Part of my homework is to rename my wireless nic, but when I do this no information shows up.

The NIC itself is a hardware item and its name cannot be changed. I suspect that the assignment is actually to change the name of a network connection. This is a simple operation.
In XP, it's done like this: Open Network Connections. Right-click on the connection to be renamed. In the drop-down menu, select Rename. The procedure is similar in other versions of Windows.
In the example below, I've renamed "Local Area Connection 1" to "Giant Toad."
