1967 Datsun 1600 Roadster - Ran out of gas, now won't start.

Customer Question

1967 Datsun 1600 Roadster - Ran out of gas, now won't start. BTW, I also disconnected the tach cable from the coil, then reconnected while the car was off (don't know if that has anything to do with problem). Have an electric fueld pump and disconnected fuel lines after the filter and before the carbs - fuel is pumping in when pump is on. Also took tops off float bowls of carbs - both floats floating in gas. Checked spark and ignition. Still won't start. Any ideas?

Hi Steve,

Maybe the car didn't run out of gas?

Just co-incidence?

Have you checked for spark at the plug leads?

Have you checked the distributor rotor is turning while cranking the engine?

Did check for spark at one of the plug leads, but not the distributor rotor. How do you check the rotor? (Just pull off the cap and watch it turn while cranking?)
Car was running and I was adjusting fast idle slightly when it stopped. Gas guage was on empty.

Hi Steve,

It does have fuel at the carbs now, correct?

Does it have spark at any lead while cranking?

Yes, please check the rotor spins while cranking.

I had a customer the other day replace a distributor, because it had no spark.

Had no spark because the timing belt for that head was broken.

Fuel at the carbs and in the carb bowls.
Spark at lead #1 when tested.
Rotor spins while cranking.
I imagine that perhaps some gunk in fuel line clogged up the venturi needle in the carb - does that make sense?
Should I try to take off the suction chamber and clean everything?

Ok, sounds like ignitIon is ok.

What type of carb, is it an SU CV constant vacuum carb?

Single carb, or twin carbs?

Maybe a needle has fallen out.

Let's take the air filter off for a look as well.

Hi Steve,

Have you had any success with your car?
