Customer Question

i have a 2008 Impala V-6 that won't start this morning. I drove it last night with no problems. It cranks fine but won't try to fire at all
JA: Have you checked the fuel supply? And are all the spark plugs working?
Customer: no, and i don't know. It doesn't sound like a miss, so it's possible that i don't have any spark at all
JA: Are you fixing your Impala yourself? What have you tried so far?
Customer: i'll fix it if i can find the problem, and assuming it's within my capabilities which would be minor replacement
JA: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?
Customer: no...thanks.

Are you looking for some possible causes or would you like me to walk you through this diagnoses?

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
lets start with possible causes please
Expert:  AMEDEE replied 2 months ago.

You bet!

Expert:  AMEDEE replied 2 months ago.

The most common or likley causes are a bad fuel pump, crankshaft position sensor, computer, security system (bad key or ignition switch) or a blown fuse.

Expert:  AMEDEE replied 2 months ago.

Some other not so common causes would be a bad camshaft position sensor, throttle body or bad gas

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
is there a way to locate any of these without a computer?
Expert:  AMEDEE replied 2 months ago.

Some simple tets would need to be performed to give you a direction to go in. Would you like some suggestions?

Expert:  AMEDEE replied 2 months ago.

YES there are some things you can do. I will go over them for you

Customer: replied 2 months ago.
please....thanks.

You can check to see if the engine has spark with some basic tools. For example, you can use a screw driver or a spark tester to see if the engine has spark while cranking. You can ensure that there are no anti theft or security lights on or flashing on the dash with the key on or when trying to start the engine.

Expert:  AMEDEE replied 2 months ago.

You can also see if the engine runs on starting fluid. If so, this indicates a fuel delivery problem.

Expert:  AMEDEE replied 2 months ago.

All of this can be done without a computer.

i'm not familiar with the anti theft / key issue...are you saying the key itself could prevent it from starting even tho it cranks the engine?
Expert:  AMEDEE replied 2 months ago.

It depends on your set up. Some do and some dont. If you send me your VIN, I can find out for you. But if there are no anti theft or security lights on or flashing on the dash, then it is not related to the secuity system.

i'll try checking for spark...i used to just hold one wire off of the plug to see if it sparks....i assume this will still work?
Expert:  AMEDEE replied 2 months ago.

Thats correct.
