in your opinion, what would cause the fan to stop working

It looks like I gave you wiring diagrams related to starting system instead of cooling fan. Here is correct diagrams. This usually means the cooling fan assembly has failed. Disconnect the 4 wire connector for the fan assembly. Two wires go to the passenger side fan motor and the other two wires go to the driver's side fan motor. Using jumper wires apply 12 volts and ground to each fan motor. If one or both fans motors fail to operate, replace the fan motor assembly. Note: When performing this test if the polarity is incorrect, the fan(s) will run backwards. If this is the case, simply reverse the jumper wire leads. IF fan's don't run then replace.
