Customer Question

I have an antique mantle clock but in the shape of a sedan chair. It is made from what is called Pinchback gold leaf. It stands about 10 inches tall and has a small dome on top. It is fairly intricate and very heavy. All I know is that it has been in my family for about 80 years.

Hi Miriam, My name is XXXXX XXXXX it is my pleasure to assist you.

The Sedan Chair Clock dates from the late 18th century to the early 19th century - a sort of crossover between a clock and a watch, many were in fact fitted with watch movements .... but not all. Some were fitted with a movement which appears to have been made specifically for the Sedan Clock and would be far too big for a watch.
Shapes vary from round, shield and rectangular. All are 30 hour, with Verge escapement and are chain driven. Although called a Sedan Chair Clock, there is no evidence to suggest that they were ever used in a Sedan Chair; a more compelling theory is that they were used by wealthy people in their carriages. The clocks would be kept in the Hall of a country house pending the arrival of the carriage from the stables. The clock would then be removed from the wall and placed in the carriage. A row of these clocks in the Hall would, of course, indicate that the wealthy owner had many carriages. The Sedan Chair Clock therefore became important because of its ability to show wealth!

Sedan Clocks are now very rare and usually follow the same subtle, Georgian style.

Thank you Mike that is fantastic. This is the first time I have seen another clock like the one I have, it is identical. My next question is where or how can I get it valued? I must add that it is not working, it has in the past but I guess it could need a bit of work done to it.

Hi Miriam, Sorry I missed the next question. With todays market and prices realized checking with several auction houses such as Heritage and South Bend in good body and running condition $1050.00 to excellent body and running condition $1975.00. You can also seek a local reputable appraiser of fine antiques with a good track record. I would see about getting it running to get maximum value if you want an appraisal for insurance purposes I would extend the values by $500.00 to $750.00 on both ends. Thanks Mike

Thanks again Mike for your excellent service & advice. I am really surprised that being such a rare piece it is only valued between $1000 & $2000.
