Customer Question

I have a 1967Alfa Romeo Duetto which I have not started for 3-4 months. Today I replaced the mechanical fuel pump and the car started up. I let the car idle for 20-25 minutes. The car warmed up fine. Now I tried to put the car in reverse and the gear does not engage; all five forward gears engage with no problem. Four- fivemonths ago I did not have this problem.
What is the best coarse of action?
I can do some basic mechanical work
George

Optional Information:
Make: Other
Model: Alfa Romeo Duetto
Year: 1967

Already Tried:
Lubed levers under the car and topped-off the master cylinder so that the clutch has sufficient pressure. Used a mechanic's book to try and figure out if there was a lose nut or spring. No lose items were found.

DR. Hamman :

Hi, I am a professional certified mechanic, with an engineering background, and 35+ years experience. I will do my best to assist you. Also keep in mind I don't know if you are a pro or a novice so we may have to fine tune the answer. Feel free to add any additional info you feel is needed as we go on. Always keep in mind that I am here to help you with any questions.

All of the shift linkage is internal, so you cant get to it without a lot of work. You might check the fluid level, and top it off, and work the shifter around a bit, and see if it will free up and shift. Sometimes parts just stick, especially on older vehicles. Detent balls, or pins can drop out and cause this type of problem. I know you don’t even want to hear this next part, but here we go........If it will not go into reverse after topping it off, and working the shifter around, odds are the transmission will have to come out for repairs. If you have any more questions, as always, I am here to help. Good luck with it, have a great day, and Thanks for using Just Answer.

I hope this helps, 100% satisfaction is my goal. Myself personally, and Just Answer are here to serve you. If the answer is not clear, let me know what additional help you need, and I will assist you further. A bonus and positive feedback are always appreciated, good luck and Thanks.
