if you open it up you can check that the folders etc have copied

Steve Herrod :

(you should see Download, Documents, music etc all there)

Steve Herrod :

that would just leave Windows Mail to backup....

Steve Herrod :

If you go to File-->Export in Windows Mail

Steve Herrod :

you can then choose Windows Contacts

Steve Herrod :

which will let you export the Contacts

Steve Herrod :

and then repeat the procedure but choose File-->Export-->Messages

Steve Herrod :

Back them up in Windows Mail format

Steve Herrod :

details & screenshots are here as well

Steve Herrod :

http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/4905/backup-windows-mail-messages-and-contacts-in-vista/

Steve Herrod :

Once all that is done we should have a backup of your mails, and the User folder which has your documents etc in

Steve Herrod :

If you can double check the documents on the USB drive and are happy they are saved

Steve Herrod :

the next step would be to check you have all the discs for any programs you need to reinstall

Steve Herrod :

if so, would be rebooting with the Windows DVD in the drive and choosing the Install Now option when it boots up

Steve Herrod :

it's Windows Vista isn't it?

Steve Herrod :

once you start the reinstall we'll lose the ability to chat I guess

Steve Herrod :

one thing I wanted to check was whether you had the drivers disc for the HP machine?

Customer :

Same probs I had with the dvd. When I try to copy and start to download Window opens that says "the action cannot be completed bcause the file is open in another program. Close the file and try again"

Steve Herrod :

ok, it's possible that it's trying to copy some of the hidden and system files that are in that location

Steve Herrod :

the easiest solution will be to create a new user

Steve Herrod :

login to the machine as that user

Steve Herrod :

and then copy your user file to the usb disc

Steve Herrod :

as nothing can possibly be in use then

Steve Herrod :

so if you go to Start-->Control Panel-->User Accounts

Steve Herrod :

you can create a new user account there

Steve Herrod :

then logoff from your current user

Steve Herrod :

and login to the new user account

Steve Herrod :

go to c:\users in the new account

Steve Herrod :

and then copy your username folder to the usb disc

Steve Herrod :

if that doesn't work, I'll write a custom script to do the copying

Steve Herrod :

Let me know if the user account works

Steve Herrod :

will be offline for a couple of hours as have to drop by the office

Customer :

I set up a new user acct. I think that I have copied my user name file to flash drive. How can I be sure that it copied correctly?

Steve Herrod :

Hi,

Steve Herrod :

if you have the flash drive connected

Steve Herrod :

go to Start-->Computer

Steve Herrod :

and open up the flash drive

Steve Herrod :

what folders are listed on the flash drive?

Customer :

Good Morning Steve,

Customer :

club application, ED, Ed copy, Louie, san disc secure access, run club san disc, RunSanDiscSecureAcce

Steve Herrod :

Ok, and is the user folder called Ed?

Customer :

When I go c:\user thisis what folders i c

Customer :

AppData

Customer :

Ed

Customer :

Louie

Customer :

postgres

Customer :

Public

Steve Herrod :

Ok - Ed and Louie sound like usernames

Steve Herrod :

so those folders have been copied to the flash drive

Steve Herrod :

if you open them up on the flash drive, do you see Documents folders etc?

Customer :

I see club application, ED, Ed copy, Louie, san disc secure access, run club san disc, RunSanDiscSecureAcce

Steve Herrod :

ok, and if you double click on Ed

Steve Herrod :

what does that then show you?

Customer :

desktop

Customer :

documents

Customer :

downloads favorites

Customer :

links music pics

Steve Herrod :

ok

Steve Herrod :

so that sounds like it has copied things correctly

Customer :

searches

Steve Herrod :

if you went into Documents does it show the document files you are used to?

Customer :

videos

Customer :

looks like my documents file

Steve Herrod :

ok good

Steve Herrod :

were you able to backup the Windows Mail messages/contacts ok?

Customer :

where should I look?

Steve Herrod :

they would most likely be on the desktop I would imagine

Steve Herrod :

if there's nothing obvious we can redo the exports

Customer :

under program files i c my all programs list

Customer :

or most of it

Steve Herrod :

ok, let's do a new export of Windows Mail and make sure we have a copy on the flash drive

Steve Herrod :

is Windows Mail loaded?

Customer :

When I double click ED I get

Customer :

mjsync auto runs

Customer :

eula

Customer :

When I double click Louie I get

desktop

6:48 AM

documents

Customer :

all are empty

Steve Herrod :

ok, thanks

Steve Herrod :

what capacity is the flash drive you picked up?

Customer :

if I go to Louie double click documents i get my document list

Customer :

Have to go thru louie>links>documents> I get my document list

Customer :
DISREGARD THIS 7:15 AM

if I go to Louie double click documents i get my document list

Steve Herrod :

ok, that doesn't sound quite right

Steve Herrod :

sorry - just want to be certain we have a copy of all your data before we reinstall

Customer :

Have to go thru louie>links>documents> I get my document list

Steve Herrod :

just to clarify Ed & Louie both use the machine?

Customer :

Louie is the other user I created

Steve Herrod :

ah ok

Steve Herrod :

right - so I'm 100% Sure

Steve Herrod :

Ed is the main user

Steve Herrod :

all documents etc

Steve Herrod :

Louie is the test user we created to take a copy of Ed's folder?

Customer :

correct

Customer :

yes

Steve Herrod :

ok - so Louie actually has 'no' data of his own

Customer :

under louie there are no downloads or documents but there are links

Steve Herrod :

yes, that makes sense if Louie is the test user we created, as he won't have done any work

Customer :

when i go to links under louie then documents I get my document list

Steve Herrod :

yes, crazily that is how it would work

Steve Herrod :

so the main thing we need to concentrate is the Ed folder on the flash drive

Customer :

hard for me to explain

Steve Herrod :

that's ok - I think I'm there

Steve Herrod :

Ed is the account you always login with and work from?

Customer :

yes..I have only had ED untill I created louie

Steve Herrod :

thank you - it's clear in my head now

Steve Herrod :

so, on the flash drive, when you open up the Ed folder you have Desktop, Document, Downloads, Favourites, Links, Music, Pictures, Searches, Videos

Customer :

no

Customer :

I have

Customer :

mjsync auto runs

7:03 AM

eula

7:08 AM

When I double click Louie I get

desktop

6:48 AM

documents

Steve Herrod :

thanks

Steve Herrod :

ok, for some reason Ed hasn't copied quite right

Steve Herrod :

let's try this way

Steve Herrod :

if you go to the Start menu

Steve Herrod :

and type transfer in the Search box

Steve Herrod :

does an application called Windows Easy Transfer load up?

Customer :

yes

Steve Herrod :

ok

Steve Herrod :

if you are in Windows Easy Transfer this may do a backup for us

Steve Herrod :

do you have 'Start a new transfer'?

Customer :

no

Customer :

i have u

Customer :

user acct

Customer :

folder/file

Customer :

program sett

Customer :

internet sett

Customer :

e mail

Customer :

all under you can transfer:

Steve Herrod :

can you hit next there?

Customer :

yes

Steve Herrod :

ok

Customer :

iget close all programs

Steve Herrod :

then it should ask where to transfer files to

Steve Herrod :

ok

Steve Herrod :

are you able to go past that without closing all programs?

Customer :

no

Customer :

says just answer

Customer :

email

Customer :

the only program i have open

Steve Herrod :

ok, we'll need to try closing those down and stepping through Easy Transfer

Steve Herrod :

just putting the instructions together

Customer :

ok ty

Steve Herrod :

so, once all other applications have closed continue with Easy Transfer

Steve Herrod :

you should get a prompt to choose 'What do you want to use to transfer items to new computer'

Steve Herrod :

the last option should be 'external hard disk or usb flash drive'

Steve Herrod :

select that and you should get a screen which says

Steve Herrod :

'which computer are you using now'

Steve Herrod :

choose 'this is my old computer'

Steve Herrod :

it should then scan the user accounts

Steve Herrod :

might take several minutes here

Steve Herrod :

once finished

Steve Herrod :

you can choose Customize on Ed

Steve Herrod :

and verify what it will backup

Steve Herrod :

then with the checkbox next to Ed ticked

Steve Herrod :

choose Next

Steve Herrod :

you can add a password XX you want to the backup

Steve Herrod :

but easiest thing is to leave a blank password

Steve Herrod :

and choose Save

Customer :

are the instructions complete? I will print instructions and close ..Get back to you in an hour or so...TY Steve

Steve Herrod :

no problem

Steve Herrod :

let me know how it goes

Customer :

I have followed directions and removed the scan disc

Customer :

andclosed out allprograms

Customer :

inserted the scan disc

Customer :

chose open

Customer :

the same stuff came up

Customer :

club app,ED,Edcopy,Louie, etc..

Customer :

so I didn't select any of those and I went to ED on the left side under folders and from there I can open contacts, desktop, documents, downloads, favs, links, music, pics searches

Customer :

did I finally get it right?

Steve Herrod : That is sounding good. Just to confirm that the folder list on the left hand side has the disc listed and then underneath is Ed and then underneath that is the folders you just listed.
Customer :

not exactly..under folders is desktop, ED, public computer

Customer :

hp ,factory image

Customer :

if i click ED i get

Customer :

contacts,desktop,documents,downloads, favs,links,music, pics searches

Steve Herrod : Ah ok, that link is relating to the ED folder on the machine itself then
Steve Herrod : Did you have any luck running the easy transfer utility?
Customer :

yes not the Removabl disc(j) that is the flash drive

Customer :

The easy trans seemed to work properly

Steve Herrod : Ok, so when you open up the flash drive are any other files/folders visible now that were not before?
Customer :

no

Customer :

the same stuff as b4

Customer :

club app,ED,Edcopy,Louie, etc.. comes up

Customer :

the necessary data does not come up

Customer :

when i click on scan disc in computr

Customer :

i have to go to ED on the left side under folders

Customer :

I am going to shut down for a while prob about 2 hours and start the easy transfer process again. I'll tell you the results when I come back

Steve Herrod :

ok - thanks

Steve Herrod :

in the meantime, I'll make a custom script that we can use to copy the data as well

Steve Herrod :

just want to be absolutely sure that we don't risk your data

Steve Herrod :

Almost have the script ready - just wanted to check what drive letter has been assigned to the flash drive

Steve Herrod :

can you let me know what is shown next to the flash drive when it is connected

Steve Herrod :

does it say E: Removable Disk or F: Removable Disk for example?

Customer :

It is (j)

Steve Herrod :

thanks - will make sure my script uses J

Customer :

Sorry I have been away so long. I didn't know whether I had loaded up my new flash drive so I did a format on the flash drive. Took a very long time

Steve Herrod :

no problem

Steve Herrod :

should have the script ready in 5-10 mins

Steve Herrod :

ok - the script file is here

Steve Herrod :

copy.cmd

Steve Herrod :

if you click that it should download to your machine

Customer :

I can't click that link

Steve Herrod :

ok - if you go to wikisend.com and choose Download

Steve Herrod :

it will prompt you for a File ID

Steve Herrod :

use this 594236

Steve Herrod :

and that should download the file

Customer :

did that..got the run/save clicked run ..nothing happened

Steve Herrod :

ok, can you repeat and save it to your desktop?

Customer :

2012/05/10 15:04:22 ERROR 123 (0x0000007B) Accessing Source Directory C:\Users\ED\Desktop\“C:\Users\Ed”\
The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect.

Customer :

got this from desktop shortcut

Steve Herrod :

ok, that is strange

Steve Herrod :

just checking the command

Steve Herrod :

ok, can you go to Start and type CMD in the search box

Steve Herrod :

this should load up the Command Prompt window

Customer :

ok got it

Steve Herrod :

ok

Steve Herrod :

does it currently show c:\users\ed?

Customer :

yes

Steve Herrod :

ok

Steve Herrod :

now type this command

Steve Herrod :

robocopy c:\users\ed j:\backup /MIR

Steve Herrod :

and press enter

Customer :

system can't find path

Steve Herrod :

ok

Steve Herrod :

try j:

Steve Herrod :

and press enter

Steve Herrod :

does the prompt change?

Customer :

not recognized internal external command

Steve Herrod :

ok, if you leave the command prompt window open for now

Steve Herrod :

and go to Start-->Computer

Steve Herrod :

the flash drive is definitely being given the letter J?

Customer :

without the stick inserted there is no lettre j..when i insert stick

Customer :

NUMBER 1(j) shows

Steve Herrod :

ah ok, put the stick in and double check it comes up as J again

Steve Herrod :

great

Steve Herrod :

can you go back to the Command Prompt window now

Steve Herrod :

and once there type j:

Steve Herrod :

and press enter again

Steve Herrod :

hopefully the prompt would change now

Customer :

j:\<

Steve Herrod :

ok good

Customer :

>

Steve Herrod :

now type c:

Steve Herrod :

and press enter

Steve Herrod :

it should change back to c:

Customer :

c:Users\ED

Steve Herrod :

ok - that's fine

Steve Herrod :

now - let's try this command

Customer :

system cannot find the path specified

Steve Herrod :

sorry, meant this command I'm just about to add

Steve Herrod :

Robocopy C:\Users\Ed J:\TheBackup /MIR /XA:SH /XD AppData /XJD

Customer :

loading files

Steve Herrod :

ok - might take a while but this should now be backing up from the Ed folder to the J:\Backup folder

Customer :

ok still loading

Steve Herrod :

no problem

Customer :

all through back to C :\Users\Ed

Steve Herrod :

ok

Steve Herrod :

now type J:

Steve Herrod :

and the prompt should change

Steve Herrod :

then type \Mybackup

Steve Herrod :

sorry - ignore that last bit

Steve Herrod :

when you have the j:> prompt

Steve Herrod :

type cd \mybackup

Steve Herrod :

and press enter

Customer :

can't find path specified

Steve Herrod :

ah - sorry my fault

Steve Herrod :

try cd \thebackup

Customer :

now J \thebackup>

Steve Herrod :

ok - that looks good

Steve Herrod :

now type dir

Steve Herrod :

and it should list some folders

Customer :

9 files 11Dirs

Steve Herrod :

ok - and you should see folders like Downloads, Documents etc?

Customer :

no downloads but documents, fav,links,music,pics

Steve Herrod :

ok

Steve Herrod :

just want to check a couple of things

Steve Herrod :

if you type cd \documents

Steve Herrod :

and when the prompt has changed type

Steve Herrod :

dir

Steve Herrod :

you should see a list of your documents scroll up?

Customer :

I'm confused again back to J \thebackup>

Steve Herrod :

ok - so the prompt currently says j:\thebackup>

Steve Herrod :

is that right?

Customer :

yes

Steve Herrod :

ok

Steve Herrod :

so now type

Steve Herrod :

cd \documents

Steve Herrod :

press enter

Steve Herrod :

and the prompt should then change to j:\thebackup\documents

Customer :

can't find path

Steve Herrod :

hmmm, this is confusing

Steve Herrod :

if you type exit

Steve Herrod :

that should close the Command Prompt window

Customer :

window closed

Steve Herrod :

ok, if we go to start-->Computer

Steve Herrod :

and double click the J drive

Customer :

got backup 5/10..... File Folder

Steve Herrod :

ok, is that folder thebackup listed?

Customer :

yes

Steve Herrod :

ok, double click that folder

Steve Herrod :

and let me know what is displayed now

Customer :

files desktop

Customer :

documents

Customer :

fav

Customer :

etc

Steve Herrod :

ok, double click on Documents

Customer :

got list of my documents

Steve Herrod :

ok good

Steve Herrod :

think we are there now with the files

Steve Herrod :

now we just need to backup e-mails

Customer :

finally!!!

Steve Herrod :

can you load up Windows Mail?

Customer :

got it

Steve Herrod :

go to File-->Export

Steve Herrod :

and choose Messages

Customer :

ok

Steve Herrod :

this should prompt you for a format to export to

Customer :

format exchange win mail

Steve Herrod :

choose Windows Mail

Customer :

k

Steve Herrod :

then it will ask you to choose a location

Steve Herrod :

select the browse button

Customer :

k

Steve Herrod :

select J:

Customer :

not an option

Customer :

type it in?

Steve Herrod :

and use mailbackup or similar as the name

Steve Herrod :

yes, try j:\mailbackup

Steve Herrod :

and hit next when done

Steve Herrod :

that should then ask you what folders you want to backup

Customer :

select message folders

Customer :

all?

Steve Herrod :

yes

Steve Herrod :

then hit next

Customer :

I have to delete Deleted Items folder

Steve Herrod :

ok

Steve Herrod :

if you don't want the Deleted Items backed up you can hold the Ctrl key and click each folder you want to backup

Steve Herrod :

this is basically the procedure we are following

Steve Herrod :

http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/4905/backup-windows-mail-messages-and-contacts-in-vista/

Customer :

export directory must be empty. select empty folder try again

Steve Herrod :

ok - use this as the export directory

Steve Herrod :

c:\users\ed\desktop\mail backup

Customer :

finished...think it only exported the sent file

Steve Herrod :

ah ok

Steve Herrod :

was that the only folder highlighted?

Customer :

don't know thought i selected all

Steve Herrod :

ok - if All folders was selected then that should be what was exported

Customer :

about 1500 plus files

Steve Herrod :

can always redo the Export just to make sure

Steve Herrod :

ok - does that sound about right?

Customer :

I tried but got the select empty again

Steve Herrod :

c:\users\ed\desktop\mail backup2

Steve Herrod :

use that as the directory this time

Customer :

can i open c:\users\ed\desktop\mail backup ?

Steve Herrod :

yes, you should be able to double click on that and open up

Steve Herrod :

see what contents are listed

Customer :

exported "sent items" again

Steve Herrod :

ok

Steve Herrod :

and if you open up the mailbackup folder on the desktop, what are the contents

Customer :

looks like it's all there

Steve Herrod :

ok - that's good

Steve Herrod :

so now we need to backup your contacts

Steve Herrod :

so in Windows Mail

Steve Herrod :

go to File-->Export-->Windows Contacts

Steve Herrod :

select the format as CSV

Customer :

select format

Steve Herrod :

and once CSV is selected

Steve Herrod :

you need to select which details it will export

Steve Herrod :

i'd just tick everything

Customer :

save as?

Steve Herrod :

call it contacts

Steve Herrod :

and on j: if possible

Steve Herrod :

otherwise just save it to your desktop

Customer :

saved but i can't find it

Steve Herrod :

ok, if you go to Start and then type contacts in the search bar

Steve Herrod :

hopefully it will show up there?

Customer :

can only get Windows Contacts same as i get from inbox

Steve Herrod :

ok, when exporting the contacts would it let you specify were they were saveD?

Customer :

no

Steve Herrod :

just setting up Windows Mail here

Steve Herrod :

ok - this process should work and allow you to choose the location of where to save the file

Steve Herrod :
  • Select Tools | Windows Contacts... from the menu in Windows Mail.
  • Click Export in the toolbar.
  • Make sure CSV (Comma Separated Values) is highlighted.
  • Click Export.
  • Now click Browse....
  • Pick a folder to save the exported contacts.
  • Type the desired name (say "Windows Mail contacts") under File name:.
  • Click Save.
  • Now click Next >.
  • Make sure all address book fields you want included are checked.

Steve Herrod :

can you try that and when you Browse, choose the Desktop folder

Customer :

had to install CSV opener

Customer :

got it on desktop

Steve Herrod :

ok, so on the desktop you have your contacts and the mail backup folder as well?

Customer :

yes

Steve Herrod :

ok - let's get them to the flash drive and I think we're backed up

Steve Herrod :

firstly

Steve Herrod :

right-click the contacts file and choose Copy

Steve Herrod :

then go to Start-->Computer

Steve Herrod :

double click J drive

Steve Herrod :

sorry - right click on J drive and choose Paste

Customer :

can i use send to when i right click?

Steve Herrod :

yes, if J is an option there?

Customer :

k

Customer :

yes but won 't work 0 bytes

Steve Herrod :

ok, what about the mailbackup folder?

Steve Herrod :

can you right-click that and send to J?

Customer :

checking j drive i have mail backup, The Backup, win mail cantacts

Steve Herrod :

ok

Steve Herrod :

that sounds like we have everything we need

Steve Herrod :

so the next step would be to start the reinstall of Windows

Customer :

ok

Steve Herrod :

so guess we will lose contact during that point...

Customer :

ok

Steve Herrod :

if you print this out in the meantime

Steve Herrod :

http://www.petri.co.il/install_windows_vista.htm

Steve Herrod :

it goes through the Vista installation

Steve Herrod :

as you want to start from scratch to make sure the issue is totally verified - there is a section where you configure the hard drive. At this point, delete the existing partition and create a new one

Steve Herrod :

otherwise it might not be completely erasing the system

Steve Herrod :

also, make sure the flash drive is disconnected during the reisntallation

Steve Herrod :

that way nothing can happen to the backup in error

Customer :

OK gonna shut down and follow the How to

Steve Herrod :

no problem

Customer :

I'll be bac in the morning

Steve Herrod :

ok - will be here

Customer :

ty

Steve Herrod :

Let me know how it goes
