My 2002 Silverado would not idle at the beginning of the

Customer Question

My 2002 Silverado would not idle at the beginning of the colder weather, this year, but after a seemingly normal start the rpm would drop to zero despite revving it up with gas pedal. I would need to give it some gas above idle to keep it from stalling out during the cold weather last year. I figured it due to condensation in the tank, so I replaced the fuel filter.. No change. New Spark plugs.. No change. Then I replaced the Idle Air Control Valve. Now it seems to get zero gas, and just clicks, doesn't start.I hear the fuel pump at power-up, but it sounds different than before.
JA: Is the fuel filter an external one, or is it inside the tank?
Customer: I think it's in the tank
JA: Are you fixing your Silverado yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: yes. plugs. and IACV
JA: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?
Customer: no.. Thanks!

Since fuel pump sounds different I suspect a problem with the fuel pump. A quick test is to see if it runs on starting fluid, if so you know problem is fuel related. Next step is a fuel pressure test, fuel pressure should be at least 55 psi key on engine off, if low replace the pump. Let me know how it goes or if you have more questions. Thanks.
