NOTE: The crossover and selector cables are manufactured as a cable "assembly" and cannot be serviced individually.

REMOVAL

  1. Pull up on gearshift knob with moderate force to remove from gearshift mechanism
  2. Remove shifter boot/bezel assembly from console by lifting up at mounting ring area
  3. Remove the center console assembly as shown in
  4. Remove crossover cable retaining clip and disconnect from shift lever
  5. Remove selector cable retaining clip and disconnect from shift lever
  6. Remove three grommet plate-to-floor pan attaching nuts
  7. Remove air cleaner assy
  8. Disconnect battery cables.
  9. Remove battery hold-down clamp and battery
  10. Remove battery tray
  11. Disconnect cables from the shift levers at the transaxle

    CAUTION: Pry up with equal force on both sides of shifter cable isolator bushings to avoid damaging cable isolator bushings.

  12. Remove cable retaining clips and remove cables from bracket
  13. Raise vehicle on hoist.
  14. Remove converter heat shield
  15. Remove remaining grommet plate-to-floor pan screw
  16. Remove cable assembly from vehicle.

INSTALLATION

CAUTION: Gearshift cable bushings must not be lubricated or the bushings will swell and split.

  1. Raise vehicle on hoist.
  2. Install cable assembly through floor pan opening and secure to floor pan with grommet plate and one screw
  3. Make sure the three grommet plate studs protrude through cable assembly and floor pan and tighten screw to 7 N·m (60 in. lbs.)
  4. Route transaxle end of cable assembly into engine compartment and over transaxle assembly.
  5. Install converter heat shield
  6. Lower vehicle.
  7. Install gearshift cables to mounting bracket and fasten with NEW clips Make sure clips are installed flush to bracket.
  8. Connect gearshift selector and crossover cable to shift levers at transaxle Install and tighten the three grommet plate-to-floor pan nuts to 6 N·m (50 in. lbs.) torque.
  9. Install selector cable to shifter lever and secure cable to shifter bracket. Install clip
  10. Install crossover cable to shifter lever and secure cable to shifter bracket. Install clip

    NOTE: Only the crossover cable is adjustable. The selector cable does not have any adjustment capabilities.

  11. Adjust crossover cable as follows:
    1. Loosen adjusting screw on crossover cable at shifter Pin transaxle crossover lever in 3-4-N position using a 1/4 inch drill bit. Align hole in crossover lever with the hole in the boss on the transaxle case Be sure drill bit goes into transaxle case at least one half inch.
    2. The shifter is spring - loaded and self - centering. Allow shifter to rest in its neutral position. Torque adjustment screw to 8 N·m (70 in. lbs.) Care must be taken to avoid moving the shift mechanism off-center during screw tightening.
    3. Remove drill bit from transaxle case and perform functional check by shifting transaxle into all gears
  12. Install center console assembly
  13. Verify that boot is not pinched at console opening before tightening.
  14. Position gearshift boot over the gearshift mechanism and engage tab on mount ring at front to opening in console. Apply hand pressure to engage bosses on mount ring of boot to console opening slots.
  15. Position gearshift knob hole over the gearshift mechanism and align the shift pattern.
  16. Strike knob with rubber mallet to engage knob to mechanism.
  17. Verify that shift pattern is aligned properly.
  18. Install battery tray
  19. Install battery and hold-down clamp
  20. Install the air cleaner assembly
  21. Connect battery cables

GEARSHIFT CROSSOVER CABLE ADJUSTMENT

  1. Remove center console from vehicle.
  2. Loosen adjusting screw on crossover cable at shifterPin transaxle crossover lever in 3-4 neutral position using a 1/4 inch drill bit. Align hole in crossover lever with the hole in the boss on the transaxle case Make sure drill bit goes into transaxle case at least one half inch.

how do you remove the console?

  • graphicRemove shift lever knob, if vehicle is equipped with a manual transmission pull upward to remove. Automatic transmission shift lever knob, loosen set screw in the knob and pull off lever.
  • Place the parking brake lever in its full "off" position.
  • Remove screws attaching console to floor bracket. Remove the rear window switch panel from the console.
  • Through the switch panel opening, grasp a parking brake cable or equalizer and pull back approximately one inch.
  • While holding the cable or equalizer, pull the parking brake handle to its full upright position.
  • Remove console from vehicle.
