2001 PT CRUISER: OVERHEATING..COOLANT..RADIATOR CAP..HEAD GASKET

This answer was rated:

JUST DID A COMPRESSION TEST ON 2001 PT CRUISER WITH 2.4 ENGINE. HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCING OVERHEATING PROBLEMS AND COOLANT IS BYPASSING NEW THERMOSTADT AND NEW RADIATOR CAP AND FORCING ANTIFREZE TO OVERFLOW FROM THE RESIVOIR TANK. ALSO NOTICED THAT COOLANT IN RESIVOIR TANK IS NOT BEING SUCKED BACK INTO RADIATOR WHEN COOLED.
THE READINGS I CAME UP WITH WERE: #1 (170) #2 (155) #3 (155) #4 (180)
ARE THESE READINGS ACCEPTIBLE, OR DO THEY INDICATE A POSSIBLE HEAD GASKET PROBLEM?
The compression readings are fine. It can still have a head gasket leak and have good compression. They make a dye to check for compression in the cooling system and this will be what you need to do next as it does sound like a head gasket leaking. The test is called a block test and you can buy this at any parts store.
