I have looked through all the web sites you provided me with. unfortunatly none of them provided me with the three letters on my block. The first three letters on my block are CCE if that can help you help me.

I did a little more digging. in hopes of helping u help me. I think that it is a chevy crate engine hints the CCE. I also pulled GM16 off from a plate, H208 allthough the 2 and 0 are questionable, and the casting number is XXXXX please let me know if this helps u help me

hi there my name is don
rick is currently having a computor problem
so i am going to assist him

in decifering the cce code

before 1968 gm used a ce code this meant that it was a factory crate warrenty engine replacement

after 1968 they adopted what you see there cce to distinguish chevy pontiac and so on

so from what i have found out from an engine rebuilder is that your engine

is a chevy factory crate warrenty replacement engine

hope this answers your question
thanks and have a great day please press accept for rick as i am just trying to help
don

Customer: replied 5 years ago.

hi don my name is XXXXX XXXXX have looked everywhere that i was directed to look but there doesn't appear to b a VIN # XXXXX the engine at all. I am fairly sure that it is usually located on the same plate as the engine # XXXXX its not it is also not on the bell housing. I am running out of places to look any suggestions? just out of curiosity if i hit the accept button will you stay with me til we figure this out. that way u know u r getting paid, and i can hopefully trust your word which judging by the feedback wont b a problem

ccasting number should look like this

Customer: replied 5 years ago.
hi rick this is jeramie. Don said that he needed the engines VIN # XXXXX that it would be located above the timing chain cover so this is what i came up with. it is mostly clear accept for the last letter. I0923FBF or I0923FBP please get back soon as i have to get up at 4AM for work and that is only 6 hours away
Customer: replied 5 years ago.

hi therre
the engine serial number is XXXXX on the left rear (drivers side) right where the transmission bolts up it will be a sequence of 7 numbers no letters starting most commonly with a 3

the head numbers are located under the valve cover between the valves again 7 numbers
but there will be also stamped pass or pass hi or gmt

i have the complete rebuild book for you engine and should be able to get information from those
don
Customer: replied 5 years ago.
the number that i found there was 8 digits long and it was 14015445 does that help any
Expert:  Don replied 5 years ago.
let me check
sorry thought you went to work i get up at 4 so i know what that feels like
where did you get that number on the engine ?
Expert:  Don replied 5 years ago.
hi there good news that number does cross over here is the information on that

14015445454 CIDN/A1978-87Normal2 or 4 Bolt Main

so now we know that it is a newer engine i will see if i can track the horse power for you
Customer: replied 5 years ago.
i found that number standing at the front bumper looking in it was on the rear right side of the engine where the tranny bolts to the engine
Expert:  Don replied 5 years ago.
yup that the one i am getting the information now as we speak

your engine is 1975 to 1987 light truck engine

Customer: replied 5 years ago.
are you going to be able to get back to me tonight with the horse power or torque or gearing ratios or engine litre
Expert:  Don replied 5 years ago.
ah i will try
the horse power unfortunatly on your engine is 270 hp

unfortunatly in late 1971 gm because of emmissions reduced the compression ratios for better emmissions there for derating the hp by 30 plus %

i hope i have answered you questions i will keep digging but i beleave that we have come a long way

Expert:  Don replied 5 years ago.
is that what you are looking for
did you need more info

if so we will have to spend more time but we can do that tomorrow
don
Expert:  Don replied 5 years ago.
did you get that
Customer: replied 5 years ago.
I've got to get to bed in about 15 minutes so if u could get me those specs tonight that would be great and if you can't get them until tomorrow that will be fine to. Either way I will hit the accept button before i go to bed so i dont feel as though i wasted your time. It's just that this is my first 8 cylinder and im trying to turn it into something special. it is a beauty to look at and the interior is mint so that only leaves beefing up the engine and making it run to optimal performances.
Expert:  Don replied 5 years ago.
hi there i did i beleive provide you with the information
in the previous post

our engine is 1975 to 1987 light truck engine

the horse power unfortunatly on your engine is 270 hp

unfortunatly in late 1971 gm because of emmissions reduced the compression ratios for better emmissions there for derating the hp by 30 plus %

you can indeed get more horpower out of it but that will take some explaining
to do that

have agreat night and talk at ya tomorrow

how r some good ways to get more HP. Is there anything i can add that is fairly inexpensive
Expert:  Don replied 5 years ago.
Hi jeramie

first i would like to ask you some questions

what do you have on the car now
like for an example

carb, intake, exhaust manifolds or headers what mufflers , single or dual exhaust

what sixe is the exhaust pipe what type of coil
Customer: replied 5 years ago.
my car consists of an eddlebrock 4 BBL carb. 1400 series, headers that r evenly spaced, i believe it is either 3 1/2 or 4 inch pipes with flomaster mufflers, accel 8.8 mm performance racing wires, and an H.E.I. distributor. Or atleast that is what I believe its called.
Expert:  Don replied 5 years ago.
Hi there
intake ?

if changing headers go to hooker super compitition headers with 3 1/2 inch collectors

and the flowmaster exhaust is good but make sure it has the cross over pipe just behind the engine also check the flowmaster mufflers you have as well

i would replace the edlebrock carb with a holley spread bore double pump great carb i have on the 396 took 2 secounds of the time

if you do not have a good intake get one that matches the holley smooth bore check with summit racing they will be able to steer you in the right direction

as for the engine its self

you can put in a rv cam
will give you a nice sound and you will not have to do any upgrades to the engine
if you go to a compition cam you will have to put in different valve springs and so on

if you can give me the number of the casting in the heads under the valve cover i will be able to see what you have

i would also put in semi synthetic oil 5w30 it is much better that standard grade

you can put k&n air filter thsi will increase the air flow to the intake

these are just small things you can do with out making drastic changes to the engine

you can use super grade fuel like 97 octane will burn cleaner and give you more punch

this kinda give you an idea of the cheap horse power

lucas fuel additive is good a well

Customer: replied 5 years ago.
