check the wire from the ignition switch to the resistor. is it 12 volts???
the voltage should be 12 volts through the resistor to the positive side of the coil when cold. when the resistor warms up, the voltage will drop to around 7 volts.
if these readings are off, then the wire itself, ignition switch or resistor has decayed over the years and need to be upgraded.
