Hello and welcome to JustAnswer!

You have at least a couple different problems going on. Depending on what wiring has melted that could be related to the battery issue. The batteries may be failing do to overcharging. If the battery is dying as the vehicle sits though then a draw is likely.

Do you know exactly what the wire goes to that is melting?

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
I believe its the wire from the alternator to the battery

The car is an 85 with only 80,000 miles on it, but its my son's who is 18.

Is it actually a cable?

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
Its a wire. It burned up when my son needed a jump start from a miata, and hooked up the cables incorrectly and saw it smoking.

How was that repaired?
In what way are the batteries failing?

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
The battery has been replaced three times in four months. I thought there was a drain from somewhere that was causing the battery to fail. The wire was replaced by a very good local mechanic.

What is happening to the batteries?

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
They are drained

While driving or while sitting? How is it being determined that the batteries have failed rather than an issue with the vehicle?

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
Nevermind.

Ok.
