There could be a couple of causes for this light and chime. However the most likely is going to be the belt retractor assembly itself. The is a switch on the retractor assembly. Once the belt is pulled out far enough the switch closes turning off the light. When it is drawn back in far enough the switch opens and turns on the light. Normally what is found is there isn't proper tension in the retractor which allows the assembly to move slightly and can lose connection at the switch. You can disable the seat belt minder system, but this will only turn off the light and chime for the seat belt.It won't repair the problem.
BELTALERT PROGRAMMINGBeltAlert can be enabled or disabled by your authorizeddealer or by following these steps:NOTE: The following steps must occur within the first60 seconds of the ignition switch being turned to the ONor START position. DaimlerChrysler does not recommenddeactivating BeltAlert.1. Turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position andbuckle the driver’s seat belt.2. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position and waitfor the Seat Belt Warning Light to turn off.3. Within 60 seconds of turning the ignition switch to theON position, unbuckle and then re-buckle the driver’sseat belt at least three times within 10 seconds, endingwith the seat belt buckled.NOTE: Watch for the Seat Belt Warning Light to turn onwhile unbuckling and off while re-buckling the seat belt.It may be necessary to retract the seat belt partially eachtime when unbuckling.4. Turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position. Asingle chime will sound to signify that you have successfullycompleted the programming.BeltAlert can be reactivated by repeating this procedure.NOTE: Although BeltAlert has been deactivated, theSeat Belt Warning Light will continue to illuminate whilethe driver’s seat belt remains unbuckled.
