Hello,
First thing to do is put a oem temp thermostat back in. With no T stat, the water does not stay in the radiator long enough to cool down. When you did the compression test was the engine hot or cold? Do you see bubbles all the time, or just when it is hot or cold?
Brad
I removed the T stat to make sure it was not bad. The compression test was done while the engine was cold. With no T stat all the time. This is a new engine. I looked at head gaskets and I believe one of them is installed backwards nothing else makes any since.
I agree if it is backwards it will restrict flow... Thats good news and bad! Def need to get that checked first... post back with the results ....Brad
I am confused. Head gaskets were facing the right direction however some of the water jacket holes are covered by the gasket. It is a felpro gasket and i can't believe it was cut wrong. The intake doesn't have water jackets in the back but i know that can't be the problem. i didn't see any signs of gasket problems. Got any suggestions the people at Roush create engines didn't have any suggestions.
It's the wrong gasket. Look at the casting number on the head and look up the gasket for it. Post it and I'll search on my end too.Brad
These are the ford aluminum super cobra jet heads and the gasket is covering the water jacket in the block not the head (sorry i was not clear). it looks like the holes are about 1/4" off. I have new gaskets on order from mustangs unlimited again felpro and i will compare when they get here. if they cover the water jacket should i punch them out?
As long as there are no wires and the rest of them line up properly you can but that is really odd they dont line up... This sounds like a monster you are building!!! A man after my own heart!! :-) I miss my '69own coupe and my '91GT... you going to show it or Drag?
DId you get this as a crate engine? I did some checking and I don't think the 460 and Super Cobra Jet heads are compatible for that very reason. The water jacket ports are shaped differently. You say the gaskets line up with the heads but not the block?
I did it came from Roush http://www.roushperformance.com/engines/588-r.html I am building this car for someone else not mine.
These are the heads and the gasket set is listed in the parts http://www.mustangsunlimited.com/itemdy00.asp?T1=M6049SCJA+01
Ok did you order it as a kit to build yourself I guess? I can't believe they would have such a silly oversight unless when you ordered them the wrong ones got sent. I looked at the Brochure.... HOLY CRAP I WANT ONE!! We are at a stand still until the new gaskets get there and you compare to the block and heads... Post back when you find out or if you get any new info...
The engine was a crate just like the brochure, this guy has money i don't LOL. I will let you know what i find when the gaskets get here at the end of the week.
Ok my friend, I'll watch for the reply...

New gasket is much different than the old. However the water jacket hole on the front of the engine at the bottom will be covered with gasket. Should I cut it out to match the hole in the head or leave it covered?
Does the hole in the block match the head correctly? If you can carefully trim the gasket to fit where the head, gasket, and block align( same shape) and there is wire that will seal it on the perimeter of the newly trimmed area, it will be okay. If there is no wire, it will leak. I still can't believe the gasket is mismatched though. If Roush is selling it as a kit they surely have a gasket set the lines up OR there are specific instructions on trimming it where needed...
ok i can punch a 1/4" hole (it is a small hole in the block) and it will let the water flow, it will line up with the head. The other water jacket holes in the gasket don't have metal around them so it sounds like i should be safe.
OH MY LORD!!! I have loved this car since the movie cam out! I even went to the web site that built the cars for the movie to see what the cost. WAY out of my price range of course but I would love to have one... Here is the baby I built over 17 years.... and sold just a few months ago.
HEARTBRAKER GT
I wish I never sold it but I will build another one...someday!
you can search gtnby2 on google and see about everything I have done to it. I turned every bolt with the exception of the interior stitching but I did install it when it was finished. I want to see this thing when its running!!!! PLEASE keep me in the loop!
