Need to know what type and how much transmission fluid is

Customer Question

Hi need to know what type and how much transmission fluid is required for a 2006 equinox. Where is the transmission filter located?
JA: When was the last time your transmission fluid was checked? Changed?
Customer: Not sure Bought it 4 months ago with 104,000 miles. Couple a days ago it had no trans power, and when put in drive it would slam.
JA: Are you fixing your Equinox yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: Yes. I finally found the dip stick. The oil is black so I'm first trying to change the oil and se what will happen. But I hear of many different oils so I decided to get it from the source
JA: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?
Customer: where is the oil filter

GM states that the only fluid you should use in the tranmission is T – IV. The transmission hold 8.2 quarts when doing a flush. See the filter location in the link below.

How much will it take when only the oil is changed?

I would add 3 and recheck the level and top it off from there. If the fluid is black you should consider having the transmission flushed which will assure you remove 100% of the dirty fluid.
