My 2004 pt cruiser gear shift won't engage gears. Slides up n down very loose. Had to have wrecker pull to side of road. Won't go into any gear now but did manage to get it back in park. HELP!!! HELP!!! I can't AFFORD another car right now

It sounds to me as though the gearshift cable broke or fell off.

here are the instructions for replacing the gear shift cable and also adjusting it but it can also be used just to look at it and while moving the shifter knob se if the cable and lever move at the transmission,

You may have to remove the air cleaner, the battery and tray in order to see it

It's about a 1.5 hour job if the shop does it. That is remove and replace that cable.
