Customer Question

I have a 1995 Chevy Silverado 2500 4WD 8600 GVW (K2500).I am replacing the hubs and rotors on the front wheels. Installation goes fine until I start to tighten the center nut. The wheel spins ok until the nut starts to get tight. At that time it starts to lock the wheel and it will not freely turn. Can you guide me to what I am doing wrong. Thanks.

Hi, My name is ***** ***** for the delay.
I will do my best to assist you.

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
The logical thing to happen here is insert the hub into the spline, tighten the 4 hub bolts and then tighten the center spline nut. However, the hub and brake rotor will not spin even with heavy pressure.
Customer: replied 2 months ago.
That is when the center nut is tightened.

will it spin with the brake caliper off?

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
The brake caliper is off the vehicle now. Only the hub and rotor.

does the axle turn free with the bearing off?

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
It even turns free until I tighten the center nut.
Expert:  Tim's Auto Repair replied 2 months ago.

you do have this front end right?

Expert:  Tim's Auto Repair replied 2 months ago.

torsion bar front?

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
Not sure what you mean. Even when I tried replacing the old hub it locks up too.
Customer: replied 2 months ago.
The diagram does duplicate the front end but the problem is with the 4WD drive axle.
Expert:  Tim's Auto Repair replied 2 months ago.

you are using the same axle?

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
It is where the axle connects to the hub.
Customer: replied 2 months ago.
Only the rotor, hub and seal are being replaced.
Expert:  Tim's Auto Repair replied 2 months ago.

ok

and you are saying that the axle will tighten up on the old bearing as well?

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
It seems to me that the rubber on the seal is getting pinched between the hub and the axle.
Expert:  Tim's Auto Repair replied 2 months ago.

that shouldnt stop it

Expert:  Tim's Auto Repair replied 2 months ago.

this makes little sense

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
My thoughts are that there is a trick to get the two pieces mated without pinching is that is what is happening.
Expert:  Tim's Auto Repair replied 2 months ago.

unless the new bearing is just bad

Expert:  Tim's Auto Repair replied 2 months ago.
