Does it matter which fuel you are using?

Could be one of a few things.

Timing chains, piston slap, big end knock.

Accessory pulley alignment, Power steering pulley is the cause.

Have you driven near a wall to hear it better?

Gary

Customer: replied 9 months ago.
i had pre ignition problems before but i changed fuel to caltex 98 that was more of a rattling sound.no have not driven near a wall because the sound doesn't happen when idling.

Ok, so your noise is "pinging" under acceleration?

Very common, especially for VE.

I would recommend an upper cylinder clean using the Subaru product or Threebond product.

The carbon buildup within the combustion chamber increases the compression ratio, the PCM can't pull any more timing out, and hence the sounds you hear.
