Chrysler Sebring GTC: need too change a tone wheel on a cam

This answer was rated:

need too change a tone wheel on a cam gear on a 2.7 sebring motor can i do this? want to cut the rivets and change without taking the gear off or loosening the chain. can i do this?

Hello and welcome to JustAnswer!

You can try replacing the tone wheel that way but it wouldn't be recommended. The tone wheel is clocked very precisely with the sprocket so the holes in the tone wheel are in the correct spot in the cam's rotation, and it would be impossible to get it perfect if the tone wheel was swapped.

I've heard of people trying this and having issues, but if you want to give it a shot and try to save a few hours of engine teardown it's worth a shot. If you have performance concerns or start to set a P0340, P0344 or P0016 afterward then the whole sprocket will need to be replaced.

it runs now and good but cam sensor is disconnected does not read tone wheel because cam sensor is disconnected has diffrent slots for sensor

It sounds like you have the incorrect year engine then. The earlier engines used an SBEC powertrain control module and later engines used an NGC controller, these used different patterns on the cam and crank sensor tone wheels. Hopefully when this engine was installed whoever did it used the car's original flexplate, if a flexplate came with the engine it would also be incorrect like the cam sprocket.

i have the original flex plate it has a diffrent tone wheel with a diffrent pattern cut out of it.. want to put the original tone wheel

You have the original flexplate installed in the car? That's good. If it's not installed then it will need to be, along with the correct cam sensor tone wheel.
