how many miles....the old gm cams did delaminate
i would check valve train operation....any motor noise
bad cams are common for back fire...if the valves on a certain cylinder has less or no travel it would point to a rounded cam lobe....but that serious teardown ..pulling valve covers is way easier....no spark now?
i can look not off the top of my head....454?
