Hello, the negative terminal does not connect to the relay, it grounds through the mounting tabs. Click here to see what goes where. Let me know if I can help further

Customer: replied 5 months ago.
I have that what I need is a photo where the wires go off the reay and the ground wire is on the big post on neg side of relay and the thick wire go to the starter to the neg post on battery red wire goes on left small post and brown wire goes on right and on pos post goes wires for the horn raido and head lights and there is another fuse link don't know what that does and if you switch the small wires on the small tabs and turn key starter spins and shut key off tarter keeps spinning can you sent a photo where wires go on relay and where they end on frelay mr Wiggins
Customer: replied 5 months ago.
also ground wire is mounted to the frame and on neg big post on relay don't know if that is right
Customer: replied 5 months ago.
ground wire was mounted to engine but was cut don't know where cut end goes
Expert:  K. Wiggins replied 5 months ago.

The negative cable doesn't go on the relay at all. The small terminal marked S is for power from the key when it's in the start position. I'll make a drawing below that should help.

Customer: replied 5 months ago.
The ground wire thick wire goes from frame to negative battery post
Expert:  K. Wiggins replied 5 months ago.

That's correct

Customer: replied 5 months ago.
good morning mr wiggins are you there its john with the 1979 starter relay I have a ? for you
Expert:  K. Wiggins replied 5 months ago.

Good morning, I'm here. How's things going with it today?

Customer: replied 5 months ago.
I look at the truck and the negative thick wire goes to the starter and the ground is on the relay should I take the thick negative wire off the negative battery post and put it on the relay and take the ground wire that is grounded to the frame and put it on the negative battery post are they backwards
Expert:  K. Wiggins replied 5 months ago.

You should have only positive wires on the relay, it grounds through the bolts that hold it on the fender.

As for the negative from the battery you can connect it to the frame or the starter mounting bolt. You also want a ground from the engine to the body sheet metal. I usually use an intake bolt and then run it to the firewall.

If you do that and then wire up the relay like this you should be good to go.

Customer: replied 5 months ago.
you told me to put ground wire from the frame ground to the negative post on the battery and the black wire on the starter to the right side negative post on the relay are the backwards all power accessories are on the big post on relay closest to battery on negative big post on battery goes to the starter that should go to the relay and the ground wire that is hooked up to negative side of relay should go to negative post on battery is that correct Mr Wiggins
